AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 74
Question 730
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—A company retires a public NAT egress path but monitoring shows applications still using it—which action should the engineer take?
Split gateway responsibility across independent devices and test route withdrawal
Map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop
Reconcile endpoint-service permissions, acceptance state, and private DNS configuration
Compare advertised and accepted prefixes and restore the intended route policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because egress architecture changes are enforced by subnet routing, not only NAT resource inventory. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that deleting a NAT gateway before moving default routes can interrupt workloads. Confirm the improvement by showing that source-path traces and billed transfer show traffic on the intended new exit path.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Split gateway responsibility across independent devices and test route withdrawal would address a different scenario, such as when a customer configures redundant links but a single customer gateway remains the only advertised next hop. The present issue requires map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Reconcile endpoint-service permissions, acceptance state, and private DNS configuration would address a different scenario, such as when a service needs a private cross-account endpoint but a deployment removed its consumer endpoint acceptance. The present issue requires map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Compare advertised and accepted prefixes and restore the intended route policy would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises application loses access to a VPC after a BGP policy change on the customer Direct Connect router. The present issue requires map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 731
A team chooses to Enable supported WAF logs or sampled requests with redaction of sensitive fields after observing: A WAF web ACL blocks some requests unexpectedly and the team only has total request counts. Which result would BEST verify the change?
Test resolver queries are retained with origin context and required permissions
The expected action and source fields appear for allowed and rejected test flows
A synthetic match produces the expected rule ID without logging sensitive secrets
A correlated timeline identifies a relevant route change before observed flow failures
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
A synthetic match produces the expected rule ID without logging sensitive secrets. This directly tests whether the selected change, enable supported WAF logs or sampled requests with redaction of sensitive fields, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that wAF rule evaluation records can identify specific matching rules and terminating actions. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that an aggregate blocked-request graph cannot reveal the responsible request rule.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Test resolver queries are retained with origin context and required permissions might confirm another remediation, for instance when a compliance team must audit DNS usage for malicious domains from workloads that use VPC resolver. This question instead requires demonstrating that a synthetic match produces the expected rule ID without logging sensitive secrets. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
The expected action and source fields appear for allowed and rejected test flows might confirm another remediation, for instance when a response team has VPC Flow Logs but cannot distinguish accepted and rejected internet attempts by source subnet. This question instead requires demonstrating that a synthetic match produces the expected rule ID without logging sensitive secrets. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
A correlated timeline identifies a relevant route change before observed flow failures might confirm another remediation, for instance when a SOC wants to distinguish whether a network outage followed a VPC routing update or an application deployment. This question instead requires demonstrating that a synthetic match produces the expected rule ID without logging sensitive secrets. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 732
The team addressed this problem: An EC2-based application needs inbound HTTPS from a trusted proxy but no public SSH connections. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
Permitted bucket operations succeed and excluded bucket calls fail authorization
Test requests from documented allowed and denied locations match the reviewed policy
A deliberately broad test rule produces a finding and the approved correction workflow
The proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
The proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH. This directly tests whether the selected change, use a least-privilege stateful security group with the exact required source and port, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that security groups use stateful allow rules for supported resources and connections. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that an unrestricted 0.0.0.0/0 administrator port expands unnecessary attack surface.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Permitted bucket operations succeed and excluded bucket calls fail authorization might confirm another remediation, for instance when an internal endpoint for S3 must permit only a specified business bucket although a subnet route to the service is present. This question instead requires demonstrating that the proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Test requests from documented allowed and denied locations match the reviewed policy might confirm another remediation, for instance when a production ALB must accept only approved client geographies under documented policy while retaining measured business exceptions. This question instead requires demonstrating that the proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A deliberately broad test rule produces a finding and the approved correction workflow might confirm another remediation, for instance when an organization wants automated discovery of broad SSH security-group rules across its accounts. This question instead requires demonstrating that the proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 733
An engineer selects the change "Assess accelerated Site-to-Site VPN compatibility and route to the nearest AWS edge" because A remote office experiences internet variability to the selected AWS VPN region and wants improved entry routing. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Accelerated VPN can use AWS global network to reduce some internet-path variability
Direct Connect alone provides private transport rather than inherent IP payload encryption
BGP path selection uses advertised prefixes and applicable attributes at each decision point
Direct Connect gateway enables supported private routing connectivity to eligible gateways
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Accelerated VPN can use AWS global network to reduce some internet-path variability. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, assess accelerated Site-to-Site VPN compatibility and route to the nearest AWS edge, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, an accelerated VPN endpoint does not remove all customer last-mile and tunnel constraints. A suitable verification is that measured sustained tunnel latency and loss improve under matching supported conditions.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Direct Connect alone provides private transport rather than inherent IP payload encryption explains a different case, for example when a company must encrypt sensitive hybrid application traffic even though it uses a private Direct Connect circuit. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that accelerated VPN can use AWS global network to reduce some internet-path variability; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
BGP path selection uses advertised prefixes and applicable attributes at each decision point explains a different case, for example when an enterprise wants routing priority between two BGP peers without changing every application subnet. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that accelerated VPN can use AWS global network to reduce some internet-path variability; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Direct Connect gateway enables supported private routing connectivity to eligible gateways explains a different case, for example when a company needs private access to many VPCs through one dedicated connection without individual VIF per VPC. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that accelerated VPN can use AWS global network to reduce some internet-path variability; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 734
For the scenario "A website requires viewers in distant locations to reach the nearest available HTTP edge with HTTPS termination", the proposed response is "Use a CloudFront distribution with appropriate viewer certificate and origins". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
Geographic access controls and origin selection must align with legal data location requirements
Content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing
Global Accelerator steering uses stable anycast IPs rather than relying solely on resolver TTL
Origin access control lets CloudFront fetch private S3 objects through supported signed requests
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use a CloudFront distribution with appropriate viewer certificate and origins, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, publishing a single regional public IP alone may create avoidable geographic latency. A suitable verification is that viewer traces resolve to edge delivery and the origin receives only needed fetches.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Geographic access controls and origin selection must align with legal data location requirements explains a different case, for example when a media business has regional data residency rules for viewers and cannot send all users to one origin. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Global Accelerator steering uses stable anycast IPs rather than relying solely on resolver TTL explains a different case, for example when a multiplayer client cannot tolerate DNS change delays during regional failure and uses UDP transport. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Origin access control lets CloudFront fetch private S3 objects through supported signed requests explains a different case, for example when an S3 static asset origin behind CloudFront must deny direct anonymous bucket reads. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 735
A cloud architect observes the following gap: An EKS application connects to a private database through Transit Gateway but replies take a different uninspected route. Which outcome is the principal concern?
A valid endpoint ENI cannot authorize a consumer whose principal is not permitted
Available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity
Asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets
Assuming a participant can administer all shared VPC routes ignores the owner-account boundary
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets. The missing control matters because stateful appliances depend on observing both directions of the same flow. The appropriate corrective action is to make forward and return Transit Gateway and VPC routes symmetric around stateful inspection. To check the outcome, verify that bidirectional trace shows the same inspection path for allowed database connections.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A valid endpoint ENI cannot authorize a consumer whose principal is not permitted can be a real consequence when a provider account restricts PrivateLink endpoint-service connections but a new consumer account still cannot connect. Here the relevant failure is that asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity can be a real consequence when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. Here the relevant failure is that asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Assuming a participant can administer all shared VPC routes ignores the owner-account boundary can be a real consequence when an AWS organization has a shared VPC but a participant account cannot edit the subnet route table it does not own. Here the relevant failure is that asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 736
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A custom TCP service requires encrypted transport without exposing keys at the wrong layer. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Establish supported Site-to-Site VPN over Direct Connect or end-to-end application encryption
Use HTTPS target groups with valid backend certificates or another approved protected backend hop
Require HTTPS-only origin protocol policy and validate origin TLS identity
Choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because tLS listener selection determines which endpoint terminates and validates encryption. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that assuming a TCP listener automatically performs TLS inspection leaves policy unenforced. Confirm the improvement by showing that certificate tests establish the intended terminating component and protected payload.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Establish supported Site-to-Site VPN over Direct Connect or end-to-end application encryption would address a different scenario, such as when a financial firm uses Direct Connect for regulated traffic but needs cryptographic protection while crossing the private circuit. The present issue requires choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Use HTTPS target groups with valid backend certificates or another approved protected backend hop would address a different scenario, such as when an application accepts HTTPS from users but forwards plaintext credentials from the ALB to EC2 targets. The present issue requires choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Require HTTPS-only origin protocol policy and validate origin TLS identity would address a different scenario, such as when a public website terminates HTTPS at CloudFront but uses HTTP to fetch sensitive dynamic data from its origin. The present issue requires choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 737
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: An internal endpoint for S3 must permit only a specified business bucket although a subnet route to the service is present. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate
Place the relevant HTTP path restrictions in a WAF web ACL on the public entry point
Use a least-privilege stateful security group with the exact required source and port
Configure suitable WAF geography conditions with carefully scoped allow and exception logic
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because endpoint transport and AWS resource authorization are separate layers. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that a private S3 gateway route alone does not prevent access to every otherwise allowed bucket. Confirm the improvement by showing that permitted bucket operations succeed and excluded bucket calls fail authorization.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Place the relevant HTTP path restrictions in a WAF web ACL on the public entry point would address a different scenario, such as when a regional edge application needs a custom allowlist for administrative URLs but the rule is attached only to an internal firewall. The present issue requires configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use a least-privilege stateful security group with the exact required source and port would address a different scenario, such as when an EC2-based application needs inbound HTTPS from a trusted proxy but no public SSH connections. The present issue requires configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Configure suitable WAF geography conditions with carefully scoped allow and exception logic would address a different scenario, such as when a production ALB must accept only approved client geographies under documented policy while retaining measured business exceptions. The present issue requires configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 738
Following remediation of "A company set up a gateway endpoint for S3 but forgot to associate it with the subnet's route table", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy
Subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency
A test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress
The correct target attachment appears in the evaluated route path for both directions
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency. This directly tests whether the selected change, associate the S3 gateway endpoint with the required VPC route tables and policies, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that gateway endpoints use route table prefix-list entries for supported regional AWS services. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that creating an endpoint in a VPC does not automatically update unrelated route tables.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy might confirm another remediation, for instance when a VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets. This question instead requires demonstrating that subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress might confirm another remediation, for instance when a spoke VPC with a default route to Transit Gateway cannot reach the internet through central NAT because the egress VPC lacks the return path. This question instead requires demonstrating that subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
The correct target attachment appears in the evaluated route path for both directions might confirm another remediation, for instance when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. This question instead requires demonstrating that subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 739
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A migration moves a customer gateway to a new public IP address but the Site-to-Site VPN attachment still references the old address. Which outcome is the principal concern?
A public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment
Changing AWS security group rules does not repair a router-level ASN mismatch
Updating a DNS alias cannot automatically change a fixed customer gateway peer address
A standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Updating a DNS alias cannot automatically change a fixed customer gateway peer address. The missing control matters because vPN tunnel peers must reference the actual reachable on-premises public endpoint. The appropriate corrective action is to update the customer gateway configuration and recreate or modify supported VPN resources as required. To check the outcome, verify that the new gateway public endpoint establishes both tunnels and the old one is retired.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment can be a real consequence when a data center connects to a shared Transit Gateway through a Direct Connect gateway and the route table lacks the VPC destination. Here the relevant failure is that updating a DNS alias cannot automatically change a fixed customer gateway peer address. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Changing AWS security group rules does not repair a router-level ASN mismatch can be a real consequence when an on-premises site sends traffic to AWS over VPN but the customer router rejects expected BGP adjacency. Here the relevant failure is that updating a DNS alias cannot automatically change a fixed customer gateway peer address. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure can be a real consequence when the Direct Connect physical port is down but the application must automatically use an existing backup VPN. Here the relevant failure is that updating a DNS alias cannot automatically change a fixed customer gateway peer address. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 740
A team faces this situation: A company needs public AWS service API access across a Direct Connect public VIF but has not advertised eligible public prefixes. It proposes: Configure appropriate public BGP advertisements and verify allowed public service routing. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
Successful hybrid communication requires both directions to have usable routes and compatible filters
Static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes
A Direct Connect LAG aggregates eligible physical connections with defined compatibility rules
Public VIF reachability has its own route advertisement requirements separate from VPC private routing
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Public VIF reachability has its own route advertisement requirements separate from VPC private routing. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, configure appropriate public BGP advertisements and verify allowed public service routing, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, an established public BGP session with missing public routes can still leave endpoints unreachable. A suitable verification is that approved public endpoint traffic follows the expected Direct Connect public routing path.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Successful hybrid communication requires both directions to have usable routes and compatible filters explains a different case, for example when a remote branch cannot reach AWS because its advertised VPC return prefix is absent from the corporate router. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that public VIF reachability has its own route advertisement requirements separate from VPC private routing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes explains a different case, for example when a customer VPN uses static routing while the team expects automatic failover after network changes. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that public VIF reachability has its own route advertisement requirements separate from VPC private routing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
A Direct Connect LAG aggregates eligible physical connections with defined compatibility rules explains a different case, for example when a network team builds a link aggregation group with circuits of incompatible speed or port location. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that public VIF reachability has its own route advertisement requirements separate from VPC private routing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.

We don't say that these free VCEs sent by our members aren't reliable (experience shows that they are). But you should use your critical thinking as to what you download and memorize.
