AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 77
Question 760
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: An organization needs central domain and IP reputation filtering for outbound workloads in many AWS accounts. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Move the required explicit subnet deny to an NACL or use compatible firewall policy
Require approved RAM principals and Transit Gateway attachment acceptance or controlled network policy
Use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports
Deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because egress inspection applies filtering only to traffic intentionally routed through the control. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that a standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections. Confirm the improvement by showing that approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Move the required explicit subnet deny to an NACL or use compatible firewall policy would address a different scenario, such as when a developer says a security group deny rule should override an earlier allow but SG rules have no explicit deny action. The present issue requires deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Require approved RAM principals and Transit Gateway attachment acceptance or controlled network policy would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants to prevent untrusted VPCs from attaching to a central Transit Gateway automatically. The present issue requires deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports would address a different scenario, such as when a network engineer opens all ephemeral ports inbound in a security group believing return packets require explicit permits. The present issue requires deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 761
An engineer selects the change "Finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain" because A public zone uses DNSSEC but the registrar does not publish the required DS record. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
DNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data
Resolver query logs provide query-name and source-related metadata for VPC DNS activity
Weighted records influence proportions of DNS responses, not guaranteed individual HTTP requests
Outbound endpoint ENI source IPs need permitted DNS transport to target name servers
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
DNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, enabling signatures without correct delegation may not give validating resolvers the expected trust path. A suitable verification is that external DNSSEC validation succeeds and tampered data is rejected.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Resolver query logs provide query-name and source-related metadata for VPC DNS activity explains a different case, for example when an enterprise must trace which VPC originated suspicious DNS lookups without full packet capture. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Weighted records influence proportions of DNS responses, not guaranteed individual HTTP requests explains a different case, for example when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Outbound endpoint ENI source IPs need permitted DNS transport to target name servers explains a different case, for example when an internal domain resolves correctly on the corporate network but fails in a VPC because the DNS server only answers from approved source IPs. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 762
Following remediation of "A compliance group wants clients to reject an expired ALB certificate before signing into a banking app", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
A renegotiated tunnel reports only approved algorithms and continues required connectivity
Pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check
A controlled capture shows protected encrypted traffic over the designated circuit
Validating resolvers accept correct child answers and reject forged signatures
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check. This directly tests whether the selected change, use an ACM-managed public certificate with monitoring and renewal procedure, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that certificate lifecycle management covers issuance, renewal, binding and expiration. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that an expired or wrong-name certificate defeats trusted HTTPS despite an open TCP port.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A renegotiated tunnel reports only approved algorithms and continues required connectivity might confirm another remediation, for instance when a Site-to-Site VPN has an old cipher suite that is no longer permitted under corporate cryptographic policy. This question instead requires demonstrating that pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A controlled capture shows protected encrypted traffic over the designated circuit might confirm another remediation, for instance when a financial firm uses Direct Connect for regulated traffic but needs cryptographic protection while crossing the private circuit. This question instead requires demonstrating that pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Validating resolvers accept correct child answers and reject forged signatures might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network team requires DNSSEC verification across a delegated child zone but its validating clients report bogus answers. This question instead requires demonstrating that pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 763
A team chooses to Replace hardcoded environment identifiers with parameters, discovery and account-scoped outputs after observing: A multi-account transit network uses fixed VPC IDs in scripts and deployment to new accounts fails. Which result would BEST verify the change?
A denied path change is caught in preview or pre-production reachability validation
A negative test template fails validation before creating a prohibited route
The same template deploys with unique IDs and correct attachment references per account
New attachments include required cost-center and environment tags with denied exceptions
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
The same template deploys with unique IDs and correct attachment references per account. This directly tests whether the selected change, replace hardcoded environment identifiers with parameters, discovery and account-scoped outputs, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that iaC templates should resolve environment-specific identifiers rather than assuming global IDs. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that copying a raw VPC ID across accounts creates nonexistent or wrong-target references.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A denied path change is caught in preview or pre-production reachability validation might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network pipeline requires assurance that a proposed security group modification will not break known dependencies. This question instead requires demonstrating that the same template deploys with unique IDs and correct attachment references per account. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
A negative test template fails validation before creating a prohibited route might confirm another remediation, for instance when a team wants a new VPC module to expose only approved prefixes rather than permitting default routes to any peer. This question instead requires demonstrating that the same template deploys with unique IDs and correct attachment references per account. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
New attachments include required cost-center and environment tags with denied exceptions might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network organization wants consistent subnet and Transit Gateway attachment tagging across all business accounts. This question instead requires demonstrating that the same template deploys with unique IDs and correct attachment references per account. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 764
The team addressed this problem: A local firewall routes database traffic via Direct Connect but the AWS VPC return route points to VPN. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
Tunnel renegotiation succeeds across the expected maintenance and rekey intervals
BGP and route-table views restore the intended VPC prefix with working round-trip probes
Consumers resolve the new endpoint and request traces use current ENI destinations
Both directions use the expected firewall path and sessions remain established
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Both directions use the expected firewall path and sessions remain established. This directly tests whether the selected change, align BGP and VPC route choices for consistent forward and return paths, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that asymmetric hybrid routing can break stateful firewall connection tracking. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that two individually valid routes can still fail when stateful middleboxes see only one direction.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Tunnel renegotiation succeeds across the expected maintenance and rekey intervals might confirm another remediation, for instance when a site VPN fails at regular intervals due to expired or incompatible Internet Key Exchange settings. This question instead requires demonstrating that both directions use the expected firewall path and sessions remain established. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
BGP and route-table views restore the intended VPC prefix with working round-trip probes might confirm another remediation, for instance when an on-premises application loses access to a VPC after a BGP policy change on the customer Direct Connect router. This question instead requires demonstrating that both directions use the expected firewall path and sessions remain established. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Consumers resolve the new endpoint and request traces use current ENI destinations might confirm another remediation, for instance when a VPC interface endpoint is deleted and recreated but scripts still target the former endpoint DNS name. This question instead requires demonstrating that both directions use the expected firewall path and sessions remain established. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 765
A network review finds: A company has a 1 Gbps Direct Connect and sees packet drops only when sending oversized frames across a VPN overlay. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
Enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU
A public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs
An accelerated VPN endpoint does not remove all customer last-mile and tunnel constraints
Selecting a private VIF does not by itself authorize routing to all AWS public IP services
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU. The missing control matters because encapsulation headers reduce usable payload MTU even when underlying links support jumbo frames. The appropriate corrective action is to plan consistent end-to-end MTU and MSS handling across tunnel encapsulation. To check the outcome, verify that trace tests show the largest permitted packet traverses the overlay without blackholing.
Incorrect Answers
B:
A public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs can be a real consequence when a company needs private access to many VPCs through one dedicated connection without individual VIF per VPC. Here the relevant failure is that enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
An accelerated VPN endpoint does not remove all customer last-mile and tunnel constraints can be a real consequence when a remote office experiences internet variability to the selected AWS VPN region and wants improved entry routing. Here the relevant failure is that enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Selecting a private VIF does not by itself authorize routing to all AWS public IP services can be a real consequence when a corporate office needs AWS public service endpoints over a dedicated public routing path without private VPC address exchange. Here the relevant failure is that enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 766
Following remediation of "A multi-region service requires selected cross-region VPC connectivity without moving packets over ordinary public internet routes", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Each consuming account resolves the private service endpoint and unrelated services remain blocked
Cross-region probe follows both configured gateway route tables and reaches permitted prefixes
A permitted spoke-to-spoke flow uses only approved Transit Gateway routes
Participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Cross-region probe follows both configured gateway route tables and reaches permitted prefixes. This directly tests whether the selected change, design inter-Region Transit Gateway peering with routes on both gateways and attachments, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that transit Gateway peering supports private cross-region connectivity with explicit route table configuration. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that peering two transit gateways does not automatically propagate every VPC route across Regions.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Each consuming account resolves the private service endpoint and unrelated services remain blocked might confirm another remediation, for instance when an enterprise tries to make private endpoints in many accounts resolve consistently while preserving independent service accounts. This question instead requires demonstrating that cross-region probe follows both configured gateway route tables and reaches permitted prefixes. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A permitted spoke-to-spoke flow uses only approved Transit Gateway routes might confirm another remediation, for instance when a group has dozens of VPCs requiring selective hub-and-spoke reachability rather than hundreds of peering links. This question instead requires demonstrating that cross-region probe follows both configured gateway route tables and reaches permitted prefixes. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced might confirm another remediation, for instance when many application accounts share centrally owned subnet infrastructure but require isolated resource ownership. This question instead requires demonstrating that cross-region probe follows both configured gateway route tables and reaches permitted prefixes. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 767
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A Direct Connect path carries small pings but large data transfers repeatedly stall after a network change. Which outcome is the principal concern?
Restarting EC2 instances does not change a security-group-denied flow
A smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation
Application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings
VPC Flow Logs cannot disclose full TCP flags and application payload content
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings. The missing control matters because packet-size mismatches can create black holes when required ICMP feedback is filtered. The appropriate corrective action is to check MTU and path-MTU discovery across Direct Connect, VPC and overlay hops. To check the outcome, verify that controlled payload-size tests identify a stable maximum that supports full transfers.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Restarting EC2 instances does not change a security-group-denied flow can be a real consequence when two EC2 instances cannot connect and VPC Reachability Analyzer reports a blocked security group rule. Here the relevant failure is that application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation can be a real consequence when a company is investigating short bursts of traffic that disappear from five-minute aggregated metrics. Here the relevant failure is that application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
VPC Flow Logs cannot disclose full TCP flags and application payload content can be a real consequence when an investigation requires knowing whether an EC2 guest received a malformed packet that flow records cannot describe. Here the relevant failure is that application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 768
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: An AWS Config rule finds unauthorized changes in VPC route tables but nobody learns about them until audit time. What is the MOST direct risk?
Human review alone can miss unauthorized CIDR changes repeated across many stacks
Deleting security resources without checking active use can interrupt legitimate connections
Updating only AWS static routes can strand a branch whose router never changed
A dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
A dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist. The missing control matters because compliance evaluation should drive timely notification or controlled auto-remediation. The appropriate corrective action is to connect compliance findings to monitored EventBridge events and appropriate remediation workflow. To check the outcome, verify that a test route violation generates an incident and follows the approved correction path.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Human review alone can miss unauthorized CIDR changes repeated across many stacks can be a real consequence when a team wants a new VPC module to expose only approved prefixes rather than permitting default routes to any peer. Here the relevant failure is that a dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Deleting security resources without checking active use can interrupt legitimate connections can be a real consequence when a team deletes old security groups using a cron job but removes groups still referenced by ENIs. Here the relevant failure is that a dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Updating only AWS static routes can strand a branch whose router never changed can be a real consequence when a branch network device change must synchronize with AWS TGW changes but vendor configuration is committed separately. Here the relevant failure is that a dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 769
A network review finds: A Route 53 failover record references a health check that tests only the landing page while the API path is broken. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
A healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API
Changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN
An overly broad rule can send normal internet DNS queries to a corporate resolver that cannot answer
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
A healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API. The missing control matters because dNS-based failover quality depends on application-aware endpoint health evidence. The appropriate corrective action is to configure health checks or calculated checks that reflect the actual application requirement. To check the outcome, verify that simulated API failure moves DNS selection to a verified healthy endpoint.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution can be a real consequence when a public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers. Here the relevant failure is that a healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN can be a real consequence when a company runs a split-horizon domain in public and private hosted zones and finds internal users seeing the wrong record. Here the relevant failure is that a healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
An overly broad rule can send normal internet DNS queries to a corporate resolver that cannot answer can be a real consequence when an EC2 instance needs corporate DNS resolution but a broad forwarding rule also intercepts public domain lookups. Here the relevant failure is that a healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 770
Following remediation of "A public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Simulated API failure moves DNS selection to a verified healthy endpoint
Independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers
External DNSSEC validation succeeds and tampered data is rejected
Corporate resolver logs show queries from approved endpoint addresses and responses return
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers. This directly tests whether the selected change, correct authoritative NS delegation at the registrar or parent DNS zone, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that public DNS follows delegation chain name-server records rather than the zone console selected by users. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Simulated API failure moves DNS selection to a verified healthy endpoint might confirm another remediation, for instance when a Route 53 failover record references a health check that tests only the landing page while the API path is broken. This question instead requires demonstrating that independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
External DNSSEC validation succeeds and tampered data is rejected might confirm another remediation, for instance when a public zone uses DNSSEC but the registrar does not publish the required DS record. This question instead requires demonstrating that independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Corporate resolver logs show queries from approved endpoint addresses and responses return might confirm another remediation, for instance when an internal domain resolves correctly on the corporate network but fails in a VPC because the DNS server only answers from approved source IPs. This question instead requires demonstrating that independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
