Question 120
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A team uses a NAT gateway for private-subnet internet access but the private subnet route points to an internet gateway directly. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies
Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because a private subnet without public IPs uses NAT for ordinary IPv4 internet egress. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that an internet gateway route alone does not translate a private-only instance source. Confirm the improvement by showing that an approved download succeeds and the private instance has no public-address requirement.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables would address a different scenario, such as when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. The present issue requires route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies would address a different scenario, such as when a team wants to restrict S3 access through a gateway endpoint to specific buckets. The present issue requires route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes would address a different scenario, such as when a VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured. The present issue requires route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 121
For this networking situation, Many application accounts share centrally owned subnet infrastructure but require isolated resource ownership, the team applies "Use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources". Which validation is strongest?
Participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced
An address plan documents unique prefixes and new VPC allocation tests reject collisions
Only accepted principals connect to the endpoint service and other networks remain isolated
The consumer reaches the specific service without being able to route all provider IP ranges
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced. This directly tests whether the selected change, use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that shared VPCs centralize subnet administration while participants retain ownership of their supported resources. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance.
Incorrect Answers
B:
An address plan documents unique prefixes and new VPC allocation tests reject collisions might confirm another remediation, for instance when a network architecture team cannot summarize cloud address blocks because business units allocated overlapping private ranges. This question instead requires demonstrating that participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Only accepted principals connect to the endpoint service and other networks remain isolated might confirm another remediation, for instance when two accounts need to expose a service but organization policy forbids consumer access to provider route tables. This question instead requires demonstrating that participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
The consumer reaches the specific service without being able to route all provider IP ranges might confirm another remediation, for instance when two teams have overlapping VPC CIDRs but must consume one narrowly defined service privately. This question instead requires demonstrating that participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 122
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: A company is investigating short bursts of traffic that disappear from five-minute aggregated metrics?
Flow-log ACCEPT alone can conceal a failed listener or wrong destination port
A smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation
A passing CloudFormation syntax check cannot prove the desired resource path
A stateful security group allow rule cannot compensate for stateless NACL denial
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation. The missing control matters because metric aggregation windows can hide transient events that affect applications. The appropriate corrective action is to collect higher-resolution supported indicators or targeted packet telemetry during the incident. To check the outcome, verify that a controlled burst is visible in the chosen high-resolution observation source.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Flow-log ACCEPT alone can conceal a failed listener or wrong destination port can be a real consequence when a team sees ACCEPT records in VPC Flow Logs but an HTTPS application still times out. Here the relevant failure is that a smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A passing CloudFormation syntax check cannot prove the desired resource path can be a real consequence when a production team wants a repeatable signal that approved VPC path permissions remain intact after each change. Here the relevant failure is that a smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A stateful security group allow rule cannot compensate for stateless NACL denial can be a real consequence when an EC2 instance drops UDP while TCP works and a team assumes the security group must be the only blocker. Here the relevant failure is that a smooth long-window graph does not prove the absence of brief saturation. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 123
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: A VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables
Apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes
Add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions
Complete egress and return routing through the transit attachment, NAT gateway and gateway route tables
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because vPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that peering acceptance alone does not install all necessary subnet routes. Confirm the improvement by showing that forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables would address a different scenario, such as when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. The present issue requires add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes would address a different scenario, such as when a multi-account network has many inconsistent VPC subnet CIDRs that overlap a corporate VPN route. The present issue requires add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Complete egress and return routing through the transit attachment, NAT gateway and gateway route tables would address a different scenario, such as when a spoke VPC with a default route to Transit Gateway cannot reach the internet through central NAT because the egress VPC lacks the return path. The present issue requires add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 124
The team addressed this problem: An organization needs a private TLS certificate for service-to-service connections and considers embedding the CA private key in a container image. Which observation BEST demonstrates the required result?
Pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check
The application rejects an invalid database certificate and accepts a trusted one
Clients resolve the private name and validate a matching certificate chain
Workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works. This directly tests whether the selected change, issue certificates through controlled CA services and retain signing keys outside workload images, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that cA private keys are high-impact signing authority and should not be distributed with applications. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a leaked signing key could allow attackers to mint trusted internal identities.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Pre-expiry alarms work and clients complete a valid certificate chain check might confirm another remediation, for instance when a compliance group wants clients to reject an expired ALB certificate before signing into a banking app. This question instead requires demonstrating that workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
The application rejects an invalid database certificate and accepts a trusted one might confirm another remediation, for instance when a company uses encrypted RDS connections but EC2 applications do not validate the RDS server certificate. This question instead requires demonstrating that workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Clients resolve the private name and validate a matching certificate chain might confirm another remediation, for instance when an application uses private DNS for its service but clients fail TLS validation because the certificate contains only the public hostname. This question instead requires demonstrating that workload images have no CA signing key while approved certificate issuance works. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 125
A network review finds: A regional edge application needs a custom allowlist for administrative URLs but the rule is attached only to an internal firewall. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
Network-layer CIDR filtering alone cannot distinguish administrative paths on the same address
Unnecessary broad inbound SG rules allow new unwanted connections, not just replies
A VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering
A per-instance security group cannot restore a saturated upstream connection
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Network-layer CIDR filtering alone cannot distinguish administrative paths on the same address. The missing control matters because application-layer URL controls must be enforced where the HTTP request is inspected. The appropriate corrective action is to place the relevant HTTP path restrictions in a WAF web ACL on the public entry point. To check the outcome, verify that privileged URL requests are denied to untrusted clients and normal paths work.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Unnecessary broad inbound SG rules allow new unwanted connections, not just replies can be a real consequence when a network engineer opens all ephemeral ports inbound in a security group believing return packets require explicit permits. Here the relevant failure is that network-layer CIDR filtering alone cannot distinguish administrative paths on the same address. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering can be a real consequence when an internet-facing application must block malicious HTTP request signatures but preserve normal API calls. Here the relevant failure is that network-layer CIDR filtering alone cannot distinguish administrative paths on the same address. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A per-instance security group cannot restore a saturated upstream connection can be a real consequence when an organization has public APIs threatened by volumetric DDoS floods that could exhaust upstream bandwidth. Here the relevant failure is that network-layer CIDR filtering alone cannot distinguish administrative paths on the same address. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 126
For the scenario "A VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets", the proposed response is "Add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
VPC peering does not provide transitive routing across multiple peer connections
VPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions
A private subnet without public IPs uses NAT for ordinary IPv4 internet egress
Private DNS can resolve supported public service hostnames to interface endpoint addresses
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
VPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, peering acceptance alone does not install all necessary subnet routes. A suitable verification is that forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy.
Incorrect Answers
A:
VPC peering does not provide transitive routing across multiple peer connections explains a different case, for example when an EC2 application in a peered VPC assumes it can reach a third VPC by using the middle peer. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that vPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
A private subnet without public IPs uses NAT for ordinary IPv4 internet egress explains a different case, for example when a team uses a NAT gateway for private-subnet internet access but the private subnet route points to an internet gateway directly. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that vPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Private DNS can resolve supported public service hostnames to interface endpoint addresses explains a different case, for example when an interface endpoint exists but its private DNS alias is disabled and applications still resolve a public service address. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that vPC peering requires explicit routing plus resource-level traffic permissions; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 127
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A central networking account owns a Transit Gateway, but a workload account cannot attach without approved sharing. Which outcome is the principal concern?
Sharing the provider account's full route table is not needed for one selected service
Creating a NAT gateway in one VPC does not automatically serve remote VPCs
Copying the Transit Gateway ID alone does not grant the account attachment permission
Assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Copying the Transit Gateway ID alone does not grant the account attachment permission. The missing control matters because aWS RAM enables resource sharing without making the spoke account the transit resource owner. The appropriate corrective action is to share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy. To check the outcome, verify that the approved attachment becomes available under the intended central control policy.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Sharing the provider account's full route table is not needed for one selected service can be a real consequence when two accounts need to expose a service but organization policy forbids consumer access to provider route tables. Here the relevant failure is that copying the Transit Gateway ID alone does not grant the account attachment permission. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Creating a NAT gateway in one VPC does not automatically serve remote VPCs can be a real consequence when a large AWS organization needs egress through centralized networking while preserving per-spoke isolation. Here the relevant failure is that copying the Transit Gateway ID alone does not grant the account attachment permission. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance can be a real consequence when many application accounts share centrally owned subnet infrastructure but require isolated resource ownership. Here the relevant failure is that copying the Transit Gateway ID alone does not grant the account attachment permission. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 128
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A Site-to-Site VPN has an old cipher suite that is no longer permitted under corporate cryptographic policy. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported
Enable full certificate chain and hostname validation on the client
Enable TLS certificate validation and maintain supported trust bundle rotation
Update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because encrypted tunnel security depends on negotiated cryptographic properties and policy compatibility. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that leaving deprecated suites enabled may violate governance even if the tunnel stays up. Confirm the improvement by showing that a renegotiated tunnel reports only approved algorithms and continues required connectivity.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Clarify DNSSEC integrity protection and implement DNS transport confidentiality separately where supported would address a different scenario, such as when a security team enables Route 53 DNSSEC signing and claims it will hide which domains users query. The present issue requires update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Enable full certificate chain and hostname validation on the client would address a different scenario, such as when an API uses application TLS but accepts any certificate hostname for connections to a private upstream. The present issue requires update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Enable TLS certificate validation and maintain supported trust bundle rotation would address a different scenario, such as when a company uses encrypted RDS connections but EC2 applications do not validate the RDS server certificate. The present issue requires update both tunnel peers to a mutually supported approved IKE and IPsec algorithm suite because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 129
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A team wants to minimize inter-Region data charges for a global workload with frequent large cross-region responses. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Place computation and cache near user demand while modeling regional replication needs
Compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs
Select a compatible end-to-end MTU and MSS policy after testing each hop
Review Transit Gateway multicast capabilities and appropriate instance or attachment constraints
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Place computation and cache near user demand while modeling regional replication needs. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because cross-Region transfer and origin placement affect both latency and billed data movement. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that sending every read across Regions can waste bandwidth despite local available replicas. Confirm the improvement by showing that cost and latency profiles improve when reads are served within the permitted Region.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Compare per-attachment and data-processing costs with direct VPC peering needs would address a different scenario, such as when a company routes every VPC pair through Transit Gateway despite needing only one low-volume peer relationship. The present issue requires place computation and cache near user demand while modeling regional replication needs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Select a compatible end-to-end MTU and MSS policy after testing each hop would address a different scenario, such as when a client sends very large packets through a network path containing VPC, VPN and an on-premises firewall with different MTUs. The present issue requires place computation and cache near user demand while modeling regional replication needs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Review Transit Gateway multicast capabilities and appropriate instance or attachment constraints would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants to receive multicast from on premises into AWS applications but its current peering design lacks required support. The present issue requires place computation and cache near user demand while modeling regional replication needs because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 130
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—An enterprise must preserve source-client IP for a global TCP service using an accelerator and regional targets—which action should the engineer take?
Use CloudFront cache behaviors with suitable TTL and origin request policies
Choose Global Accelerator endpoint types and client-IP preservation support appropriate to the design
Select Global Accelerator supported UDP listeners and health-checked regional endpoints
Use CloudFront with an HTTP-capable origin and associate AWS WAF on the distribution
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Choose Global Accelerator endpoint types and client-IP preservation support appropriate to the design. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because source-IP visibility depends on supported endpoint integrations and forwarding semantics. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that assuming every accelerator endpoint preserves the original source address can break allowlists. Confirm the improvement by showing that backend access logs contain the verified source address for each supported endpoint type.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use CloudFront cache behaviors with suitable TTL and origin request policies would address a different scenario, such as when a global video publisher has high origin load because viewers repeatedly request the same public media files. The present issue requires choose Global Accelerator endpoint types and client-IP preservation support appropriate to the design because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Select Global Accelerator supported UDP listeners and health-checked regional endpoints would address a different scenario, such as when a multiplayer client cannot tolerate DNS change delays during regional failure and uses UDP transport. The present issue requires choose Global Accelerator endpoint types and client-IP preservation support appropriate to the design because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Use CloudFront with an HTTP-capable origin and associate AWS WAF on the distribution would address a different scenario, such as when a web application needs HTTP edge caching and WAF protection but was placed behind a TCP-only NLB. The present issue requires choose Global Accelerator endpoint types and client-IP preservation support appropriate to the design because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
