Question 720
A team faces this situation: A company wants security appliances in one inspection VPC but discovers spoke traffic can bypass the appliance. It proposes: Use Transit Gateway route tables and symmetric inspection routing with appliance-mode considerations. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
CIDR overlap creates routing ambiguity and limits full-mesh private connectivity
Peering provides direct private connectivity but no automatic transitive routing
Centralized inspection requires deliberate forward-and-return routing through the same stateful middlebox path
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Centralized inspection requires deliberate forward-and-return routing through the same stateful middlebox path. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use Transit Gateway route tables and symmetric inspection routing with appliance-mode considerations, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, attaching a firewall VPC alone does not force other attachments to traverse it. A suitable verification is that forward and return flow traces pass the firewall and remain symmetric.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Transit Gateway peering supports private cross-region connectivity with explicit route table configuration explains a different case, for example when a multi-region service requires selected cross-region VPC connectivity without moving packets over ordinary public internet routes. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that centralized inspection requires deliberate forward-and-return routing through the same stateful middlebox path; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
CIDR overlap creates routing ambiguity and limits full-mesh private connectivity explains a different case, for example when a network architecture team cannot summarize cloud address blocks because business units allocated overlapping private ranges. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that centralized inspection requires deliberate forward-and-return routing through the same stateful middlebox path; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Peering provides direct private connectivity but no automatic transitive routing explains a different case, for example when two VPCs in one Region need a simple low-cost direct connection with nonoverlapping CIDR blocks. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that centralized inspection requires deliberate forward-and-return routing through the same stateful middlebox path; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 721
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: Two accounts need to expose a service but organization policy forbids consumer access to provider route tables. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions
Use routed egress VPC design with appropriate Transit Gateway attachment and NAT/firewall architecture
Redesign using explicit A-to-C peering or a suitable Transit Gateway transit architecture
Combine service-specific PrivateLink endpoints with controlled DNS records and endpoint policies
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because privateLink separates provider service publishing from consumer network route administration. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that sharing the provider account's full route table is not needed for one selected service. Confirm the improvement by showing that only accepted principals connect to the endpoint service and other networks remain isolated.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Use routed egress VPC design with appropriate Transit Gateway attachment and NAT/firewall architecture would address a different scenario, such as when a large AWS organization needs egress through centralized networking while preserving per-spoke isolation. The present issue requires use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Redesign using explicit A-to-C peering or a suitable Transit Gateway transit architecture would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants three VPCs connected through VPC peering and expects traffic from A to reach C by traversing B. The present issue requires use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Combine service-specific PrivateLink endpoints with controlled DNS records and endpoint policies would address a different scenario, such as when an enterprise tries to make private endpoints in many accounts resolve consistently while preserving independent service accounts. The present issue requires use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 722
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—A team deletes old security groups using a cron job but removes groups still referenced by ENIs—which action should the engineer take?
Use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism
Query dependencies and perform bounded safe cleanup with approvals and dry runs
Grant scoped IAM roles and tightly limit its approved service operations
Create IaC validation or guardrails that reject routes outside the approved CIDR policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Query dependencies and perform bounded safe cleanup with approvals and dry runs. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because network automation must reconcile reference dependencies before destructive actions. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that deleting security resources without checking active use can interrupt legitimate connections. Confirm the improvement by showing that a dry run reports active dependencies and deletes only unused approved groups.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism would address a different scenario, such as when a central engineering team deploys identical network stacks into many AWS accounts and Regions. The present issue requires query dependencies and perform bounded safe cleanup with approvals and dry runs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Grant scoped IAM roles and tightly limit its approved service operations would address a different scenario, such as when a deployment job has broad administrator rights just to create one VPC endpoint and associated route entries. The present issue requires query dependencies and perform bounded safe cleanup with approvals and dry runs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Create IaC validation or guardrails that reject routes outside the approved CIDR policy would address a different scenario, such as when a team wants a new VPC module to expose only approved prefixes rather than permitting default routes to any peer. The present issue requires query dependencies and perform bounded safe cleanup with approvals and dry runs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 723
AWS architects plan to Use ACM Private CA or a governed private certificate authority with lifecycle automation for this requirement: A company wants central certificate issuance for internal application identities across private VPCs. Which principle is MOST relevant?
TLS termination on the front-end listener does not automatically encrypt ALB-to-target traffic
TLS server identity verification depends on hostname matches in presented certificate identities
Private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain
Trusting the remote database identity is distinct from simply encrypting connection bytes
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use ACM Private CA or a governed private certificate authority with lifecycle automation, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a publicly trusted certificate authority is not a substitute for managing private trust needs. A suitable verification is that internal clients validate the expected CA chain and certificate renewal completes.
Incorrect Answers
A:
TLS termination on the front-end listener does not automatically encrypt ALB-to-target traffic explains a different case, for example when an application accepts HTTPS from users but forwards plaintext credentials from the ALB to EC2 targets. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
TLS server identity verification depends on hostname matches in presented certificate identities explains a different case, for example when a public API rotates keys but clients fail after a new wildcard certificate omits a particular hostname. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Trusting the remote database identity is distinct from simply encrypting connection bytes explains a different case, for example when a company uses encrypted RDS connections but EC2 applications do not validate the RDS server certificate. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 724
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A central engineering team deploys identical network stacks into many AWS accounts and Regions. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Use reusable CloudFormation modules or CDK constructs with versioned security parameters
Implement a scoped EventBridge rule and Lambda remediation with reviewable rollback
Replace hardcoded environment identifiers with parameters, discovery and account-scoped outputs
Use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because organization-scale infrastructure delivery needs account and Region targeting with coordinated drift handling. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that running one script with a hardcoded account credential increases operational and audit risk. Confirm the improvement by showing that target accounts receive intended resource versions and exceptions are visible.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use reusable CloudFormation modules or CDK constructs with versioned security parameters would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants a standard encrypted hybrid network across Regions but each stack manually selects a different VPN policy. The present issue requires use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Implement a scoped EventBridge rule and Lambda remediation with reviewable rollback would address a different scenario, such as when an application subnet must be isolated automatically whenever a security event tags it as compromised. The present issue requires use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Replace hardcoded environment identifiers with parameters, discovery and account-scoped outputs would address a different scenario, such as when a multi-account transit network uses fixed VPC IDs in scripts and deployment to new accounts fails. The present issue requires use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 725
A network review finds: A new on-premises BIND server is allowed to send queries to Route 53 Resolver inbound endpoint over UDP but TCP responses time out. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
UDP-only validation can hide failures for truncated or large answers
An overly broad rule can send normal internet DNS queries to a corporate resolver that cannot answer
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching
A centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
UDP-only validation can hide failures for truncated or large answers. The missing control matters because dNS can use TCP for larger responses or retry scenarios as well as UDP. The appropriate corrective action is to permit the required DNS UDP and TCP paths, including large-response fallbacks. To check the outcome, verify that large and ordinary DNS queries return successfully from the approved corporate resolver.
Incorrect Answers
B:
An overly broad rule can send normal internet DNS queries to a corporate resolver that cannot answer can be a real consequence when an EC2 instance needs corporate DNS resolution but a broad forwarding rule also intercepts public domain lookups. Here the relevant failure is that uDP-only validation can hide failures for truncated or large answers. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching can be a real consequence when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. Here the relevant failure is that uDP-only validation can hide failures for truncated or large answers. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs can be a real consequence when two AWS accounts require shared private DNS resolution but the forwarding rule is only present in the networking account. Here the relevant failure is that uDP-only validation can hide failures for truncated or large answers. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 726
Following remediation of "A public API rotates keys but clients fail after a new wildcard certificate omits a particular hostname", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Validating resolvers accept correct child answers and reject forged signatures
Tests succeed for intended hostnames and mismatched names correctly fail
Tampered answers are rejected and confidentiality tests separately validate the chosen transport
Packet inspection shows encrypted application traffic at the backend hop
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Tests succeed for intended hostnames and mismatched names correctly fail. This directly tests whether the selected change, issue and bind certificates whose subject alternative names cover the actual service names, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that tLS server identity verification depends on hostname matches in presented certificate identities. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a certificate with valid CA signature but wrong hostnames will still be rejected.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Validating resolvers accept correct child answers and reject forged signatures might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network team requires DNSSEC verification across a delegated child zone but its validating clients report bogus answers. This question instead requires demonstrating that tests succeed for intended hostnames and mismatched names correctly fail. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Tampered answers are rejected and confidentiality tests separately validate the chosen transport might confirm another remediation, for instance when a security team enables Route 53 DNSSEC signing and claims it will hide which domains users query. This question instead requires demonstrating that tests succeed for intended hostnames and mismatched names correctly fail. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Packet inspection shows encrypted application traffic at the backend hop might confirm another remediation, for instance when an application accepts HTTPS from users but forwards plaintext credentials from the ALB to EC2 targets. This question instead requires demonstrating that tests succeed for intended hostnames and mismatched names correctly fail. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 727
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: A company routes every VPC pair through Transit Gateway despite needing only one low-volume peer relationship. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Combine performance-based DNS routing with application-relevant health evaluation
Enable appropriate healthy targets, subnet capacity and relevant cross-zone options
Compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs
Select the appropriate hosted or dedicated Direct Connect capacity and redundancy based on measured demand
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because appropriate connectivity patterns balance operational simplicity against transit processing charges. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that adding Transit Gateway for every pair can increase cost without providing needed transit functions. Confirm the improvement by showing that a cost model shows the simpler peering path meets both traffic and governance requirements.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Combine performance-based DNS routing with application-relevant health evaluation would address a different scenario, such as when a company has clients across Regions but its Route 53 routing policy always selects the closest region even when that region's app is down. The present issue requires compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Enable appropriate healthy targets, subnet capacity and relevant cross-zone options would address a different scenario, such as when a multi-AZ application has outages because its load balancer still sends traffic to an empty target group in one zone. The present issue requires compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Select the appropriate hosted or dedicated Direct Connect capacity and redundancy based on measured demand would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises network sends small transactions over dedicated connectivity but a plan proposes a high-capacity redundant DX LAG. The present issue requires compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 728
The team addressed this problem: A private subnet must reject a prohibited IP address at its boundary even when security groups allow other application traffic. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
Approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress
Negative packets are dropped and a corresponding firewall alert is retained
Negative traffic is denied by the chosen supported control while valid flows continue
A negative source test is denied and permitted response traffic still works
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
A negative source test is denied and permitted response traffic still works. This directly tests whether the selected change, implement carefully ordered stateless network ACL deny and allow rules, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that nACLs evaluate numbered stateless subnet rules and require explicit response-direction allowances. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a security group does not provide explicit deny entries for the prohibited address.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress might confirm another remediation, for instance when an organization needs central domain and IP reputation filtering for outbound workloads in many AWS accounts. This question instead requires demonstrating that a negative source test is denied and permitted response traffic still works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Negative packets are dropped and a corresponding firewall alert is retained might confirm another remediation, for instance when a finance environment uses AWS Network Firewall but the rule group is set to log-only while policy requires blocking. This question instead requires demonstrating that a negative source test is denied and permitted response traffic still works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Negative traffic is denied by the chosen supported control while valid flows continue might confirm another remediation, for instance when a developer says a security group deny rule should override an earlier allow but SG rules have no explicit deny action. This question instead requires demonstrating that a negative source test is denied and permitted response traffic still works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 729
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A network pipeline requires assurance that a proposed security group modification will not break known dependencies. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Run IaC change previews plus reachability tests against critical packet paths
Wait for appropriate API resource states and dependency readiness in orchestration
Use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism
Implement a scoped EventBridge rule and Lambda remediation with reviewable rollback
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Run IaC change previews plus reachability tests against critical packet paths. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because change plans and reachability analysis provide complementary evidence before applying routes and rules. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that a syntactically valid template does not guarantee the desired application packet path. Confirm the improvement by showing that a denied path change is caught in preview or pre-production reachability validation.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Wait for appropriate API resource states and dependency readiness in orchestration would address a different scenario, such as when an infrastructure pipeline creates an interface VPC endpoint then outputs the endpoint ID before it is available. The present issue requires run IaC change previews plus reachability tests against critical packet paths because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism would address a different scenario, such as when a central engineering team deploys identical network stacks into many AWS accounts and Regions. The present issue requires run IaC change previews plus reachability tests against critical packet paths because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Implement a scoped EventBridge rule and Lambda remediation with reviewable rollback would address a different scenario, such as when an application subnet must be isolated automatically whenever a security event tags it as compromised. The present issue requires run IaC change previews plus reachability tests against critical packet paths because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 730
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—A company retires a public NAT egress path but monitoring shows applications still using it—which action should the engineer take?
Split gateway responsibility across independent devices and test route withdrawal
Map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop
Reconcile endpoint-service permissions, acceptance state, and private DNS configuration
Compare advertised and accepted prefixes and restore the intended route policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because egress architecture changes are enforced by subnet routing, not only NAT resource inventory. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that deleting a NAT gateway before moving default routes can interrupt workloads. Confirm the improvement by showing that source-path traces and billed transfer show traffic on the intended new exit path.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Split gateway responsibility across independent devices and test route withdrawal would address a different scenario, such as when a customer configures redundant links but a single customer gateway remains the only advertised next hop. The present issue requires map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Reconcile endpoint-service permissions, acceptance state, and private DNS configuration would address a different scenario, such as when a service needs a private cross-account endpoint but a deployment removed its consumer endpoint acceptance. The present issue requires map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Compare advertised and accepted prefixes and restore the intended route policy would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises application loses access to a VPC after a BGP policy change on the customer Direct Connect router. The present issue requires map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
