To make shell scripts more flexible and powerful, you can use variables. A variable is a named placeholder for a piece of data. You can define a variable in a script by writing VARIABLE_NAME="value". Note that there are no spaces around the equals sign. To use the value of the variable, you precede its name with a dollar sign ($). By using these conditional statements, you can write scripts that can adapt their behavior based on different situations, making your automation much more intelligent.

Control Structures: Loops

Loops are another fundamental control structure that allows you to repeat a block of code multiple times. The 101-01 exam covered the two main types of loops in Bash scripting: for loops and while loops. The for loop is used to iterate over a list of items. If you want to remove a package along with its configuration files, you use apt purge packagename. The apt search command allows you to search for packages in the repositories. These APT commands are the standard way to manage software on Debian-based systems.

Red Hat Package Management

On Red Hat-based systems, rpm is the low-level tool, analogous to dpkg. The rpm command can install, query, and remove .rpm package files. To install a downloaded package, you use rpm -i packagename.rpm. To upgrade a package, you use rpm -U. To remove a package, you use rpm -e packagename. The rpm -q packagename command is used to query if a package is installed, and rpm -qa lists all installed packages. Like dpkg, rpm does not handle dependencies automatically.

The high-level tools that solve the dependency problem in the Red Hat world are yum (Yellowdog Updater, Modified) and its modern successor, dnf (Dandified YUM). yum and dnf work with online repositories to automate the process of finding, installing, and updating packages. The commands are very similar to those used by apt. To install a package, you use yum install packagename or dnf install packagename.

To update a single package, you use yum update packagename. To update all packages on the system, you simply run yum update. To remove a package, you use yum remove packagename. The yum search command lets you find packages. Both yum and dnf will calculate all the necessary dependencies and prompt you for confirmation before making any changes to the system. Understanding both the APT and YUM/DNF command sets was essential for the 101-01 exam.

Disk Partitioning

Before you can store data on a hard drive, it must be partitioned. A partition is a logical division of a physical disk. The 101-01 exam required knowledge of how to manage disk partitions. Partitioning allows you to divide a single drive into multiple sections, each of which can be treated as a separate disk. This is useful for organizing data, installing multiple operating systems, or optimizing performance. There are two main partitioning schemes: MBR (Master Boot Record) and GPT (GUID Partition Table).

Inside the fdisk prompt, you can use commands like p to print the current partition table, n to create a new partition, and d to delete one. When you are done, you use w to write the changes to the disk. For GPT disks, you use a similar tool called gdisk.

Creating and Mounting Filesystems

Once a partition has been created, it needs to be formatted with a filesystem before it can be used to store files. A filesystem is the data structure that the operating system uses to keep track of the files on a disk. The 101-01 exam covered this crucial step in storage management. The most common filesystem for Linux is ext4, but others like XFS and Btrfs are also used.

To create a filesystem on a partition, you use the mkfs (make filesystem) command. There are specific commands for each filesystem type, such as mkfs.ext4 or mkfs.xfs. For example, to format the first partition on the sda disk with the ext4 filesystem, you would run mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1. After this, any files you write to /mnt/data will be physically stored on that partition.

Managing Mounted Filesystems

To see a list of all currently mounted filesystems, you can run the mount command with no arguments or use the df command. The df command, which stands for "disk free," shows the disk space usage for each mounted filesystem. The -h option (df -h) makes the output human-readable, showing sizes in kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes. This is a vital command for monitoring disk space. Another useful command is du (disk usage), which shows the space used by a specific directory and its contents.

When you are finished with a mounted filesystem, you can detach it using the umount command (note the spelling, with no 'n'). You can specify either the device or the mount point. For example, umount /dev/sda1 or umount /mnt/data will unmount the filesystem. You cannot unmount a filesystem if it is currently in use, for example, if a user's current working directory is on that filesystem.

Mounts made with the mount command are not permanent; they will be gone after a reboot. To make a mount permanent, you need to add an entry for it in the /etc/fstab file. This file contains a list of all the filesystems that should be mounted automatically at boot time. Each line in /etc/fstab specifies the device, the mount point, the filesystem type, and any mount options. Properly editing this file was a key skill for the 101-01 exam.

User and Group Management

Linux is inherently a multi-user system, and managing users and groups is a fundamental responsibility of a system administrator. The 101-01 exam placed a strong emphasis on these skills. Each user on the system has an account, which is defined by an entry in the /etc/passwd file. Every user is a member of at least one primary group, and they can also be members of multiple secondary groups. Group information is stored in the /etc/group file. By assigning permissions to a group rather than to individual users, you can simplify administration. If a new user needs the same access as others, you can simply add them to the appropriate group.

The groupadd command is used to create a new group. For example, groupadd editors creates a new group named "editors." To add an existing user to this new group as a secondary group, you would use the usermod command with the -aG options. The -a stands for append, and -G specifies the secondary groups. For example, usermod -aG editors jsmith will add the user "jsmith" to the "editors" group without removing them from any other groups they are already in.

To modify a group, you can use the groupmod command, for example, to change its name. To delete a group, you use the groupdel command. The groups command can be used to see which groups a specific user belongs to. Properly using groups is a cornerstone of an effective and scalable permissions strategy on a Linux system, a key concept for the 101-01 exam.

Basic Networking Concepts

While deep networking knowledge was reserved for later certifications, the 101-01 exam required an understanding of fundamental networking concepts and configuration. Every computer on a TCP/IP network needs a unique IP address to communicate. This address can be assigned statically (manually configured) or dynamically, typically from a DHCP server. To view the configuration of your network interfaces, you can use the ifconfig command (on older systems) or the ip command (on modern systems). ip addr show will display the IP addresses and other details for all network interfaces on the system. To bring an interface up or down, you can use ip link set dev eth0 up or ip link set dev eth0 down. The 101-01 exam expected familiarity with these basic network management commands.

Several command-line tools are essential for troubleshooting network connectivity. The ping command is the most basic. It sends a small packet to a destination host and waits for a reply. It is used to test if a remote host is reachable and to measure the round-trip time. For example, ping 8.8.8.8 will test your connectivity to one of Google's public DNS servers.
