Question 70
Following remediation of "A spoke VPC with a default route to Transit Gateway cannot reach the internet through central NAT because the egress VPC lacks the return path", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
An IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint
A test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress
The intended subnet route tables each identify the Transit Gateway as next hop
Clients use private endpoint names and do not receive broad provider route access
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress. This directly tests whether the selected change, complete egress and return routing through the transit attachment, NAT gateway and gateway route tables, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that centralized egress must provide a working bidirectional route chain through stateful NAT. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that putting 0.0.0.0/0 in one spoke subnet is insufficient by itself.
Incorrect Answers
A:
An IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint might confirm another remediation, for instance when a VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured. This question instead requires demonstrating that a test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
The intended subnet route tables each identify the Transit Gateway as next hop might confirm another remediation, for instance when a service team has two private subnets but one subnet has no route toward the shared Transit Gateway. This question instead requires demonstrating that a test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Clients use private endpoint names and do not receive broad provider route access might confirm another remediation, for instance when an on-premises office needs private access to a service distributed across provider VPCs with overlapping CIDRs. This question instead requires demonstrating that a test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 71
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A connection uses two Direct Connect links and business policy requires a preferred active path rather than equal splitting. Which outcome is the principal concern?
A colocation-wide power event can remove both nominally redundant links
A VPC route toward the branch alone cannot deliver response packets back on premises
Identical routing attributes may distribute flows differently from a specified active-passive intent
Successful small ICMP probes do not rule out fragmentation black holes
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Identical routing attributes may distribute flows differently from a specified active-passive intent. The missing control matters because hybrid active/standby routing is a path-selection policy rather than simply two physical links. The appropriate corrective action is to set supported routing attributes and appropriate customer-side BGP policy for the intended priority. To check the outcome, verify that route tables select the preferred link and revert on primary failure.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A colocation-wide power event can remove both nominally redundant links can be a real consequence when a company wants a redundant connection but its two hosted Direct Connect links terminate in the same colocation facility. Here the relevant failure is that identical routing attributes may distribute flows differently from a specified active-passive intent. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A VPC route toward the branch alone cannot deliver response packets back on premises can be a real consequence when a remote branch cannot reach AWS because its advertised VPC return prefix is absent from the corporate router. Here the relevant failure is that identical routing attributes may distribute flows differently from a specified active-passive intent. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Successful small ICMP probes do not rule out fragmentation black holes can be a real consequence when a cloud-hosted service is reachable over VPN but larger TLS messages time out despite small pings succeeding. Here the relevant failure is that identical routing attributes may distribute flows differently from a specified active-passive intent. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 72
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: Two VPCs in one Region need a simple low-cost direct connection with nonoverlapping CIDR blocks. What is the MOST direct risk?
Peering two transit gateways does not automatically propagate every VPC route across Regions
Attaching a firewall VPC alone does not force other attachments to traverse it
Assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance
Deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity. The missing control matters because peering provides direct private connectivity but no automatic transitive routing. The appropriate corrective action is to use VPC peering and configure both VPC route tables and applicable security rules. To check the outcome, verify that bidirectional traffic succeeds while unrelated third-party networks remain unreachable.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Peering two transit gateways does not automatically propagate every VPC route across Regions can be a real consequence when a multi-region service requires selected cross-region VPC connectivity without moving packets over ordinary public internet routes. Here the relevant failure is that deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Attaching a firewall VPC alone does not force other attachments to traverse it can be a real consequence when a company wants security appliances in one inspection VPC but discovers spoke traffic can bypass the appliance. Here the relevant failure is that deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance can be a real consequence when many application accounts share centrally owned subnet infrastructure but require isolated resource ownership. Here the relevant failure is that deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 73
For this networking situation, A central networking account wants to accept VPC attachments from member accounts without granting them full gateway administration, the team applies "Share Transit Gateway through RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and identity policy". Which validation is strongest?
Approved member accounts create only permitted attachments and central acceptance is recorded
The owner updates routes while the participant deploys supported workload resources
Forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy
The correct target attachment appears in the evaluated route path for both directions
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Approved member accounts create only permitted attachments and central acceptance is recorded. This directly tests whether the selected change, share Transit Gateway through RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and identity policy, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that resource sharing grants a controlled attachment capability without transferring central gateway ownership. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that making everyone a Transit Gateway administrator increases unintended topology changes.
Incorrect Answers
B:
The owner updates routes while the participant deploys supported workload resources might confirm another remediation, for instance when an AWS organization has a shared VPC but a participant account cannot edit the subnet route table it does not own. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved member accounts create only permitted attachments and central acceptance is recorded. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy might confirm another remediation, for instance when a VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved member accounts create only permitted attachments and central acceptance is recorded. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
The correct target attachment appears in the evaluated route path for both directions might confirm another remediation, for instance when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved member accounts create only permitted attachments and central acceptance is recorded. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 74
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: A public application has two regional ALBs and wants traffic to fail away from an entire unhealthy application Region?
Network Load Balancer alone does not provide equivalent HTTP cache and WAF request inspection
An unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints
DNS-only switching can leave clients pinned to cached unhealthy addresses
An edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
An unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints. The missing control matters because global Accelerator manages healthy regional endpoint selection independently of customer DNS caches. The appropriate corrective action is to attach both regional ALBs as Global Accelerator endpoints and enable health-based routing. To check the outcome, verify that traffic distribution excludes the failed ALB endpoint without client address changes.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Network Load Balancer alone does not provide equivalent HTTP cache and WAF request inspection can be a real consequence when a web application needs HTTP edge caching and WAF protection but was placed behind a TCP-only NLB. Here the relevant failure is that an unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
DNS-only switching can leave clients pinned to cached unhealthy addresses can be a real consequence when a multiplayer client cannot tolerate DNS change delays during regional failure and uses UDP transport. Here the relevant failure is that an unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
An edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction can be a real consequence when a media business has regional data residency rules for viewers and cannot send all users to one origin. Here the relevant failure is that an unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 75
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: A central networking account owns a Transit Gateway, but a workload account cannot attach without approved sharing. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Use routed egress VPC design with appropriate Transit Gateway attachment and NAT/firewall architecture
Combine service-specific PrivateLink endpoints with controlled DNS records and endpoint policies
Share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy
Redesign using explicit A-to-C peering or a suitable Transit Gateway transit architecture
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because aWS RAM enables resource sharing without making the spoke account the transit resource owner. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that copying the Transit Gateway ID alone does not grant the account attachment permission. Confirm the improvement by showing that the approved attachment becomes available under the intended central control policy.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use routed egress VPC design with appropriate Transit Gateway attachment and NAT/firewall architecture would address a different scenario, such as when a large AWS organization needs egress through centralized networking while preserving per-spoke isolation. The present issue requires share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Combine service-specific PrivateLink endpoints with controlled DNS records and endpoint policies would address a different scenario, such as when an enterprise tries to make private endpoints in many accounts resolve consistently while preserving independent service accounts. The present issue requires share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Redesign using explicit A-to-C peering or a suitable Transit Gateway transit architecture would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants three VPCs connected through VPC peering and expects traffic from A to reach C by traversing B. The present issue requires share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 76
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A multi-region application requires inter-Region Transit Gateway peering but regional routes were not installed. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider
Share Transit Gateway through RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and identity policy
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies
Add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because transit Gateway inter-Region peering requires explicit routes to remote CIDRs. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that relying on automatic BGP route propagation across peering is unsupported in this pattern. Confirm the improvement by showing that both regions show reciprocal routes and expected application flows succeed.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises office needs private access to a service distributed across provider VPCs with overlapping CIDRs. The present issue requires add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Share Transit Gateway through RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and identity policy would address a different scenario, such as when a central networking account wants to accept VPC attachments from member accounts without granting them full gateway administration. The present issue requires add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies would address a different scenario, such as when a team wants to restrict S3 access through a gateway endpoint to specific buckets. The present issue requires add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 77
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A SaaS service works from one branch but fails from another while both share central AWS Transit Gateway connectivity. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Compare branch-advertised prefixes, return routes, NAT and firewall state for each site
Use Route Analyzer and relevant gateway flow logs with timestamps to identify attachment hops
Check MTU and path-MTU discovery across Direct Connect, VPC and overlay hops
Correlate Flow Log results with security-group, NACL, route and Reachability Analyzer evidence
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Compare branch-advertised prefixes, return routes, NAT and firewall state for each site. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because similar AWS attachments do not imply identical on-premises policy or address translation. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that editing the cloud workload SG based on one branch can introduce unnecessary exposure. Confirm the improvement by showing that a packet-path comparison locates the failing branch's distinct policy or translation step.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Use Route Analyzer and relevant gateway flow logs with timestamps to identify attachment hops would address a different scenario, such as when a multi-VPC application shows intermittent failure only when crossing a Transit Gateway after a recent route change. The present issue requires compare branch-advertised prefixes, return routes, NAT and firewall state for each site because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Check MTU and path-MTU discovery across Direct Connect, VPC and overlay hops would address a different scenario, such as when a Direct Connect path carries small pings but large data transfers repeatedly stall after a network change. The present issue requires compare branch-advertised prefixes, return routes, NAT and firewall state for each site because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Correlate Flow Log results with security-group, NACL, route and Reachability Analyzer evidence would address a different scenario, such as when a flow log shows REJECT for a source and destination but a technician cannot tell which specific ACL caused it. The present issue requires compare branch-advertised prefixes, return routes, NAT and firewall state for each site because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 78
For the scenario "A company needs a redundant Site-to-Site VPN and both standard tunnels terminate on customer gateway devices", the proposed response is "Configure both VPN tunnels and track routing or static route policy for failover". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
Direct Connect alone provides private transport rather than inherent IP payload encryption
AWS Site-to-Site VPN connections normally supply two tunnels for availability
Prefix overlap and route preference can silently divert traffic to unintended networks
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
AWS Site-to-Site VPN connections normally supply two tunnels for availability. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, configure both VPN tunnels and track routing or static route policy for failover, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, operating only one tunnel sacrifices built-in redundancy during endpoint maintenance. A suitable verification is that failing one tunnel leaves the second route and connectivity operational.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Direct Connect alone provides private transport rather than inherent IP payload encryption explains a different case, for example when a company must encrypt sensitive hybrid application traffic even though it uses a private Direct Connect circuit. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that aWS Site-to-Site VPN connections normally supply two tunnels for availability; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Hybrid resiliency requires independent path failure modes and controlled route preference explains a different case, for example when a bank needs predictable private connectivity into AWS with an internet VPN failover during circuit outage. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that aWS Site-to-Site VPN connections normally supply two tunnels for availability; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Prefix overlap and route preference can silently divert traffic to unintended networks explains a different case, for example when an on-premises route is summarized too broadly and overlaps multiple cloud address ranges. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that aWS Site-to-Site VPN connections normally supply two tunnels for availability; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 79
A cloud architect observes the following gap: An on-premises firewall permits IPSec negotiation but blocks encapsulated user traffic after tunnel setup. Which outcome is the principal concern?
Assuming static VPN routing detects every remote CIDR change can blackhole traffic
An up port without BGP routes leaves VPC address ranges unreachable
Restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic
Successful small ICMP probes do not rule out fragmentation black holes
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic. The missing control matters because a successful IKE negotiation is not proof that permitted data-plane flows traverse the tunnel. The appropriate corrective action is to review IPsec security associations, protected networks, and return-route/filter policy. To check the outcome, verify that tunnel counters rise for intended traffic and end-to-end probes succeed.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Assuming static VPN routing detects every remote CIDR change can blackhole traffic can be a real consequence when a customer VPN uses static routing while the team expects automatic failover after network changes. Here the relevant failure is that restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
An up port without BGP routes leaves VPC address ranges unreachable can be a real consequence when an approved Direct Connect connection is provisioned but private prefixes do not appear in the data center BGP table. Here the relevant failure is that restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Successful small ICMP probes do not rule out fragmentation black holes can be a real consequence when a cloud-hosted service is reachable over VPN but larger TLS messages time out despite small pings succeeding. Here the relevant failure is that restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 80
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A multi-account organization pays for duplicated NAT gateways in every tiny development VPC. What is the MOST direct risk?
An ordinary ENI is not automatically equivalent to an EFA for HPC communication
A change in DNS TTL alone does not fix every suboptimal internet transit path
Sending every read across Regions can waste bandwidth despite local available replicas
Centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The missing control matters because centralized NAT can reduce resource count but add transit cost and blast radius. The appropriate corrective action is to evaluate centralized egress against resilience, traffic, routing, and data-processing costs. To check the outcome, verify that a measured cost-and-failover model supports the selected egress design.
Incorrect Answers
A:
An ordinary ENI is not automatically equivalent to an EFA for HPC communication can be a real consequence when an HPC application needs low-latency communication among tightly coupled EC2 nodes. Here the relevant failure is that centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A change in DNS TTL alone does not fix every suboptimal internet transit path can be a real consequence when a global HTTP API has regional users with highly variable internet route quality and cannot tolerate long path detours. Here the relevant failure is that centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Sending every read across Regions can waste bandwidth despite local available replicas can be a real consequence when a team wants to minimize inter-Region data charges for a global workload with frequent large cross-region responses. Here the relevant failure is that centralizing solely to remove hourly NAT cost may increase data transfer and failure impact. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
