AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 5
Question 40
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A media business has regional data residency rules for viewers and cannot send all users to one origin. What is the MOST direct risk?
An unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints
Publishing a single regional public IP alone may create avoidable geographic latency
A CloudFront distribution alone is not the right generic TCP anycast front door
An edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
An edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction. The missing control matters because geographic access controls and origin selection must align with legal data location requirements. The appropriate corrective action is to use CloudFront geographic restrictions or routing with separately controlled regional origins as policy requires. To check the outcome, verify that a test from restricted locations is denied or reaches a permitted regional origin.
Incorrect Answers
A:
An unmonitored static Route 53 record alone may continue advertising failed endpoints can be a real consequence when a public application has two regional ALBs and wants traffic to fail away from an entire unhealthy application Region. Here the relevant failure is that an edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Publishing a single regional public IP alone may create avoidable geographic latency can be a real consequence when a website requires viewers in distant locations to reach the nearest available HTTP edge with HTTPS termination. Here the relevant failure is that an edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A CloudFront distribution alone is not the right generic TCP anycast front door can be a real consequence when a trading client needs static anycast IP addresses and TCP endpoint failover across Regions. Here the relevant failure is that an edge location alone does not guarantee that an origin stores data in the permitted jurisdiction. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 41
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A security team enables Route 53 DNSSEC signing and claims it will hide which domains users query. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported
Move private keys to secure managed storage and use controlled certificate distribution
Align private service names with valid certificate SANs or approved client naming conventions
Choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because dNSSEC signs DNS responses but does not encrypt ordinary resolver requests. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that treating authenticated DNS data as secret can expose query metadata to observers. Confirm the improvement by showing that tampered answers are rejected and confidentiality tests separately validate the chosen transport.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Move private keys to secure managed storage and use controlled certificate distribution would address a different scenario, such as when an internal service uses mutual TLS but its client certificates are copied into publicly accessible build artifacts. The present issue requires clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Align private service names with valid certificate SANs or approved client naming conventions would address a different scenario, such as when an application uses private DNS for its service but clients fail TLS validation because the certificate contains only the public hostname. The present issue requires clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate would address a different scenario, such as when a custom TCP service requires encrypted transport without exposing keys at the wrong layer. The present issue requires clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 42
For the scenario "An organization needs a private TLS certificate for service-to-service connections and considers embedding the CA private key in a container image", the proposed response is "Issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
A private dedicated circuit is not equivalent to encrypted IPsec or TLS transport
CA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications
DNS naming and certificate identity must match regardless of whether the IP is private
Private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
CA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a leaked signing key could allow attackers to mint trusted internal identities. A suitable verification is that workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A private dedicated circuit is not equivalent to encrypted IPsec or TLS transport explains a different case, for example when a financial firm uses Direct Connect for regulated traffic but needs cryptographic protection while crossing the private circuit. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
DNS naming and certificate identity must match regardless of whether the IP is private explains a different case, for example when an application uses private DNS for its service but clients fail TLS validation because the certificate contains only the public hostname. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Private PKI can issue internally trusted certificates when clients manage the trust chain explains a different case, for example when a company wants central certificate issuance for internal application identities across private VPCs. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 43
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A VPC networking team needs metadata about accepted and rejected connections for an incident baseline. Which outcome is the principal concern?
A successful configuration analysis cannot guarantee application health or external network behavior
Only checking target instance logs may obscure which external spoke originated traffic
Treating flow logs as packet capture will omit payload and application request details
Flow Logs alone cannot show the packet bytes required for this authorized analysis
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Treating flow logs as packet capture will omit payload and application request details. The missing control matters because vPC Flow Logs capture flow metadata rather than full application payloads. The appropriate corrective action is to enable VPC Flow Logs at the required VPC, subnet, or ENI scope and protected destination. To check the outcome, verify that records show source, destination, ports, action, and expected time ranges.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A successful configuration analysis cannot guarantee application health or external network behavior can be a real consequence when a network engineer wants automated proof that a security group and route table permit an intended VPC path. Here the relevant failure is that treating flow logs as packet capture will omit payload and application request details. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Only checking target instance logs may obscure which external spoke originated traffic can be a real consequence when a shared-services VPC receives unexpected traffic and must correlate which transit attachment it came from. Here the relevant failure is that treating flow logs as packet capture will omit payload and application request details. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Flow Logs alone cannot show the packet bytes required for this authorized analysis can be a real consequence when a security analyst must inspect packet payload characteristics from supported EC2 network interfaces in a lab. Here the relevant failure is that treating flow logs as packet capture will omit payload and application request details. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 44
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A public zone uses DNSSEC but the registrar does not publish the required DS record. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Allow the Resolver outbound endpoint source addresses through the corporate DNS firewall
Use Route 53 weighted routing with appropriate policies and health checks
Authorize and associate the application VPC with the private hosted zone
Finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because dNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that enabling signatures without correct delegation may not give validating resolvers the expected trust path. Confirm the improvement by showing that external DNSSEC validation succeeds and tampered data is rejected.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Allow the Resolver outbound endpoint source addresses through the corporate DNS firewall would address a different scenario, such as when an internal domain resolves correctly on the corporate network but fails in a VPC because the DNS server only answers from approved source IPs. The present issue requires finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Use Route 53 weighted routing with appropriate policies and health checks would address a different scenario, such as when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. The present issue requires finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Authorize and associate the application VPC with the private hosted zone would address a different scenario, such as when a private hosted zone resolves from a centralized services VPC but not from a new application VPC. The present issue requires finish the supported DNSSEC delegation of trust in the parent domain because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 45
An engineer selects the change "Choose AWS PrivateLink service exposure with interface endpoints rather than broad routed connectivity" because Two teams have overlapping VPC CIDRs but must consume one narrowly defined service privately. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
PrivateLink can publish selected service endpoints without requiring nonoverlapping full VPC routing
Name resolution and service-level authorization must complement endpoint networking rather than imply full-network trust
AWS RAM enables resource sharing without making the spoke account the transit resource owner
Transit Gateway acts as a transit hub with policy-defined route reachability between VPC attachments
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
PrivateLink can publish selected service endpoints without requiring nonoverlapping full VPC routing. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, choose AWS PrivateLink service exposure with interface endpoints rather than broad routed connectivity, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, vPC peering cannot solve a general overlapping-CIDR routing problem. A suitable verification is that the consumer reaches the specific service without being able to route all provider IP ranges.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Name resolution and service-level authorization must complement endpoint networking rather than imply full-network trust explains a different case, for example when an enterprise tries to make private endpoints in many accounts resolve consistently while preserving independent service accounts. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that privateLink can publish selected service endpoints without requiring nonoverlapping full VPC routing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
AWS RAM enables resource sharing without making the spoke account the transit resource owner explains a different case, for example when a central networking account owns a Transit Gateway, but a workload account cannot attach without approved sharing. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that privateLink can publish selected service endpoints without requiring nonoverlapping full VPC routing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Transit Gateway acts as a transit hub with policy-defined route reachability between VPC attachments explains a different case, for example when a group has dozens of VPCs requiring selective hub-and-spoke reachability rather than hundreds of peering links. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that privateLink can publish selected service endpoints without requiring nonoverlapping full VPC routing; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 46
For the scenario "A network team requires DNSSEC verification across a delegated child zone but its validating clients report bogus answers", the proposed response is "Correct DNSKEY and DS delegation chain and rotate signing keys using supported procedures". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
TLS server identity verification depends on hostname matches in presented certificate identities
DNSSEC authenticity requires a consistent hierarchical chain and valid signing keys
DNS naming and certificate identity must match regardless of whether the IP is private
CA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
DNSSEC authenticity requires a consistent hierarchical chain and valid signing keys. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, correct DNSKEY and DS delegation chain and rotate signing keys using supported procedures, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a mismatch between parent DS and child DNSKEY can make genuine records fail validation. A suitable verification is that validating resolvers accept correct child answers and reject forged signatures.
Incorrect Answers
A:
TLS server identity verification depends on hostname matches in presented certificate identities explains a different case, for example when a public API rotates keys but clients fail after a new wildcard certificate omits a particular hostname. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNSSEC authenticity requires a consistent hierarchical chain and valid signing keys; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
DNS naming and certificate identity must match regardless of whether the IP is private explains a different case, for example when an application uses private DNS for its service but clients fail TLS validation because the certificate contains only the public hostname. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNSSEC authenticity requires a consistent hierarchical chain and valid signing keys; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
CA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications explains a different case, for example when an organization needs a private TLS certificate for service-to-service connections and considers embedding the CA private key in a container image. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNSSEC authenticity requires a consistent hierarchical chain and valid signing keys; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 47
AWS architects plan to Review matching private-zone and Resolver-rule specificity before adding another rule for this requirement: Two private hosted zones share a suffix and a resolver rule has a more-specific matching domain. Which principle is MOST relevant?
Latency-based DNS policies select records by AWS measured network performance and configured health
DNS failover decisions need representative health signals rather than only host reachability
Hybrid DNS routing decisions depend on matching names and rule scope rather than alphabetical order
DNS delegation transfers authority through NS records rather than duplicating every child A record
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Hybrid DNS routing decisions depend on matching names and rule scope rather than alphabetical order. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, review matching private-zone and Resolver-rule specificity before adding another rule, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a broad forwarding rule can intercept names intended for a more-specific private zone. A suitable verification is that queries for each tested suffix resolve through the intended authoritative destination.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Latency-based DNS policies select records by AWS measured network performance and configured health explains a different case, for example when a company wants users routed to the lowest-latency regional application while retaining health checks. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that hybrid DNS routing decisions depend on matching names and rule scope rather than alphabetical order; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
DNS failover decisions need representative health signals rather than only host reachability explains a different case, for example when a public application uses two health-checked DNS targets but its health check probes the wrong path. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that hybrid DNS routing decisions depend on matching names and rule scope rather than alphabetical order; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
DNS delegation transfers authority through NS records rather than duplicating every child A record explains a different case, for example when a parent domain delegates a subdomain to another independently administered public hosted zone. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that hybrid DNS routing decisions depend on matching names and rule scope rather than alphabetical order; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 48
The team addressed this problem: An application uses Gateway Load Balancer appliances but loses flows when return traffic crosses a different inspection appliance. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
New eligible resources receive the expected managed protection under the central policy
The proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH
A test request matching the rule is blocked while ordinary requests reach the target
Paired packet traces show each flow and its response through one intended appliance
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Paired packet traces show each flow and its response through one intended appliance. This directly tests whether the selected change, enable appropriate symmetric routing and compatible appliance mode and endpoint paths, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that stateful middleboxes rely on retaining flow state for both directions. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that asymmetric flows through different appliances can cause valid packets to be dropped.
Incorrect Answers
A:
New eligible resources receive the expected managed protection under the central policy might confirm another remediation, for instance when a company wants standardized AWS WAF policies across hundreds of managed accounts and distributions. This question instead requires demonstrating that paired packet traces show each flow and its response through one intended appliance. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
The proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH might confirm another remediation, for instance when an EC2-based application needs inbound HTTPS from a trusted proxy but no public SSH connections. This question instead requires demonstrating that paired packet traces show each flow and its response through one intended appliance. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A test request matching the rule is blocked while ordinary requests reach the target might confirm another remediation, for instance when an internet-facing application must block malicious HTTP request signatures but preserve normal API calls. This question instead requires demonstrating that paired packet traces show each flow and its response through one intended appliance. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 49
A network review finds: A company needs private access to many VPCs through one dedicated connection without individual VIF per VPC. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
A public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs
Changing an instance security group cannot choose one WAN path over another
Enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU
Creating two VIFs on one router does not eliminate shared physical failure
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
A public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs. The missing control matters because direct Connect gateway enables supported private routing connectivity to eligible gateways. The appropriate corrective action is to use a Direct Connect gateway and compatible Transit Gateway or virtual private gateway association design. To check the outcome, verify that approved on-premises prefixes reach connected VPC routes without public internet hops.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Changing an instance security group cannot choose one WAN path over another can be a real consequence when an enterprise wants routing priority between two BGP peers without changing every application subnet. Here the relevant failure is that a public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Enabling jumbo frames only on an EC2 instance does not resolve smaller tunnel path MTU can be a real consequence when a company has a 1 Gbps Direct Connect and sees packet drops only when sending oversized frames across a VPN overlay. Here the relevant failure is that a public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Creating two VIFs on one router does not eliminate shared physical failure can be a real consequence when two on-premises data centers require dedicated diverse private circuits to critical AWS Regions. Here the relevant failure is that a public VIF is not equivalent to private connectivity for arbitrary VPC CIDRs. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 50
Following remediation of "A company is investigating short bursts of traffic that disappear from five-minute aggregated metrics", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
The captured test packet includes expected headers and verifies the suspected issue
A controlled burst is visible in the chosen high-resolution observation source
The WAF log identifies the rule action and the ALB shows expected allowed requests
A packet-path comparison locates the failing branch's distinct policy or translation step
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A controlled burst is visible in the chosen high-resolution observation source. This directly tests whether the selected change, collect higher-resolution supported indicators or targeted packet telemetry during the incident, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that metric aggregation windows can hide transient events that affect applications. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation.
Incorrect Answers
A:
The captured test packet includes expected headers and verifies the suspected issue might confirm another remediation, for instance when an investigation requires knowing whether an EC2 guest received a malformed packet that flow records cannot describe. This question instead requires demonstrating that a controlled burst is visible in the chosen high-resolution observation source. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
The WAF log identifies the rule action and the ALB shows expected allowed requests might confirm another remediation, for instance when a security analyst wants to inspect why traffic to an ALB is blocked only for one user-agent string. This question instead requires demonstrating that a controlled burst is visible in the chosen high-resolution observation source. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
A packet-path comparison locates the failing branch's distinct policy or translation step might confirm another remediation, for instance when a SaaS service works from one branch but fails from another while both share central AWS Transit Gateway connectivity. This question instead requires demonstrating that a controlled burst is visible in the chosen high-resolution observation source. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
