Microsoft Certifications in 2026: Current Paths, Retirements, and AI-Era Credentials

Microsoft certification in 2026 is changing faster than at almost any point in the role-based credential era. Azure administration and architecture remain central, but AI, security, Microsoft 365, Power Platform, and scenario-based Applied Skills have become increasingly important. At the same time, Microsoft has retired or scheduled the retirement of several familiar exams during 2026, including AI-900, AI-102, DP-100, AZ-204, AZ-500, PL-200, PL-500, PL-600, and Microsoft 365 Fundamentals MS-900. Candidates therefore need to verify status before building a study plan around an exam code they recognize from older materials.

Microsoft certifications still use Fundamentals, Associate, Expert, and Specialty-style role alignment, but Microsoft now pairs those certifications with shorter Applied Skills credentials that validate specific scenarios through lab-based assessments. The right path depends less on collecting badges and more on matching a current credential to the job a candidate actually performs: administrator, architect, security analyst, identity specialist, data analyst, AI engineer, DevOps engineer, endpoint administrator, or business application professional.

Fundamentals still provide orientation, but the lineup has changed

Fundamentals exams remain useful for candidates who need vocabulary, product positioning, and broad technical context before moving into hands-on role-based certifications. SC-900 continues to cover Microsoft security, compliance, and identity concepts, while PL-900 remains the entry point for Power Platform concepts. Azure Fundamentals AZ-900 also remains a common starting point for cloud candidates, especially those who need to understand core Azure services, pricing, governance, and cloud concepts before deeper administration work.

However, not every familiar Fundamentals exam is still current. Microsoft 365 Fundamentals MS-900 retired on March 31, 2026, and Azure AI Fundamentals AI-900 retired on June 30, 2026. Dynamics 365 Fundamentals exams MB-910 and MB-920 retired at the end of 2025. Candidates using older roadmaps should therefore stop treating those retired credentials as mandatory stepping stones.

The main lesson is that Fundamentals are optional orientation tools, not universal prerequisites. An experienced administrator can move directly to AZ-104, while a business analyst may gain more value from PL-300. The starting point should reflect the candidate's actual background and target role.

Azure administration and architecture remain durable core paths

Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate remains one of the most stable and practical Azure credentials. The current AZ-104 path covers identity and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking, and monitoring. Microsoft updated the English exam blueprint in April 2026, but the core job remains recognizable: implement, manage, secure, and monitor an Azure environment.

For architects, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert still requires Azure Administrator Associate as a prerequisite plus AZ-305. The architecture exam focuses on identity, governance, monitoring, data storage, business continuity, and infrastructure design. Strong candidates need broad IT operations knowledge because architecture decisions connect networking, compute, storage, resilience, security, migration, and cost.

These credentials work well together because AZ-104 develops implementation depth while AZ-305 tests design judgment. A candidate who can create a virtual network but cannot explain why a particular topology, availability model, identity design, or storage architecture fits a business requirement is not yet operating at architect level.

DevOps remains active, while the developer path changed in 2026

Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert remains active through AZ-400. The exam was updated in July 2026 and covers collaboration, source control, build and release pipelines, security and compliance, and instrumentation. Microsoft explicitly expects experience with both GitHub and Azure DevOps, reflecting how modern teams distribute source control, CI/CD, security scanning, and deployment automation across those platforms.

AI certifications have moved toward generative AI and agents

The most visible 2026 change is the replacement of older Azure AI credentials. AI-900 retired on June 30, 2026, and the previous Azure AI Engineer Associate exam AI-102 retired the same day. Microsoft introduced a new AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate path built around AI-103. Security certifications remain strong but also experienced retirements

Microsoft's security portfolio remains one of the clearest role-based areas. SC-200 targets security operations analysts who triage incidents, hunt threats, engineer detections, and use Microsoft Sentinel, Defender XDR, Entra ID, Purview, and Defender for Cloud. Microsoft 365 is moving toward administration with AI services

Microsoft 365 certification is also in transition. The long-standing Administrator Expert exam MS-102 is scheduled to retire on November 30, 2026. At the same time, Microsoft has introduced the beta Microsoft 365 and AI Services Administrator Associate credential through AB-650.

Power Platform still rewards data and app skills, but some exams retired

Power Platform remains important for business application, automation, analytics, and low-code roles. Power Platform Fundamentals PL-900 is still a useful entry point, while Power BI Data Analyst Associate through PL-300 remains one of Microsoft's most recognizable analytics credentials. PL-300 focuses on preparing, modeling, visualizing, analyzing, and securing data in Power BI.

Several other Power Platform exams changed during 2026. PL-500 and PL-600 retired on June 30, and PL-200 retired on August 31. This means older progression charts that show a simple PL-900 → PL-200 → PL-600 sequence are no longer reliable. Candidates should search the live credential catalog for the current role that matches functional consulting, architecture, automation, app development, or analytics.
