Microsoft AI-901: Content Understanding for Documents, Images, Audio and Video

Choose extraction when the output must have a defined structure

AI-901 now expects a learner to do more than recognize that a model can look at a document or listen to speech. Microsoft’s current fundamentals objectives name information extraction from documents, images, audio, and video with Azure Content Understanding in Foundry Tools, including a lightweight application that uses the extracted result. The critical design question is what information the application must return, where that information comes from, and what evidence makes a result usable.

A support workflow may need an invoice number, supplier, date, line items and total from a PDF. A media review workflow may need spoken segments and timestamps from a recorded briefing. A field inspection workflow may need descriptions of visible conditions in photographs. These are not interchangeable outputs. A fluent paragraph about an invoice is not the same as validated invoice fields, and a video summary is not a record of every timestamped event.

Begin by specifying a small contract: accepted input types, required fields, evidence references, permissible missing values and the action taken when a field cannot be established. Define which fields are directly observed, which are inferred and which require human confirmation. That contract gives learners a practical way to judge whether an analyzer and its output format fit the task.

The current Microsoft AI-901 skills outline separates conceptual recognition from implementation. An extraction exercise should demonstrate both: selecting the appropriate analyzer and then examining the structure and limits of its returned evidence, not simply pasting arbitrary text into a chatbot.

Prepare the Foundry resource and select a supported analyzer

Content Understanding is available through Microsoft Foundry Tools. A typical exercise starts with an Azure subscription, an authorized Foundry resource in a supported region and an identity permitted to use that resource. Microsoft’s current quickstart also requires appropriate model deployments and configured defaults for the analyzers. Before copying sample code, identify the resource endpoint, supported region, authentication method and deployed-model prerequisites in the actual documentation for the chosen environment.

A prebuilt analyzer is a useful first choice for a common task because it supplies a defined starting behavior. The Content Understanding quickstart demonstrates prebuilt examples for documents, images, audio and video, including structured invoice extraction. A beginner should start with a narrow prebuilt example before attempting a more specialized schema or orchestration.

An analyzer is not simply the same as a foundation model. It defines how incoming content is interpreted and what information is returned; model deployment, authentication and processing options form separate parts of the operating contract. That distinction matters when an application receives a valid API response but the response lacks the required fields: the failure may be task or analyzer selection rather than bad prompt wording.

Keep a record of the chosen analyzer, API version, accepted file type, input location, access method and desired output shape. Those details make a failed test reproducible. Avoid turning a one-off successful sample into an unsupported claim that all content types, locales, lengths or formats work identically.

Read documents and forms without inventing missing fields

Documents can contain printed text, handwriting, tables, checkboxes, figures, stamps, signatures and layout relationships. Extracting a supplier name from a header is easier than deciding which line items belong to which table or whether a subtotal refers to the entire document. For a structured invoice, preserve the original file and compare each output field with its actual source region, rather than treating the returned object as authoritative by itself.

A clear beginner exercise uses a fictional invoice containing a supplier, two line items, tax and a grand total. The learner first defines required fields, then runs a documented supported analyzer, inspects its structured response and checks the arithmetic. If a total is missing or inconsistent, the application should flag the record for review. This is a proposed exercise, not a claim that any live invoice or Azure resource was processed while preparing this article.

Document layout can explain apparent extraction errors. A page may have two columns, nested tables or a rotated attachment. Text can be recognized while the relationship between neighboring cells is wrong. Preserve useful layout and page references in the output when they are available, and distinguish an extraction failure from a downstream validation failure. This is why a polished natural-language summary cannot replace a structured business-record test.

The separate Microsoft AI-103 multimodal extraction discussion explores more advanced pipeline concerns. For AI-901, the smaller accomplishment is learning to choose an analyzer, inspect returned fields, locate supporting evidence and handle absent values honestly.

Treat images as visual evidence, not just text recognition

Image understanding can involve visible objects, regions, documents photographed by a phone or contextual descriptions of a scene. A receipt photo might be readable but skewed; a damaged-equipment photograph might need a description rather than a list of words. Ask whether the task is optical character recognition, general visual interpretation, structured field extraction or comparison with an authorized reference.

The computer-vision troubleshooting perspective helps separate capture problems from model problems. Resolution, glare, cropping, orientation and occlusion affect the evidence available to any analyzer. If a serial number is hidden, an accurate system should report that it could not be read rather than generate a plausible-looking value.

For AI-901 practice, prepare a small and legally usable test collection that includes a clean image, a low-contrast image and an image with incomplete information. Record the expected fields and whether the required evidence is visible. A high-quality result contains a justified answer or a documented abstention; it does not always contain the largest number of extracted labels.

An image-generation model solves a different problem from an image-extraction analyzer. The planned AI-901 vision and image-generation example addresses interpreting and producing visual outputs; this page concentrates on making existing visual evidence useful as structured information.

Extract speech and video information with temporal context

Audio analysis can involve transcription, speakers, timing and other structured signals; video can add frames, scene changes and a relationship between what was said and what was visible. A candidate should identify which of those signals the downstream task actually needs. A searchable meeting record may rely heavily on spoken content, while a safety review may need both a visible event and its approximate time.

Imagine a training recording in which the speaker mentions a part number while a diagram appears on screen. A text-only summary may miss the relationship; an extraction workflow should preserve enough timestamps and evidence references to reconnect the words and visual segment. A transcript without timing may still be useful, but it cannot substantiate a claim about the exact moment an event occurred.

Audio and video can also create significant privacy concerns. Obtain appropriate permission to process recordings, apply access controls, limit retention, and avoid sending identifiable material to a test environment unnecessarily. For editorial exercises, synthetic recordings or approved samples are safer than employee calls or confidential customer videos.

Use the official multimodal API examples as the starting point for supported media inputs and response fields. Do not assume every source type shares identical field names, supported sizes, latency or region coverage: confirm the actual product contract before writing validation logic.

Build a lightweight client around analysis and validation

An AI-901-level client does not have to be an enterprise integration. It should identify the chosen resource securely, submit a supported sample input, handle the service’s response or long-running operation as the documented API requires, and present a small validated result. Keep credentials outside source code. For a shared example, environment configuration and a least-privileged identity are better teaching devices than copying a secret key into a notebook.

A practical application contract might produce an object containing document type, a limited list of required fields, source evidence and a review status. The review status is an application judgment, not a magical property of the model. For example, a missing invoice number or contradictory totals could trigger REVIEW_REQUIRED while a document with consistent fields advances to human confirmation.

API calls may fail for reasons unrelated to model quality: incorrect endpoint, insufficient authorization, unsupported input, deployment mismatch, service throttling or timeouts. Separate setup errors, transport failures and extraction-quality failures. Report the actual failing stage to the learner; retrying a malformed input without correction is not a meaningful recovery strategy.

Microsoft’s Studio and Foundry walkthrough provides an accessible way to inspect analyzers and their results before coding a client. The portal is useful for learning response structure, but a production integration still needs its own logging, validation, permissions and data-governance decisions.

Distinguish the generally available API from preview enhancements

Content Understanding changes over time, so a technically correct example must identify the API version it targets. Microsoft’s current documentation recommends API version 2025-11-01 for generally available production use. The 2026-06-01-preview version offers additional capabilities, including agentic document understanding, but is a public preview and is not the default choice for production reliability.

This distinction affects code, response contracts and claims about feature support. Do not present a preview-only analyzer or agentic document mode as an ordinary property of the GA API. A tutorial should call out when it is relying on an experimental path and should avoid assuming that older preview configuration examples are compatible with the current versions.

The official Content Understanding version comparison is the controlling reference for these differences. Teams maintaining old examples should recheck API versions, schema behavior, model-deployment requirements and supported media before copying them into a new project.

AI-901 asks candidates to understand and implement foundational information extraction; it does not require students to market preview behavior as mature. A stronger exam-ready explanation can describe a conservative GA extraction path and identify advanced preview paths as optional, version-dependent exploration.

Evaluate outcomes and preserve an honest evidence trail

Evaluation should begin with a small set of expected answers chosen before the analyzer runs. For each document, image or media file, compare extracted values with source evidence, record omissions and distinguish errors in identification, relationships and downstream application rules. Include at least one difficult input so the evaluation reveals something more than successful handling of a perfect demonstration.

Do not collapse accuracy into a single unsupported percentage. For invoices, field-level exactness and arithmetic consistency can be meaningful; for audio, transcription or timestamp errors may matter more; for video, missing an important event can be worse than a slightly inaccurate description. Select the metric based on the actual downstream decision.

Capture enough operational context to reproduce a result without retaining more sensitive input than necessary: version, analyzer, environment, synthetic sample identifier, expected fields, observed failure category and corrective action. If the service was not used, do not report a pass/fail rate. A design checklist and a genuinely executed test are separate evidence levels.

A reader has mastered the current AI-901 information-extraction concept when they can identify the correct content type, explain why an analyzer fits it, describe a supported client interaction, interpret structured results and decide when human review is necessary. That outcome complements text and speech solution design without duplicating the speech transcription task itself.
