Question 260
A team faces this situation: A regional edge application needs a custom allowlist for administrative URLs but the rule is attached only to an internal firewall. It proposes: Place the relevant HTTP path restrictions in a WAF web ACL on the public entry point. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
A tunnel establishes confidentiality but does not inherently enforce all application port restrictions
Network governance must respect the resource-owning account and supported cross-account references
Private connectivity does not replace authorization to perform specific API operations
Application-layer URL controls must be enforced where the HTTP request is inspected
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Application-layer URL controls must be enforced where the HTTP request is inspected. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, place the relevant HTTP path restrictions in a WAF web ACL on the public entry point, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, network-layer CIDR filtering alone cannot distinguish administrative paths on the same address. A suitable verification is that privileged URL requests are denied to untrusted clients and normal paths work.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A tunnel establishes confidentiality but does not inherently enforce all application port restrictions explains a different case, for example when a government workload must prove that only approved ports cross an external VPN into a regulated VPC. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that application-layer URL controls must be enforced where the HTTP request is inspected; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Network governance must respect the resource-owning account and supported cross-account references explains a different case, for example when an enterprise wants to apply security group rules across accounts but forgets that shared-VPC resources are owned by participants. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that application-layer URL controls must be enforced where the HTTP request is inspected; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Private connectivity does not replace authorization to perform specific API operations explains a different case, for example when an internal API uses a private endpoint but allows every company user to invoke destructive service operations. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that application-layer URL controls must be enforced where the HTTP request is inspected; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 261
An engineer selects the change "Attach regional gateways through approved cross-region and Direct Connect gateway connectivity" because A hybrid architecture must route between a branch and two AWS Regions while keeping transit resources centrally owned. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Inter-region and hybrid transit require explicit supported route tables and gateway associations
Gateway attachments and association permissions govern which VPC receives hybrid prefixes
Physical circuit readiness alone does not complete layer-three route exchange with AWS gateways
Physical failure-domain diversity matters more than the number of BGP sessions on one circuit
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Inter-region and hybrid transit require explicit supported route tables and gateway associations. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, attach regional gateways through approved cross-region and Direct Connect gateway connectivity, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a regional Direct Connect attachment alone does not imply reachability to every distant VPC. A suitable verification is that both regional application subnets pass the permitted branch test with controlled return routes.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Gateway attachments and association permissions govern which VPC receives hybrid prefixes explains a different case, for example when a team configured a Direct Connect private VIF but selected the wrong AWS account's virtual private gateway. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that inter-region and hybrid transit require explicit supported route tables and gateway associations; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Physical circuit readiness alone does not complete layer-three route exchange with AWS gateways explains a different case, for example when an approved Direct Connect connection is provisioned but private prefixes do not appear in the data center BGP table. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that inter-region and hybrid transit require explicit supported route tables and gateway associations; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Physical failure-domain diversity matters more than the number of BGP sessions on one circuit explains a different case, for example when a company wants a redundant connection but its two hosted Direct Connect links terminate in the same colocation facility. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that inter-region and hybrid transit require explicit supported route tables and gateway associations; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 262
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: An internal ALB becomes slow only during an autoscaling event and new targets receive requests before initialization?
Adding CPU to a task does not create free subnet IP addresses for ENIs
A new instance in Running state may not yet be ready for live transactions
Application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings
A passing CloudFormation syntax check cannot prove the desired resource path
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A new instance in Running state may not yet be ready for live transactions. The missing control matters because load balancer request distribution depends on backend health and lifecycle coordination. The appropriate corrective action is to inspect ALB target health transitions and application readiness and warm-up settings. To check the outcome, verify that target health remains accurate during scale-up and requests complete during warm-up.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Adding CPU to a task does not create free subnet IP addresses for ENIs can be a real consequence when a subnet has enough addresses on paper but ECS tasks cannot create ENIs in one availability zone. Here the relevant failure is that a new instance in Running state may not yet be ready for live transactions. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Application retries will not consistently fix incompatible jumbo-frame or tunnel settings can be a real consequence when a Direct Connect path carries small pings but large data transfers repeatedly stall after a network change. Here the relevant failure is that a new instance in Running state may not yet be ready for live transactions. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A passing CloudFormation syntax check cannot prove the desired resource path can be a real consequence when a production team wants a repeatable signal that approved VPC path permissions remain intact after each change. Here the relevant failure is that a new instance in Running state may not yet be ready for live transactions. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 263
A team chooses to Configure a Route 53 Resolver outbound endpoint and forwarding rule for the corporate domain after observing: A private EC2 workload must resolve legacy corporate names that only on-premises DNS hosts know. Which result would BEST verify the change?
Repeated queries converge after prior TTL expiry and the cutover timeline matches cache behavior
The same instance resolves its private name and an allowed public domain
An EC2 DNS lookup of the corporate zone reaches the on-premises resolver successfully
Valid records verify with a validating resolver and tampered signatures are rejected
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
An EC2 DNS lookup of the corporate zone reaches the on-premises resolver successfully. This directly tests whether the selected change, configure a Route 53 Resolver outbound endpoint and forwarding rule for the corporate domain, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that outbound endpoints and forwarding rules route selected AWS VPC queries to external DNS servers. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that creating another Route 53 public record cannot substitute for corporate authoritative resolution.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Repeated queries converge after prior TTL expiry and the cutover timeline matches cache behavior might confirm another remediation, for instance when a web administrator changed a DNS record but some users still reach an old destination for several minutes. This question instead requires demonstrating that an EC2 DNS lookup of the corporate zone reaches the on-premises resolver successfully. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
The same instance resolves its private name and an allowed public domain might confirm another remediation, for instance when an EC2 application in a VPC must resolve both internal records and external internet domain names. This question instead requires demonstrating that an EC2 DNS lookup of the corporate zone reaches the on-premises resolver successfully. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Valid records verify with a validating resolver and tampered signatures are rejected might confirm another remediation, for instance when a security team wants signed public DNS answers without falsely claiming that ordinary DNS transport is encrypted. This question instead requires demonstrating that an EC2 DNS lookup of the corporate zone reaches the on-premises resolver successfully. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 264
A team faces this situation: A standby Direct Connect link becomes preferred unexpectedly after a policy migration. It proposes: Inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
Egress architecture changes are enforced by subnet routing, not only NAT resource inventory
Cryptographic security association lifetimes and compatible algorithms affect tunnel stability
Endpoint-specific DNS names and ENI addresses can change through resource replacement
Primary and backup link selection can change when policy and prefix specificity differ
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Primary and backup link selection can change when policy and prefix specificity differ. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, assuming physical link speed alone dictates active route selection can cause surprises. A suitable verification is that routing output matches the documented preferred link under steady state.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Egress architecture changes are enforced by subnet routing, not only NAT resource inventory explains a different case, for example when a company retires a public NAT egress path but monitoring shows applications still using it. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that primary and backup link selection can change when policy and prefix specificity differ; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Cryptographic security association lifetimes and compatible algorithms affect tunnel stability explains a different case, for example when a site VPN fails at regular intervals due to expired or incompatible Internet Key Exchange settings. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that primary and backup link selection can change when policy and prefix specificity differ; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Endpoint-specific DNS names and ENI addresses can change through resource replacement explains a different case, for example when a VPC interface endpoint is deleted and recreated but scripts still target the former endpoint DNS name. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that primary and backup link selection can change when policy and prefix specificity differ; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 265
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: An on-premises office needs private access to a service distributed across provider VPCs with overlapping CIDRs. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider
Make forward and return Transit Gateway and VPC routes symmetric around stateful inspection
Add the intended principal to the endpoint service allow list and approve pending connections as required
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because interface endpoints provide service-level reachability without resolving overlapping network routing globally. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that propagating all overlapping provider prefixes into one Transit Gateway is ambiguous. Confirm the improvement by showing that clients use private endpoint names and do not receive broad provider route access.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Make forward and return Transit Gateway and VPC routes symmetric around stateful inspection would address a different scenario, such as when an EKS application connects to a private database through Transit Gateway but replies take a different uninspected route. The present issue requires use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Add the intended principal to the endpoint service allow list and approve pending connections as required would address a different scenario, such as when a provider account restricts PrivateLink endpoint-service connections but a new consumer account still cannot connect. The present issue requires use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet would address a different scenario, such as when a team uses a NAT gateway for private-subnet internet access but the private subnet route points to an internet gateway directly. The present issue requires use service-specific PrivateLink designs and controlled endpoint DNS for each provider because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 266
Following remediation of "A company adds a new VPC CIDR but on-premises routers continue to reach only the original address block", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Capture and route analysis show both SYN and return packets on the supported peer path
The new subnet prefix appears in BGP and end-to-end tests succeed
Loss of either customer device leaves a permitted independent route active
The regulated /24 takes the intended inspection route while ordinary addresses use the summary
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
The new subnet prefix appears in BGP and end-to-end tests succeed. This directly tests whether the selected change, update advertised prefixes and gateway routes for the new secondary CIDR, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that hybrid route distribution must include each intended reachable network prefix. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that adding IP space in AWS does not automatically teach a customer's router the new route.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Capture and route analysis show both SYN and return packets on the supported peer path might confirm another remediation, for instance when a VPC peering change broke one direction of a database connection but the forward route is present. This question instead requires demonstrating that the new subnet prefix appears in BGP and end-to-end tests succeed. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Loss of either customer device leaves a permitted independent route active might confirm another remediation, for instance when a customer configures redundant links but a single customer gateway remains the only advertised next hop. This question instead requires demonstrating that the new subnet prefix appears in BGP and end-to-end tests succeed. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
The regulated /24 takes the intended inspection route while ordinary addresses use the summary might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network engineer uses a summarised /16 route while one /24 subnet requires explicit inspection through another attachment. This question instead requires demonstrating that the new subnet prefix appears in BGP and end-to-end tests succeed. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 267
A team chooses to Use Route 53 weighted routing with appropriate policies and health checks after observing: A global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. Which result would BEST verify the change?
Independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers
Corporate hostnames reach on-premises DNS and unrelated public queries remain available
Aggregate test resolver answers show the expected statistical routing distribution
Internal test clients receive intended private answers while external clients receive public answers
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Aggregate test resolver answers show the expected statistical routing distribution. This directly tests whether the selected change, use Route 53 weighted routing with appropriate policies and health checks, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that weighted records influence proportions of DNS responses, not guaranteed individual HTTP requests. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Independent recursive lookups reach the active Route 53 authoritative name servers might confirm another remediation, for instance when a public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers. This question instead requires demonstrating that aggregate test resolver answers show the expected statistical routing distribution. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Corporate hostnames reach on-premises DNS and unrelated public queries remain available might confirm another remediation, for instance when an EC2 instance needs corporate DNS resolution but a broad forwarding rule also intercepts public domain lookups. This question instead requires demonstrating that aggregate test resolver answers show the expected statistical routing distribution. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Internal test clients receive intended private answers while external clients receive public answers might confirm another remediation, for instance when a company runs a split-horizon domain in public and private hosted zones and finds internal users seeing the wrong record. This question instead requires demonstrating that aggregate test resolver answers show the expected statistical routing distribution. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 268
The team addressed this problem: An AWS account has no trace of who modified a Route 53 Resolver forwarding rule during a DNS incident. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
A synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline
An expired test exception becomes noncompliant and triggers a review
An unauthorized route triggers a recorded noncompliant evaluation and response
The modification appears with actor, API action and request metadata
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
The modification appears with actor, API action and request metadata. This directly tests whether the selected change, inspect or enable CloudTrail coverage for supported Resolver API operations, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that resolver rule changes are control-plane management operations distinct from DNS queries. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that resolver query logging cannot necessarily reveal the administrator who changed rule association.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A synthetic degradation produces a meaningful alarm relative to baseline might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network operations dashboard shows an unusual traffic drop but there is no measure of pre-incident throughput. This question instead requires demonstrating that the modification appears with actor, API action and request metadata. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
An expired test exception becomes noncompliant and triggers a review might confirm another remediation, for instance when a regulated business uses Firewall Manager but resource exceptions have no owner or expiration date. This question instead requires demonstrating that the modification appears with actor, API action and request metadata. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
An unauthorized route triggers a recorded noncompliant evaluation and response might confirm another remediation, for instance when an auditor asks for evidence that prohibited network routes are detected if changed outside IaC. This question instead requires demonstrating that the modification appears with actor, API action and request metadata. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 269
An engineer selects the change "Review AWS Network Firewall log actions and combine with tested deny traffic" because A firewall deployment collects rule hit counts but compliance also requires knowing whether packets were actually dropped. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Alert and flow logs indicate how the firewall handled matching network traffic
Audit evidence integrity requires segregation of duties and protected log custody
Multiple layers of logging are needed to distinguish configuration changes from packet behavior
CloudTrail records resource API changes and actor context rather than every network packet
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Alert and flow logs indicate how the firewall handled matching network traffic. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, review AWS Network Firewall log actions and combine with tested deny traffic, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a rule match count alone may reflect monitoring rather than active drop enforcement. A suitable verification is that blocked test traffic fails and firewall logs report the intended drop action.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Audit evidence integrity requires segregation of duties and protected log custody explains a different case, for example when an organization centralizes network logs but data analysts have permission to delete or alter evidence. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that alert and flow logs indicate how the firewall handled matching network traffic; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Multiple layers of logging are needed to distinguish configuration changes from packet behavior explains a different case, for example when a SOC wants to distinguish whether a network outage followed a VPC routing update or an application deployment. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that alert and flow logs indicate how the firewall handled matching network traffic; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
CloudTrail records resource API changes and actor context rather than every network packet explains a different case, for example when a SOC needs a historical record of security group changes and the principal who made each change. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that alert and flow logs indicate how the firewall handled matching network traffic; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 270
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—Two on-premises data centers require dedicated diverse private circuits to critical AWS Regions—which action should the engineer take?
Verify received and advertised BGP routes, filters, and expected ASN relationships
Use physically diverse Direct Connect connections and redundancy designs meeting the resiliency target
Use a Direct Connect public virtual interface when the public-service routing requirements fit
Plan consistent end-to-end MTU and MSS handling across tunnel encapsulation
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Use physically diverse Direct Connect connections and redundancy designs meeting the resiliency target. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because direct Connect high availability depends on independent locations and devices, not merely two VLANs. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that creating two VIFs on one router does not eliminate shared physical failure. Confirm the improvement by showing that a documented diverse-link failure test keeps the hybrid application reachable.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Verify received and advertised BGP routes, filters, and expected ASN relationships would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises router cannot reach AWS advertised networks because its peer omits required customer prefixes. The present issue requires use physically diverse Direct Connect connections and redundancy designs meeting the resiliency target because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use a Direct Connect public virtual interface when the public-service routing requirements fit would address a different scenario, such as when a corporate office needs AWS public service endpoints over a dedicated public routing path without private VPC address exchange. The present issue requires use physically diverse Direct Connect connections and redundancy designs meeting the resiliency target because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Plan consistent end-to-end MTU and MSS handling across tunnel encapsulation would address a different scenario, such as when a company has a 1 Gbps Direct Connect and sees packet drops only when sending oversized frames across a VPN overlay. The present issue requires use physically diverse Direct Connect connections and redundancy designs meeting the resiliency target because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.

We don't say that these free VCEs sent by our members aren't reliable (experience shows that they are). But you should use your critical thinking as to what you download and memorize.
