AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 53
Question 520
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A company runs a split-horizon domain in public and private hosted zones and finds internal users seeing the wrong record. What is the MOST direct risk?
A public hosted zone query log is not necessarily a substitute for internal resolver request logs
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching
Recreating unrelated EC2 instances will not repair a missing DNS rule association
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The missing control matters because private-zone matching can override public DNS for associated VPCs. The appropriate corrective action is to verify private hosted zone VPC associations, record presence and resolver precedence. To check the outcome, verify that internal test clients receive intended private answers while external clients receive public answers.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A public hosted zone query log is not necessarily a substitute for internal resolver request logs can be a real consequence when an enterprise must trace which VPC originated suspicious DNS lookups without full packet capture. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching can be a real consequence when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Recreating unrelated EC2 instances will not repair a missing DNS rule association can be a real consequence when a DNS outage affects only a few VPCs after centralized forwarding rule changes. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 521
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A migration moves a customer gateway to a new public IP address but the Site-to-Site VPN attachment still references the old address. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Update the customer gateway configuration and recreate or modify supported VPN resources as required
Use supported homogeneous Direct Connect LAG members at the same location and compatible settings
Correct customer BGP withdrawal and route convergence across alternative gateways
Configure appropriate public BGP advertisements and verify allowed public service routing
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Update the customer gateway configuration and recreate or modify supported VPN resources as required. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because vPN tunnel peers must reference the actual reachable on-premises public endpoint. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that updating a DNS alias cannot automatically change a fixed customer gateway peer address. Confirm the improvement by showing that the new gateway public endpoint establishes both tunnels and the old one is retired.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Use supported homogeneous Direct Connect LAG members at the same location and compatible settings would address a different scenario, such as when a network team builds a link aggregation group with circuits of incompatible speed or port location. The present issue requires update the customer gateway configuration and recreate or modify supported VPN resources as required because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Correct customer BGP withdrawal and route convergence across alternative gateways would address a different scenario, such as when a disaster recovery exercise shows VPN routes remain pinned to a removed data center after an appliance failure. The present issue requires update the customer gateway configuration and recreate or modify supported VPN resources as required because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Configure appropriate public BGP advertisements and verify allowed public service routing would address a different scenario, such as when a company needs public AWS service API access across a Direct Connect public VIF but has not advertised eligible public prefixes. The present issue requires update the customer gateway configuration and recreate or modify supported VPN resources as required because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 522
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—A VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured—which action should the engineer take?
Add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region
Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies
Add the intended principal to the endpoint service allow list and approve pending connections as required
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because iPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that an egress-only internet gateway does not translate IPv6 clients into IPv4 destinations. Confirm the improvement by showing that an IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Add static peering attachment routes in appropriate Transit Gateway tables for each region would address a different scenario, such as when a multi-region application requires inter-Region Transit Gateway peering but regional routes were not installed. The present issue requires use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies would address a different scenario, such as when a team wants to restrict S3 access through a gateway endpoint to specific buckets. The present issue requires use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Add the intended principal to the endpoint service allow list and approve pending connections as required would address a different scenario, such as when a provider account restricts PrivateLink endpoint-service connections but a new consumer account still cannot connect. The present issue requires use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 523
A cloud architect observes the following gap: An internal API is exposed by PrivateLink but consumers resolve its hostname to a public ALB. Which outcome is the principal concern?
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN
A healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API
A private service endpoint without proper DNS can leave clients using unintended public ingress
Changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
A private service endpoint without proper DNS can leave clients using unintended public ingress. The missing control matters because privateLink DNS must map the desired service name to reachable consumer endpoint ENI addresses. The appropriate corrective action is to configure verified interface endpoint private DNS or scoped private-zone alias for the endpoint. To check the outcome, verify that consumer DNS lookups return private endpoint addresses and test calls stay within approved connectivity.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Assuming a public record will answer a missing private-zone name can produce NXDOMAIN can be a real consequence when a company runs a split-horizon domain in public and private hosted zones and finds internal users seeing the wrong record. Here the relevant failure is that a private service endpoint without proper DNS can leave clients using unintended public ingress. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API can be a real consequence when a Route 53 failover record references a health check that tests only the landing page while the API path is broken. Here the relevant failure is that a private service endpoint without proper DNS can leave clients using unintended public ingress. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution can be a real consequence when a public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers. Here the relevant failure is that a private service endpoint without proper DNS can leave clients using unintended public ingress. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 524
The team addressed this problem: A company routes all outbound traffic through a transparent proxy but direct routes to the NAT gateway remain available. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
Unauthorized principals are denied destructive calls even from approved subnets
Negative and positive tests from each AZ traverse their matching firewall endpoint
Unauthorized attachment attempts fail and approved requests require documented acceptance
An attempt to use the bypass next hop fails while approved proxy traffic works
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
An attempt to use the bypass next hop fails while approved proxy traffic works. This directly tests whether the selected change, close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that centralized egress filtering is effective only when alternative unfiltered exits are removed. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a transparent proxy alone cannot enforce policy against traffic that never traverses it.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Unauthorized principals are denied destructive calls even from approved subnets might confirm another remediation, for instance when an internal API uses a private endpoint but allows every company user to invoke destructive service operations. This question instead requires demonstrating that an attempt to use the bypass next hop fails while approved proxy traffic works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Negative and positive tests from each AZ traverse their matching firewall endpoint might confirm another remediation, for instance when a cloud egress inspection design allows application traffic to bypass a Network Firewall route in one availability zone. This question instead requires demonstrating that an attempt to use the bypass next hop fails while approved proxy traffic works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Unauthorized attachment attempts fail and approved requests require documented acceptance might confirm another remediation, for instance when a company wants to prevent untrusted VPCs from attaching to a central Transit Gateway automatically. This question instead requires demonstrating that an attempt to use the bypass next hop fails while approved proxy traffic works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 525
An engineer selects the change "Adopt supported BGP dynamic routing or explicitly maintain correct static failover logic" because A customer VPN uses static routing while the team expects automatic failover after network changes. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes
A successful IKE negotiation is not proof that permitted data-plane flows traverse the tunnel
Gateway attachments and association permissions govern which VPC receives hybrid prefixes
VPN tunnel peers must reference the actual reachable on-premises public endpoint
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, adopt supported BGP dynamic routing or explicitly maintain correct static failover logic, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, assuming static VPN routing detects every remote CIDR change can blackhole traffic. A suitable verification is that new approved AWS prefixes are learned or explicitly installed and test packets reach them.
Incorrect Answers
B:
A successful IKE negotiation is not proof that permitted data-plane flows traverse the tunnel explains a different case, for example when an on-premises firewall permits IPSec negotiation but blocks encapsulated user traffic after tunnel setup. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Gateway attachments and association permissions govern which VPC receives hybrid prefixes explains a different case, for example when a team configured a Direct Connect private VIF but selected the wrong AWS account's virtual private gateway. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
VPN tunnel peers must reference the actual reachable on-premises public endpoint explains a different case, for example when a migration moves a customer gateway to a new public IP address but the Site-to-Site VPN attachment still references the old address. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that static routes do not automatically learn newly announced AWS prefixes; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 526
For the scenario "Two AWS accounts require shared private DNS resolution but the forwarding rule is only present in the networking account", the proposed response is "Share appropriate Resolver rules through RAM and associate them with consuming VPCs". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
Outbound endpoint ENI source IPs need permitted DNS transport to target name servers
Resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution
Central rule definitions do not help VPCs where the association or network path is missing
Public DNS follows delegation chain name-server records rather than the zone console selected by users
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, share appropriate Resolver rules through RAM and associate them with consuming VPCs, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs. A suitable verification is that queries from member VPCs reach the designated corporate DNS servers.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Outbound endpoint ENI source IPs need permitted DNS transport to target name servers explains a different case, for example when an internal domain resolves correctly on the corporate network but fails in a VPC because the DNS server only answers from approved source IPs. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Central rule definitions do not help VPCs where the association or network path is missing explains a different case, for example when a DNS outage affects only a few VPCs after centralized forwarding rule changes. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Public DNS follows delegation chain name-server records rather than the zone console selected by users explains a different case, for example when a public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 527
A cloud architect observes the following gap: An AWS account has no trace of who modified a Route 53 Resolver forwarding rule during a DNS incident. Which outcome is the principal concern?
CloudTrail Route 53 API logs do not enumerate every DNS lookup by an instance
An aggregate blocked-request graph cannot reveal the responsible request rule
Resolver query logging cannot necessarily reveal the administrator who changed rule association
Internet edge logs alone omit privately routed east-west transit between VPCs
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Resolver query logging cannot necessarily reveal the administrator who changed rule association. The missing control matters because resolver rule changes are control-plane management operations distinct from DNS queries. The appropriate corrective action is to inspect or enable CloudTrail coverage for supported Resolver API operations. To check the outcome, verify that the modification appears with actor, API action and request metadata.
Incorrect Answers
A:
CloudTrail Route 53 API logs do not enumerate every DNS lookup by an instance can be a real consequence when a compliance team must audit DNS usage for malicious domains from workloads that use VPC resolver. Here the relevant failure is that resolver query logging cannot necessarily reveal the administrator who changed rule association. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
An aggregate blocked-request graph cannot reveal the responsible request rule can be a real consequence when a WAF web ACL blocks some requests unexpectedly and the team only has total request counts. Here the relevant failure is that resolver query logging cannot necessarily reveal the administrator who changed rule association. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Internet edge logs alone omit privately routed east-west transit between VPCs can be a real consequence when a company audits public ingress but does not inspect internal spoke-to-spoke traffic crossing a Transit Gateway. Here the relevant failure is that resolver query logging cannot necessarily reveal the administrator who changed rule association. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 528
A team faces this situation: A company has clients across Regions but its Route 53 routing policy always selects the closest region even when that region's app is down. It proposes: Combine performance-based DNS routing with application-relevant health evaluation. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
EC2 network throughput ceilings vary by instance family and workload pattern
AWS multicast support is service-specific and needs explicit domain membership design
Route 53 latency routing can use health to avoid unhealthy regional answers
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Route 53 latency routing can use health to avoid unhealthy regional answers. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, combine performance-based DNS routing with application-relevant health evaluation, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, dNS performance routing without effective health can direct users to unavailable applications. A suitable verification is that a regional failure test removes the unhealthy target from eligible DNS answers.
Incorrect Answers
A:
EC2 network throughput ceilings vary by instance family and workload pattern explains a different case, for example when a batch data service saturates one EC2 network path because instances were placed on incompatible network tiers. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that route 53 latency routing can use health to avoid unhealthy regional answers; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Elastic Network Adapter supports higher-performance network I/O on compatible EC2 instances explains a different case, for example when a data-intensive EC2 workload has poor network throughput because its instance family lacks enhanced networking features. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that route 53 latency routing can use health to avoid unhealthy regional answers; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
AWS multicast support is service-specific and needs explicit domain membership design explains a different case, for example when a company wants to receive multicast from on premises into AWS applications but its current peering design lacks required support. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that route 53 latency routing can use health to avoid unhealthy regional answers; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 529
For this networking situation, An application serves large personalized private documents and must prevent one user's cached response reaching another, the team applies "Use private cache behaviors or disable caching for sensitive identity-dependent responses". Which validation is strongest?
Cross-user tests cannot retrieve each other's objects while authorized retrieval succeeds
Backend access logs contain the verified source address for each supported endpoint type
Viewer traces resolve to edge delivery and the origin receives only needed fetches
Repeated eligible responses are served at edges and blocked HTTP requests do not reach origin
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Cross-user tests cannot retrieve each other's objects while authorized retrieval succeeds. This directly tests whether the selected change, use private cache behaviors or disable caching for sensitive identity-dependent responses, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that shared edge caches require cache keys and response policies that respect authorization context. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that caching authenticated content under a shared key can disclose another customer's document.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Backend access logs contain the verified source address for each supported endpoint type might confirm another remediation, for instance when an enterprise must preserve source-client IP for a global TCP service using an accelerator and regional targets. This question instead requires demonstrating that cross-user tests cannot retrieve each other's objects while authorized retrieval succeeds. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Viewer traces resolve to edge delivery and the origin receives only needed fetches might confirm another remediation, for instance when a website requires viewers in distant locations to reach the nearest available HTTP edge with HTTPS termination. This question instead requires demonstrating that cross-user tests cannot retrieve each other's objects while authorized retrieval succeeds. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Repeated eligible responses are served at edges and blocked HTTP requests do not reach origin might confirm another remediation, for instance when a web application needs HTTP edge caching and WAF protection but was placed behind a TCP-only NLB. This question instead requires demonstrating that cross-user tests cannot retrieve each other's objects while authorized retrieval succeeds. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 530
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: A disaster recovery exercise shows VPN routes remain pinned to a removed data center after an appliance failure?
A regional Direct Connect attachment alone does not imply reachability to every distant VPC
Manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes
A single configured tunnel loses the redundancy offered by the service
Restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes. The missing control matters because dynamic routing convergence requires failure detection and withdrawing unusable next hops. The appropriate corrective action is to correct customer BGP withdrawal and route convergence across alternative gateways. To check the outcome, verify that traffic converges to the remaining gateway and the obsolete route disappears.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A regional Direct Connect attachment alone does not imply reachability to every distant VPC can be a real consequence when a hybrid architecture must route between a branch and two AWS Regions while keeping transit resources centrally owned. Here the relevant failure is that manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A single configured tunnel loses the redundancy offered by the service can be a real consequence when an enterprise provisions a VPN but only one of its provided tunnel endpoint configurations is deployed. Here the relevant failure is that manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic can be a real consequence when an on-premises firewall permits IPSec negotiation but blocks encapsulated user traffic after tunnel setup. Here the relevant failure is that manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
