CompTIA Data+ DA0-002: Data Preparation, Analysis, Visualization, and Governance
CompTIA Data+ DA0-002 is the current V2 analytics exam for professionals who work with data but are not necessarily dedicated data scientists or database administrators. It launched on October 14, 2025 and replaced DA0-001, whose English exam retired in April 2026. The current blueprint emphasizes the complete analyst workflow: understand the environment, acquire and prepare data, analyze it, communicate the result, and govern the data so the conclusion can be trusted.
DA0-002 allows a maximum of 90 multiple-choice and performance-based questions in 90 minutes with a passing score of 675 on a 100–900 scale. Its five domains are Data Concepts and Environments at 20%, Data Acquisition and Preparation at 22%, Data Analysis at 24%, Visualization and Reporting at 20%, and Data Governance at 14%. The distribution is deliberately balanced; no single domain can compensate for weak end-to-end data practice.
Data work begins with the business question and the grain of the data
Before choosing a chart or statistical technique, an analyst needs to understand what each row represents and what question the organization is trying to answer. A table of orders has a different grain from a table of customers, and joining them carelessly can duplicate values and produce convincing but incorrect metrics. Grain, keys, cardinality, and relationships therefore matter before analysis begins.
DA0-002 also expects candidates to distinguish structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data and to understand common storage patterns such as relational databases, document stores, data warehouses, data lakes, object storage, and cloud services. The goal is not to become an administrator for every platform; it is to recognize how storage and schema choices affect access, quality, performance, and analytical use.
Modern environments increasingly mix on-premises and cloud data. Analysts should understand that location, latency, permissions, formats, cost, and data movement can shape a workflow. A technically correct query may still be a poor approach if it transfers huge datasets unnecessarily or ignores the authoritative system of record.
Acquisition and preparation often consume more effort than the statistical analysis itself
The 22% acquisition and preparation domain reflects reality: useful data is rarely delivered in a clean, analysis-ready table. Analysts combine files, databases, APIs, exports, and external sources, then profile the data to identify missing values, duplicates, inconsistent formats, outliers, invalid categories, unexpected distributions, and mismatched units.
Cleaning choices should preserve meaning. Removing every outlier can erase a real business event. Replacing missing values with a mean can distort a skewed distribution. Deduplication can remove valid repeated transactions if the candidate has not defined what makes a record unique. The exam therefore rewards reasoning about the purpose of the dataset rather than applying generic cleaning rules.
Transformation may include type conversion, normalization, aggregation, calculated fields, parsing, reshaping, and joining. SQL remains a practical part of that work, and candidates benefit from a strong grasp of SQL fundamentals, filtering, grouping, joins, and validation of row counts before and after a transformation.
Data Analysis is the heaviest domain because selecting the wrong method can invalidate the conclusion
DA0-002 covers descriptive, inferential, predictive, and prescriptive analysis at a practical level. Candidates should know which approach answers a question and how to interpret common measures such as mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, percentiles, correlation, and regression output.
Correlation does not establish causation, and statistical significance does not automatically mean business significance. A large dataset can make a tiny effect appear statistically significant, while a small dataset may hide a meaningful pattern. Analysts need to consider sample quality, bias, confounding variables, and the assumptions behind the method.
Predictive analytics is more visible in V2 than in earlier Data+ material, but the exam is still an analyst certification rather than a machine-learning engineering credential. Candidates who want to progress into advanced modeling, machine-learning lifecycle design, and production AI can use DataAI DY0-001 as the next-level comparison. Candidates should understand what a predictive model does, how training and evaluation differ, and why leakage, poor features, or unrepresentative data can produce misleading performance.
Troubleshooting analysis means questioning the pipeline before defending the result
When a dashboard or model produces an unexpected outcome, the first instinct should not be to explain the business with whatever number appeared. Analysts should trace the data lineage and verify source freshness, joins, filters, transformations, calculations, and assumptions. Many “insights” are pipeline errors.
Data quality problems may be systematic. A field can be complete but wrong because a source system uses a default value. A timestamp can be valid but interpreted in the wrong time zone. A category can be internally consistent while its business definition changed halfway through the reporting period. These errors are harder to detect than blank cells because they look legitimate.
Accountability for data quality is shared. Analysts should document issues and work with data owners, engineers, and business stakeholders instead of silently repairing every problem in a local workbook and creating another unofficial version of truth.
Visualization is a reasoning task about audience, comparison, and scale
Visualization and Reporting represents 20% of DA0-002 because communicating a result is part of analytics. A chart should make the relevant relationship easier to see. Bar charts support categorical comparison, lines help show change over time, scatter plots expose relationships between numeric variables, and distributions can reveal spread and outliers.
Visual design can mislead even when the underlying numbers are correct. Truncated axes, inconsistent scales, excessive categories, decorative three-dimensional effects, poor color choices, and dual axes can exaggerate or obscure differences. Candidates should be able to identify when a visual creates an inaccurate impression.
Dashboards also need hierarchy. The most important KPI should be easy to find, supporting measures should explain it, and filters should answer real user questions. Different audiences need different detail. An executive may need a trend and exception summary, while an operations team needs granular diagnostic information and the ability to drill into the cause.
Reporting should connect the analysis to a decision and state uncertainty clearly
An analyst’s job is not finished when the calculation is correct. Reports should explain the question, method, result, limitation, and recommended action in language appropriate to the audience. Technical details belong where they support trust or reproducibility, not where they overwhelm the decision-maker.
Uncertainty should be explicit. Forecasts have ranges, samples have limitations, and assumptions can fail. If data is incomplete, delayed, biased, or sourced from a proxy, that constraint belongs in the report. Hiding uncertainty makes the presentation appear stronger while making the decision weaker.
Good reports are also reproducible. Definitions, filters, time periods, calculation logic, source references, and version information should be documented so another analyst can understand how the result was produced. This becomes especially important when metrics are used for compensation, compliance, or executive commitments.
Governance keeps data usable by defining ownership, protection, retention, and lineage
The 14% governance domain is smaller by weight but touches every other domain. Governance establishes who owns data, who can access it, how long it is retained, what quality standards apply, where sensitive information can move, and how changes are documented.
Privacy and security requirements influence acquisition and reporting. Personally identifiable information may need masking, minimization, encryption, or restricted access. The distinction between cybersecurity and data privacy is useful because data can be technically secure while still being collected or used in a way that violates privacy obligations.
Lineage and metadata support trust. Analysts should know where a field originated, what transformations changed it, and whether the business definition is stable. Governance is not bureaucracy added after analysis; it is the structure that lets multiple teams reuse data without repeatedly arguing about what it means.
Data+ and DataSys+ address different parts of the data lifecycle
Candidates sometimes compare DA0-002 with DataSys+ DS0-001. Data+ is centered on analysis: preparing data, interpreting it, visualizing it, and governing its use. DataSys+ focuses more on the systems that store and serve data: database deployment, maintenance, security, performance, and continuity.
The distinction is useful for career planning. An analyst who spends most of the day in SQL, spreadsheets, BI tools, statistics, and stakeholder reporting is closer to Data+. A database administrator or data-platform operator responsible for availability, backups, access, performance, and recovery is closer to DataSys+.
The Exam-Labs comparison of Data+ and DataSys+ can help frame that decision. Neither credential is automatically “higher”; they validate different responsibilities.
Prepare for DA0-002 by completing a small analytics project end to end
Choose a dataset with enough messiness to require real preparation. Define a business question, profile the data, clean and join sources, document the transformations, analyze the result, build a visualization, and write a concise recommendation. Then have someone else review the work and try to reproduce the metric.
During review, challenge every assumption. Why was an outlier removed? Why was a median used instead of a mean? Does a join duplicate records? Could a confounding factor explain the correlation? Is the visual scaled fairly? Does the report separate fact from interpretation?
Use the CompTIA objectives as the checklist, but practice the workflow as one connected process. DA0-002 is strongest when candidates can move from raw data to a defensible decision without losing quality, context, or governance along the way.
