AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 9
Question 80
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A multi-account organization pays for duplicated NAT gateways in every tiny development VPC. What is the MOST direct risk?
An ordinary ENI is not automatically equivalent to an EFA for HPC communication
A change in DNS TTL alone does not fix every suboptimal internet transit path
Sending every read across Regions can waste bandwidth despite local available replicas
Centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The missing control matters because centralized NAT can reduce resource count but add transit cost and blast radius. The appropriate corrective action is to evaluate centralized egress against resilience, traffic, routing, and data-processing costs. To check the outcome, verify that a measured cost-and-failover model supports the selected egress design.
Incorrect Answers
A:
An ordinary ENI is not automatically equivalent to an EFA for HPC communication can be a real consequence when an HPC application needs low-latency communication among tightly coupled EC2 nodes. Here the relevant failure is that centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A change in DNS TTL alone does not fix every suboptimal internet transit path can be a real consequence when a global HTTP API has regional users with highly variable internet route quality and cannot tolerate long path detours. Here the relevant failure is that centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Sending every read across Regions can waste bandwidth despite local available replicas can be a real consequence when a team wants to minimize inter-Region data charges for a global workload with frequent large cross-region responses. Here the relevant failure is that centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 81
An engineer selects the change "Review attachment route-table association, propagations and more-specific routes" because A Transit Gateway attachment is healthy but the production spoke suddenly uses the test network as a next hop. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Transit Gateway route table selection governs which next hop receives each destination prefix
Cryptographic security association lifetimes and compatible algorithms affect tunnel stability
Longest-prefix matching can override preferred BGP paths for different network ranges
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Transit Gateway route table selection governs which next hop receives each destination prefix. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, review attachment route-table association, propagations and more-specific routes, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, an unintended more-specific route can divert only one application subnet. A suitable verification is that a route inspection shows production prefixes on the approved gateway attachment.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Private routed connectivity requires symmetric return routing and compatible network controls explains a different case, for example when a VPC peering change broke one direction of a database connection but the forward route is present. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that transit Gateway route table selection governs which next hop receives each destination prefix; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Cryptographic security association lifetimes and compatible algorithms affect tunnel stability explains a different case, for example when a site VPN fails at regular intervals due to expired or incompatible Internet Key Exchange settings. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that transit Gateway route table selection governs which next hop receives each destination prefix; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Longest-prefix matching can override preferred BGP paths for different network ranges explains a different case, for example when a VPN route from a customer site suddenly loses preference to a newly advertised overlapping longer prefix. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that transit Gateway route table selection governs which next hop receives each destination prefix; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 82
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—A batch service runs healthy processes but fails ALB health checks because the probe path requires a user login—which action should the engineer take?
Offer the service through PrivateLink endpoint service backed by an NLB where supported
Configure a dedicated appropriate target-group health-check endpoint and matcher
Choose a Network Load Balancer with the required listener and target configuration
Use an Application Load Balancer with appropriate listener rules and AWS WAF association
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Configure a dedicated appropriate target-group health-check endpoint and matcher. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because load balancer target health must test readiness rather than authentication-protected business pages. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that incorrect health checks can cause all service targets to be declared unhealthy. Confirm the improvement by showing that targets transition healthy on the intended probe and real user requests succeed.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Offer the service through PrivateLink endpoint service backed by an NLB where supported would address a different scenario, such as when a consumer needs to reach an application by private VPC endpoint across accounts without full IP connectivity. The present issue requires configure a dedicated appropriate target-group health-check endpoint and matcher because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Choose a Network Load Balancer with the required listener and target configuration would address a different scenario, such as when a proprietary game service needs stable IP-address targets and high-throughput TCP handling. The present issue requires configure a dedicated appropriate target-group health-check endpoint and matcher because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Use an Application Load Balancer with appropriate listener rules and AWS WAF association would address a different scenario, such as when a web application needs path routing, HTTP host rules, and WAF inspection for incoming requests. The present issue requires configure a dedicated appropriate target-group health-check endpoint and matcher because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 83
A team chooses to Configure appropriate public BGP advertisements and verify allowed public service routing after observing: A company needs public AWS service API access across a Direct Connect public VIF but has not advertised eligible public prefixes. Which result would BEST verify the change?
The new gateway public endpoint establishes both tunnels and the old one is retired
Route tables select the preferred link and revert on primary failure
Approved public endpoint traffic follows the expected Direct Connect public routing path
BGP neighbor state and accepted prefixes match the intended VPC networks
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Approved public endpoint traffic follows the expected Direct Connect public routing path. This directly tests whether the selected change, configure appropriate public BGP advertisements and verify allowed public service routing, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that public VIF reachability has its own route advertisement requirements separate from VPC private routing. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that an established public BGP session with missing public routes can still leave endpoints unreachable.
Incorrect Answers
A:
The new gateway public endpoint establishes both tunnels and the old one is retired might confirm another remediation, for instance when a migration moves a customer gateway to a new public IP address but the Site-to-Site VPN attachment still references the old address. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved public endpoint traffic follows the expected Direct Connect public routing path. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Route tables select the preferred link and revert on primary failure might confirm another remediation, for instance when a connection uses two Direct Connect links and business policy requires a preferred active path rather than equal splitting. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved public endpoint traffic follows the expected Direct Connect public routing path. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
BGP neighbor state and accepted prefixes match the intended VPC networks might confirm another remediation, for instance when an approved Direct Connect connection is provisioned but private prefixes do not appear in the data center BGP table. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved public endpoint traffic follows the expected Direct Connect public routing path. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 84
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: An organization needs a private TLS certificate for service-to-service connections and considers embedding the CA private key in a container image. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Issue and bind certificates whose subject alternative names cover the actual service names
Update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite
Keep end-to-end TLS on the actual application listener and verify certificates
Issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because cA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that a leaked signing key could allow attackers to mint trusted internal identities. Confirm the improvement by showing that workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Issue and bind certificates whose subject alternative names cover the actual service names would address a different scenario, such as when a public API rotates keys but clients fail after a new wildcard certificate omits a particular hostname. The present issue requires issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite would address a different scenario, such as when a Site-to-Site VPN has an old cipher suite that is no longer permitted under corporate cryptographic policy. The present issue requires issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Keep end-to-end TLS on the actual application listener and verify certificates would address a different scenario, such as when a Global Accelerator TCP application uses TLS at the backend but developers think anycast addresses perform encryption. The present issue requires issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 85
An engineer selects the change "Use VPC Traffic Mirroring with a supported capture target and scoped filters" because A security analyst must inspect packet payload characteristics from supported EC2 network interfaces in a lab. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Traffic Mirroring copies selected packet traffic instead of only summarized flow metadata
Transit Gateway-level flow telemetry can identify attachment context absent from local application logs
Network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking
CloudTrail records control-plane API activity rather than every forwarded network packet
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Traffic Mirroring copies selected packet traffic instead of only summarized flow metadata. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use VPC Traffic Mirroring with a supported capture target and scoped filters, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, flow Logs alone cannot show the packet bytes required for this authorized analysis. A suitable verification is that a controlled packet reaches the collector with the expected headers and payload.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Transit Gateway-level flow telemetry can identify attachment context absent from local application logs explains a different case, for example when a shared-services VPC receives unexpected traffic and must correlate which transit attachment it came from. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that traffic Mirroring copies selected packet traffic instead of only summarized flow metadata; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking explains a different case, for example when a hybrid transit network has many attachments and needs a central view of route reachability and network events. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that traffic Mirroring copies selected packet traffic instead of only summarized flow metadata; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
CloudTrail records control-plane API activity rather than every forwarded network packet explains a different case, for example when an organization wants retained proof of networking API configuration changes across AWS accounts. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that traffic Mirroring copies selected packet traffic instead of only summarized flow metadata; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 86
Following remediation of "An AWS Config rule finds unauthorized changes in VPC route tables but nobody learns about them until audit time", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
A denied path change is caught in preview or pre-production reachability validation
A test route violation generates an incident and follows the approved correction path
A test event triggers only the intended reversible isolation and records ownership
New attachments include required cost-center and environment tags with denied exceptions
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A test route violation generates an incident and follows the approved correction path. This directly tests whether the selected change, connect compliance findings to monitored EventBridge events and appropriate remediation workflow, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that compliance evaluation should drive timely notification or controlled auto-remediation. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A denied path change is caught in preview or pre-production reachability validation might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network pipeline requires assurance that a proposed security group modification will not break known dependencies. This question instead requires demonstrating that a test route violation generates an incident and follows the approved correction path. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A test event triggers only the intended reversible isolation and records ownership might confirm another remediation, for instance when an application subnet must be isolated automatically whenever a security event tags it as compromised. This question instead requires demonstrating that a test route violation generates an incident and follows the approved correction path. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
New attachments include required cost-center and environment tags with denied exceptions might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network organization wants consistent subnet and Transit Gateway attachment tagging across all business accounts. This question instead requires demonstrating that a test route violation generates an incident and follows the approved correction path. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 87
AWS architects plan to Enable supported WAF logs or sampled requests with redaction of sensitive fields for this requirement: A WAF web ACL blocks some requests unexpectedly and the team only has total request counts. Which principle is MOST relevant?
CloudTrail records resource API changes and actor context rather than every network packet
Network anomaly interpretation relies on representative historical baselines
WAF rule evaluation records can identify specific matching rules and terminating actions
Different AWS networking services emit different schemas that require a governed collection architecture
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
WAF rule evaluation records can identify specific matching rules and terminating actions. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, enable supported WAF logs or sampled requests with redaction of sensitive fields, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, an aggregate blocked-request graph cannot reveal the responsible request rule. A suitable verification is that a synthetic match produces the expected rule ID without logging sensitive secrets.
Incorrect Answers
A:
CloudTrail records resource API changes and actor context rather than every network packet explains a different case, for example when a SOC needs a historical record of security group changes and the principal who made each change. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that wAF rule evaluation records can identify specific matching rules and terminating actions; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Network anomaly interpretation relies on representative historical baselines explains a different case, for example when a network operations dashboard shows an unusual traffic drop but there is no measure of pre-incident throughput. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that wAF rule evaluation records can identify specific matching rules and terminating actions; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Different AWS networking services emit different schemas that require a governed collection architecture explains a different case, for example when a company needs to preserve compliance evidence from ALB, CloudFront, and Network Firewall in one protected location. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that wAF rule evaluation records can identify specific matching rules and terminating actions; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 88
The team addressed this problem: A business needs a defensible hybrid network baseline for latency, packet loss, and utilization before adding Direct Connect. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
Dashboards show cache hit changes and matching origin requests around a test interval
An intentional backend error is visible with the expected request and target status
A controlled packet reaches the collector with the expected headers and payload
Pre-change and post-change traces include consistent times, directions, and traffic classes
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Pre-change and post-change traces include consistent times, directions, and traffic classes. This directly tests whether the selected change, collect repeated synthetic measurements and link metrics across representative routes and times, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that network performance comparisons need consistent vantage points and traffic conditions. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that one successful ping cannot establish capacity, jitter, or long-term service resilience.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Dashboards show cache hit changes and matching origin requests around a test interval might confirm another remediation, for instance when a customer says a CloudFront distribution is slow but has no edge cache or origin performance baseline. This question instead requires demonstrating that pre-change and post-change traces include consistent times, directions, and traffic classes. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
An intentional backend error is visible with the expected request and target status might confirm another remediation, for instance when a multi-region API owner wants to distinguish ALB client errors from backend target failures. This question instead requires demonstrating that pre-change and post-change traces include consistent times, directions, and traffic classes. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A controlled packet reaches the collector with the expected headers and payload might confirm another remediation, for instance when a security analyst must inspect packet payload characteristics from supported EC2 network interfaces in a lab. This question instead requires demonstrating that pre-change and post-change traces include consistent times, directions, and traffic classes. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 89
A network review finds: An attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
Available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity
An egress-only internet gateway does not translate IPv6 clients into IPv4 destinations
A working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected
An expanded route table does not repair two destinations using the same address block
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity. The missing control matters because transit Gateway attachments and route tables control forwarding independently of attachment health. The appropriate corrective action is to add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables. To check the outcome, verify that the correct target attachment appears in the evaluated route path for both directions.
Incorrect Answers
B:
An egress-only internet gateway does not translate IPv6 clients into IPv4 destinations can be a real consequence when a VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured. Here the relevant failure is that available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected can be a real consequence when a service team has two private subnets but one subnet has no route toward the shared Transit Gateway. Here the relevant failure is that available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
An expanded route table does not repair two destinations using the same address block can be a real consequence when a multi-account network has many inconsistent VPC subnet CIDRs that overlap a corporate VPN route. Here the relevant failure is that available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 90
Following remediation of "A network operations dashboard shows an unusual traffic drop but there is no measure of pre-incident throughput", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
A test rule update has a corresponding CloudTrail event with actor and timestamp
A synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline
A test broad ingress change triggers a routed compliance finding and workflow
A correlated timeline identifies a relevant route change before observed flow failures
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline. This directly tests whether the selected change, define CloudWatch metrics and baseline performance ranges with meaningful anomaly alarms, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that network anomaly interpretation relies on representative historical baselines. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a single low-throughput data point without context can trigger false attribution.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A test rule update has a corresponding CloudTrail event with actor and timestamp might confirm another remediation, for instance when a SOC needs a historical record of security group changes and the principal who made each change. This question instead requires demonstrating that a synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A test broad ingress change triggers a routed compliance finding and workflow might confirm another remediation, for instance when a security team wants automatic alerting on permissive security-group changes in sensitive VPCs. This question instead requires demonstrating that a synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
A correlated timeline identifies a relevant route change before observed flow failures might confirm another remediation, for instance when a SOC wants to distinguish whether a network outage followed a VPC routing update or an application deployment. This question instead requires demonstrating that a synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
