Question 510
Following remediation of "An EKS platform needs Kubernetes Ingress-driven creation of an ALB across cluster namespaces", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Measured proportions match the intended rollout and rollback restores the stable target group
An approved Ingress change creates the intended listener and target group consistently
Packet and certificate tests show the designated hop performs the required authentication
A target outage in one zone still allows validated traffic through healthy zones
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
An approved Ingress change creates the intended listener and target group consistently. This directly tests whether the selected change, use AWS Load Balancer Controller with supported Ingress and IAM permissions, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that the AWS Load Balancer Controller reconciles appropriate Kubernetes objects into AWS load balancer resources. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that manually editing generated ALB listeners outside the controller may be overwritten.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Measured proportions match the intended rollout and rollback restores the stable target group might confirm another remediation, for instance when a blue-green API deployment needs weighted HTTP routing to two target groups for a controlled release. This question instead requires demonstrating that an approved Ingress change creates the intended listener and target group consistently. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Packet and certificate tests show the designated hop performs the required authentication might confirm another remediation, for instance when a service must authenticate incoming HTTPS clients at a proxy without terminating encryption at the wrong tier. This question instead requires demonstrating that an approved Ingress change creates the intended listener and target group consistently. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
A target outage in one zone still allows validated traffic through healthy zones might confirm another remediation, for instance when a multi-AZ target group shows one AZ unavailable when all targets there become unhealthy. This question instead requires demonstrating that an approved Ingress change creates the intended listener and target group consistently. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 511
AWS architects plan to Make forward and return Transit Gateway and VPC routes symmetric around stateful inspection for this requirement: An EKS application connects to a private database through Transit Gateway but replies take a different uninspected route. Which principle is MOST relevant?
Gateway endpoints use route table prefix-list entries for supported regional AWS services
VPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions
Stateful appliances depend on observing both directions of the same flow
PrivateLink service permissions and acceptance policy are separate from network reachability
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Stateful appliances depend on observing both directions of the same flow. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, make forward and return Transit Gateway and VPC routes symmetric around stateful inspection, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets. A suitable verification is that bidirectional trace shows the same inspection path for allowed database connections.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Gateway endpoints use route table prefix-list entries for supported regional AWS services explains a different case, for example when a company set up a gateway endpoint for S3 but forgot to associate it with the subnet's route table. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that stateful appliances depend on observing both directions of the same flow; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
VPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions explains a different case, for example when a VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that stateful appliances depend on observing both directions of the same flow; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
PrivateLink service permissions and acceptance policy are separate from network reachability explains a different case, for example when a provider account restricts PrivateLink endpoint-service connections but a new consumer account still cannot connect. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that stateful appliances depend on observing both directions of the same flow; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 512
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A site VPN fails at regular intervals due to expired or incompatible Internet Key Exchange settings. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection
Reconcile endpoint-service permissions, acceptance state, and private DNS configuration
Update hybrid route advertisements and central gateway route tables for the new Region
Review supported IKE/IPsec parameters, rekey policy and peer configuration
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Review supported IKE/IPsec parameters, rekey policy and peer configuration. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because cryptographic security association lifetimes and compatible algorithms affect tunnel stability. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that adding another application subnet will not repair repeated tunnel negotiation failures. Confirm the improvement by showing that tunnel renegotiation succeeds across the expected maintenance and rekey intervals.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection would address a different scenario, such as when a network engineer uses a summarised /16 route while one /24 subnet requires explicit inspection through another attachment. The present issue requires review supported IKE/IPsec parameters, rekey policy and peer configuration because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Reconcile endpoint-service permissions, acceptance state, and private DNS configuration would address a different scenario, such as when a service needs a private cross-account endpoint but a deployment removed its consumer endpoint acceptance. The present issue requires review supported IKE/IPsec parameters, rekey policy and peer configuration because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Update hybrid route advertisements and central gateway route tables for the new Region would address a different scenario, such as when a company adds a second regional Transit Gateway but leaves old branch route filters active. The present issue requires review supported IKE/IPsec parameters, rekey policy and peer configuration because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 513
An engineer selects the change "Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes" because A VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
IPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access
Gateway route-table association and propagation provide coarse network segmentation across attachments
PrivateLink service permissions and acceptance policy are separate from network reachability
Transit Gateway attachments and route tables control forwarding independently of attachment health
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
IPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, an egress-only internet gateway does not translate IPv6 clients into IPv4 destinations. A suitable verification is that an IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Gateway route-table association and propagation provide coarse network segmentation across attachments explains a different case, for example when a shared Transit Gateway route table receives propagated spokes but a sensitive subnet must never see the audit VPC. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that iPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
PrivateLink service permissions and acceptance policy are separate from network reachability explains a different case, for example when a provider account restricts PrivateLink endpoint-service connections but a new consumer account still cannot connect. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that iPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Transit Gateway attachments and route tables control forwarding independently of attachment health explains a different case, for example when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that iPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 514
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—An application uses an ALB with HTTPS listeners but must ensure encryption continues to backend instances—which action should the engineer take?
Use AWS Load Balancer Controller with supported Ingress and IAM permissions
Configure an HTTPS target group or suitable end-to-end TLS integration
Select compatible load balancer TLS termination or passthrough and certificate-validation placement
Configure supported ALB forward-action weights with health and rollback monitoring
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Configure an HTTPS target group or suitable end-to-end TLS integration. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because tLS termination at a load balancer does not automatically encrypt every backend hop. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that assuming frontend HTTPS protects a plaintext backend leg can violate compliance. Confirm the improvement by showing that backend packet capture confirms expected protected TLS traffic.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use AWS Load Balancer Controller with supported Ingress and IAM permissions would address a different scenario, such as when an EKS platform needs Kubernetes Ingress-driven creation of an ALB across cluster namespaces. The present issue requires configure an HTTPS target group or suitable end-to-end TLS integration because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Select compatible load balancer TLS termination or passthrough and certificate-validation placement would address a different scenario, such as when a service must authenticate incoming HTTPS clients at a proxy without terminating encryption at the wrong tier. The present issue requires configure an HTTPS target group or suitable end-to-end TLS integration because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Configure supported ALB forward-action weights with health and rollback monitoring would address a different scenario, such as when a blue-green API deployment needs weighted HTTP routing to two target groups for a controlled release. The present issue requires configure an HTTPS target group or suitable end-to-end TLS integration because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 515
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: A network engineer uses a summarised /16 route while one /24 subnet requires explicit inspection through another attachment. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Review prefix specificity, path policy and approved route advertisements
Compare advertised and accepted prefixes and restore the intended route policy
Install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection
Inspect endpoint and identity or resource policy evaluation for the specific API action
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because longest-prefix selection allows deliberate exception routing when supported and governed. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that one blanket summary can bypass a more-specific security path if exceptions are absent. Confirm the improvement by showing that the regulated /24 takes the intended inspection route while ordinary addresses use the summary.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Review prefix specificity, path policy and approved route advertisements would address a different scenario, such as when a VPN route from a customer site suddenly loses preference to a newly advertised overlapping longer prefix. The present issue requires install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Compare advertised and accepted prefixes and restore the intended route policy would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises application loses access to a VPC after a BGP policy change on the customer Direct Connect router. The present issue requires install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Inspect endpoint and identity or resource policy evaluation for the specific API action would address a different scenario, such as when an organization uses VPC endpoints for private S3 access but an endpoint policy now rejects a required object operation. The present issue requires install and verify a more-specific route directing the regulated subnet to inspection because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 516
A team faces this situation: An internal endpoint for S3 must permit only a specified business bucket although a subnet route to the service is present. It proposes: Configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
Egress inspection applies filtering only to traffic intentionally routed through the control
Network governance must respect the resource-owning account and supported cross-account references
Stateful outbound SG permissions define which new connections a workload can initiate
Endpoint transport and AWS resource authorization are separate layers
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Endpoint transport and AWS resource authorization are separate layers. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a private S3 gateway route alone does not prevent access to every otherwise allowed bucket. A suitable verification is that permitted bucket operations succeed and excluded bucket calls fail authorization.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Egress inspection applies filtering only to traffic intentionally routed through the control explains a different case, for example when an organization needs central domain and IP reputation filtering for outbound workloads in many AWS accounts. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that endpoint transport and AWS resource authorization are separate layers; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Network governance must respect the resource-owning account and supported cross-account references explains a different case, for example when an enterprise wants to apply security group rules across accounts but forgets that shared-VPC resources are owned by participants. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that endpoint transport and AWS resource authorization are separate layers; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Stateful outbound SG permissions define which new connections a workload can initiate explains a different case, for example when an audit finds highly permissive outbound SG rules on EC2 instances holding sensitive financial data. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that endpoint transport and AWS resource authorization are separate layers; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 517
A network review finds: A security team enables Route 53 DNSSEC signing and claims it will hide which domains users query. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
Treating authenticated DNS data as secret can expose query metadata to observers
Leaving deprecated suites enabled may violate governance even if the tunnel stays up
Assuming Direct Connect inherently encrypts payloads can violate confidentiality requirements
A secure VPN between networks does not protect users from insecure application redirects
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Treating authenticated DNS data as secret can expose query metadata to observers. The missing control matters because dNSSEC signs DNS responses but does not encrypt ordinary resolver requests. The appropriate corrective action is to clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported. To check the outcome, verify that tampered answers are rejected and confidentiality tests separately validate the chosen transport.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Leaving deprecated suites enabled may violate governance even if the tunnel stays up can be a real consequence when a Site-to-Site VPN has an old cipher suite that is no longer permitted under corporate cryptographic policy. Here the relevant failure is that treating authenticated DNS data as secret can expose query metadata to observers. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Assuming Direct Connect inherently encrypts payloads can violate confidentiality requirements can be a real consequence when a financial firm uses Direct Connect for regulated traffic but needs cryptographic protection while crossing the private circuit. Here the relevant failure is that treating authenticated DNS data as secret can expose query metadata to observers. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A secure VPN between networks does not protect users from insecure application redirects can be a real consequence when a customer VPN carries application traffic securely but an application returns sensitive session tokens through an unauthenticated HTTP redirect. Here the relevant failure is that treating authenticated DNS data as secret can expose query metadata to observers. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 518
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: An application gets uneven cross-zone target usage after load balancer cross-zone settings were changed?
Overprovisioning LAG capacity can add fixed cost without meaningful performance improvement
Assuming cross-zone traffic is free for every load balancer type can distort budgets
Assuming standard VPC peering automatically relays all multicast groups will fail
Adding an extra DNS name cannot substitute for healthy target capacity
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Assuming cross-zone traffic is free for every load balancer type can distort budgets. The missing control matters because load balancer routing options can alter zonal distribution and cost characteristics. The appropriate corrective action is to assess cross-zone behavior, zonal target health and any associated data-transfer charges. To check the outcome, verify that target distribution and measured cost match the approved zone-routing design.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Overprovisioning LAG capacity can add fixed cost without meaningful performance improvement can be a real consequence when an on-premises network sends small transactions over dedicated connectivity but a plan proposes a high-capacity redundant DX LAG. Here the relevant failure is that assuming cross-zone traffic is free for every load balancer type can distort budgets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Assuming standard VPC peering automatically relays all multicast groups will fail can be a real consequence when a company wants to receive multicast from on premises into AWS applications but its current peering design lacks required support. Here the relevant failure is that assuming cross-zone traffic is free for every load balancer type can distort budgets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Adding an extra DNS name cannot substitute for healthy target capacity can be a real consequence when a multi-AZ application has outages because its load balancer still sends traffic to an empty target group in one zone. Here the relevant failure is that assuming cross-zone traffic is free for every load balancer type can distort budgets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 519
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: A company routes all outbound traffic through a transparent proxy but direct routes to the NAT gateway remain available. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Place databases in private subnets and restrict security group sources to the application tier
Require approved RAM principals and Transit Gateway attachment acceptance or controlled network policy
Close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design
Implement carefully ordered stateless network ACL deny and allow rules
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because centralized egress filtering is effective only when alternative unfiltered exits are removed. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that a transparent proxy alone cannot enforce policy against traffic that never traverses it. Confirm the improvement by showing that an attempt to use the bypass next hop fails while approved proxy traffic works.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Place databases in private subnets and restrict security group sources to the application tier would address a different scenario, such as when a multi-tenant application has public load balancers but database instances should never accept internet connections. The present issue requires close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Require approved RAM principals and Transit Gateway attachment acceptance or controlled network policy would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants to prevent untrusted VPCs from attaching to a central Transit Gateway automatically. The present issue requires close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Implement carefully ordered stateless network ACL deny and allow rules would address a different scenario, such as when a private subnet must reject a prohibited IP address at its boundary even when security groups allow other application traffic. The present issue requires close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 520
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A company runs a split-horizon domain in public and private hosted zones and finds internal users seeing the wrong record. What is the MOST direct risk?
A public hosted zone query log is not necessarily a substitute for internal resolver request logs
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching
Recreating unrelated EC2 instances will not repair a missing DNS rule association
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The missing control matters because private-zone matching can override public DNS for associated VPCs. The appropriate corrective action is to verify private hosted zone VPC associations, record presence and resolver precedence. To check the outcome, verify that internal test clients receive intended private answers while external clients receive public answers.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A public hosted zone query log is not necessarily a substitute for internal resolver request logs can be a real consequence when an enterprise must trace which VPC originated suspicious DNS lookups without full packet capture. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching can be a real consequence when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Recreating unrelated EC2 instances will not repair a missing DNS rule association can be a real consequence when a DNS outage affects only a few VPCs after centralized forwarding rule changes. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
