Question 110
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: A fleet of virtual firewalls must receive traffic with flow symmetry and transparent appliance insertion?
Assuming TCP passthrough performs application-layer client certificate validation can be incorrect
A normal HTTP ALB is not a drop-in transparent inspection hop for arbitrary IP packets
Manually editing generated ALB listeners outside the controller may be overwritten
Increasing instance CPU cannot fix a shorter intermediary idle timeout
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A normal HTTP ALB is not a drop-in transparent inspection hop for arbitrary IP packets. The missing control matters because gateway Load Balancer uses GENEVE to distribute network flows to security appliance targets. The appropriate corrective action is to choose Gateway Load Balancer with appliance targets and service insertion endpoints. To check the outcome, verify that bidirectional flow traces pass the intended inspection appliance without bypass.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Assuming TCP passthrough performs application-layer client certificate validation can be incorrect can be a real consequence when a service must authenticate incoming HTTPS clients at a proxy without terminating encryption at the wrong tier. Here the relevant failure is that a normal HTTP ALB is not a drop-in transparent inspection hop for arbitrary IP packets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Manually editing generated ALB listeners outside the controller may be overwritten can be a real consequence when an EKS platform needs Kubernetes Ingress-driven creation of an ALB across cluster namespaces. Here the relevant failure is that a normal HTTP ALB is not a drop-in transparent inspection hop for arbitrary IP packets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Increasing instance CPU cannot fix a shorter intermediary idle timeout can be a real consequence when a long-running upload behind an ALB is cut off after idle periods although the target process stays alive. Here the relevant failure is that a normal HTTP ALB is not a drop-in transparent inspection hop for arbitrary IP packets. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 111
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: The Direct Connect physical port is down but the application must automatically use an existing backup VPN. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Configure the appropriate transit VIF and supported Direct Connect gateway association and TGW routes
Configure both AWS-provided tunnels with monitored backup operation
Validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection
Check the customer gateway ASN, configured peer addresses and permitted TCP BGP sessions
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because hybrid failover depends on BGP route convergence and an independent alternative path. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that a standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure. Confirm the improvement by showing that traffic shifts to an active VPN tunnel with correct return routes.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Configure the appropriate transit VIF and supported Direct Connect gateway association and TGW routes would address a different scenario, such as when a data center connects to a shared Transit Gateway through a Direct Connect gateway and the route table lacks the VPC destination. The present issue requires validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Configure both AWS-provided tunnels with monitored backup operation would address a different scenario, such as when an enterprise provisions a VPN but only one of its provided tunnel endpoint configurations is deployed. The present issue requires validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Check the customer gateway ASN, configured peer addresses and permitted TCP BGP sessions would address a different scenario, such as when an on-premises site sends traffic to AWS over VPN but the customer router rejects expected BGP adjacency. The present issue requires validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 112
A team faces this situation: Two EC2 instances cannot connect and VPC Reachability Analyzer reports a blocked security group rule. It proposes: Repair the minimal security group permission and validate the intended packet path. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
Packet mirroring captures selected packet-level details missing from summary flow records
Configuration-based network path verification can detect route/SG/NACL drift early
Load balancer request distribution depends on backend health and lifecycle coordination
Reachability Analyzer identifies configured hop restrictions but does not send real user traffic
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Reachability Analyzer identifies configured hop restrictions but does not send real user traffic. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, repair the minimal security group permission and validate the intended packet path, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, restarting EC2 instances does not change a security-group-denied flow. A suitable verification is that a follow-up analysis succeeds and an application-level connection completes.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Packet mirroring captures selected packet-level details missing from summary flow records explains a different case, for example when an investigation requires knowing whether an EC2 guest received a malformed packet that flow records cannot describe. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that reachability Analyzer identifies configured hop restrictions but does not send real user traffic; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Configuration-based network path verification can detect route/SG/NACL drift early explains a different case, for example when a production team wants a repeatable signal that approved VPC path permissions remain intact after each change. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that reachability Analyzer identifies configured hop restrictions but does not send real user traffic; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Load balancer request distribution depends on backend health and lifecycle coordination explains a different case, for example when an internal ALB becomes slow only during an autoscaling event and new targets receive requests before initialization. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that reachability Analyzer identifies configured hop restrictions but does not send real user traffic; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 113
An engineer selects the change "Use CloudFront cache behaviors with suitable TTL and origin request policies" because A global video publisher has high origin load because viewers repeatedly request the same public media files. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
CloudFront edge caching reduces repetitive origin fetches for cacheable content
Global Accelerator manages healthy regional endpoint selection independently of customer DNS caches
CloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge
Global Accelerator steering uses stable anycast IPs rather than relying solely on resolver TTL
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
CloudFront edge caching reduces repetitive origin fetches for cacheable content. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use CloudFront cache behaviors with suitable TTL and origin request policies, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, sending every request to one Region adds latency and unnecessary origin traffic. A suitable verification is that cache hit ratio rises and origin request volume falls under equivalent viewer load.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Global Accelerator manages healthy regional endpoint selection independently of customer DNS caches explains a different case, for example when a public application has two regional ALBs and wants traffic to fail away from an entire unhealthy application Region. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cloudFront edge caching reduces repetitive origin fetches for cacheable content; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
CloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge explains a different case, for example when a web application needs HTTP edge caching and WAF protection but was placed behind a TCP-only NLB. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cloudFront edge caching reduces repetitive origin fetches for cacheable content; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Global Accelerator steering uses stable anycast IPs rather than relying solely on resolver TTL explains a different case, for example when a multiplayer client cannot tolerate DNS change delays during regional failure and uses UDP transport. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cloudFront edge caching reduces repetitive origin fetches for cacheable content; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 114
Following remediation of "A multi-tenant application has public load balancers but database instances should never accept internet connections", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
The proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH
An external connection test fails while the application tier reaches the database
Negative traffic is denied by the chosen supported control while valid flows continue
A simulated traffic event is handled by edge controls without application outage
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
An external connection test fails while the application tier reaches the database. This directly tests whether the selected change, place databases in private subnets and restrict security group sources to the application tier, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that tiered networking reduces attack surface by limiting route exposure and permitted identities. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that applying WAF to a public ALB does not make a publicly reachable database private.
Incorrect Answers
A:
The proxy can reach HTTPS and unrelated sources cannot open SSH might confirm another remediation, for instance when an EC2-based application needs inbound HTTPS from a trusted proxy but no public SSH connections. This question instead requires demonstrating that an external connection test fails while the application tier reaches the database. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Negative traffic is denied by the chosen supported control while valid flows continue might confirm another remediation, for instance when a developer says a security group deny rule should override an earlier allow but SG rules have no explicit deny action. This question instead requires demonstrating that an external connection test fails while the application tier reaches the database. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
A simulated traffic event is handled by edge controls without application outage might confirm another remediation, for instance when an organization has public APIs threatened by volumetric DDoS floods that could exhaust upstream bandwidth. This question instead requires demonstrating that an external connection test fails while the application tier reaches the database. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 115
A cloud architect observes the following gap: Two AWS accounts require shared private DNS resolution but the forwarding rule is only present in the networking account. Which outcome is the principal concern?
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching
A healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API
A centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs
Enabling signatures without correct delegation may not give validating resolvers the expected trust path
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
A centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs. The missing control matters because resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution. The appropriate corrective action is to share appropriate Resolver rules through RAM and associate them with consuming VPCs. To check the outcome, verify that queries from member VPCs reach the designated corporate DNS servers.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching can be a real consequence when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. Here the relevant failure is that a centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A healthy static homepage can cause DNS to keep advertising a failed API can be a real consequence when a Route 53 failover record references a health check that tests only the landing page while the API path is broken. Here the relevant failure is that a centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Enabling signatures without correct delegation may not give validating resolvers the expected trust path can be a real consequence when a public zone uses DNSSEC but the registrar does not publish the required DS record. Here the relevant failure is that a centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 116
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: An on-premises firewall permits IPSec negotiation but blocks encapsulated user traffic after tunnel setup. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection
Correct bidirectional route advertisements and test the forward and return path
Review IPsec security associations, protected networks, and return-route/filter policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Review IPsec security associations, protected networks, and return-route/filter policy. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because a successful IKE negotiation is not proof that permitted data-plane flows traverse the tunnel. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic. Confirm the improvement by showing that tunnel counters rise for intended traffic and end-to-end probes succeed.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Adopt supported BGP dynamic routing or explicitly maintain correct static failover logic would address a different scenario, such as when a customer VPN uses static routing while the team expects automatic failover after network changes. The present issue requires review IPsec security associations, protected networks, and return-route/filter policy because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection would address a different scenario, such as when the Direct Connect physical port is down but the application must automatically use an existing backup VPN. The present issue requires review IPsec security associations, protected networks, and return-route/filter policy because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Correct bidirectional route advertisements and test the forward and return path would address a different scenario, such as when a remote branch cannot reach AWS because its advertised VPC return prefix is absent from the corporate router. The present issue requires review IPsec security associations, protected networks, and return-route/filter policy because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 117
An engineer selects the change "Retain VPC DNS resolution support and configure the appropriate private hosted zone associations" because An EC2 application in a VPC must resolve both internal records and external internet domain names. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
AmazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed
Route 53 alias records support AWS resource targets at a zone apex unlike ordinary CNAME restrictions
Positive DNS response caching persists for the TTL observed before a change
Private hosted zone visibility is controlled by VPC association rather than internet exposure
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
AmazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, retain VPC DNS resolution support and configure the appropriate private hosted zone associations, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, disabling VPC DNS support can break both AWS-internal and external name resolution. A suitable verification is that the same instance resolves its private name and an allowed public domain.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Route 53 alias records support AWS resource targets at a zone apex unlike ordinary CNAME restrictions explains a different case, for example when a DNS migration changes an ALB endpoint frequently and an application owner wants Route 53 apex resolution. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that amazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Positive DNS response caching persists for the TTL observed before a change explains a different case, for example when a web administrator changed a DNS record but some users still reach an old destination for several minutes. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that amazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Private hosted zone visibility is controlled by VPC association rather than internet exposure explains a different case, for example when multiple accounts require the same private hosted zone but each VPC sits outside the zone owner's account. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that amazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 118
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: An enterprise must preserve source-client IP for a global TCP service using an accelerator and regional targets?
Sending every request to one Region adds latency and unnecessary origin traffic
Assuming every accelerator endpoint preserves the original source address can break allowlists
Network Load Balancer alone does not provide equivalent HTTP cache and WAF request inspection
An unrestricted origin endpoint bypasses edge policies and may be directly abused
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Assuming every accelerator endpoint preserves the original source address can break allowlists. The missing control matters because source-IP visibility depends on supported endpoint integrations and forwarding semantics. The appropriate corrective action is to choose Global Accelerator endpoint types and client-IP preservation support appropriate to the design. To check the outcome, verify that backend access logs contain the verified source address for each supported endpoint type.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Sending every request to one Region adds latency and unnecessary origin traffic can be a real consequence when a global video publisher has high origin load because viewers repeatedly request the same public media files. Here the relevant failure is that assuming every accelerator endpoint preserves the original source address can break allowlists. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Network Load Balancer alone does not provide equivalent HTTP cache and WAF request inspection can be a real consequence when a web application needs HTTP edge caching and WAF protection but was placed behind a TCP-only NLB. Here the relevant failure is that assuming every accelerator endpoint preserves the original source address can break allowlists. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
An unrestricted origin endpoint bypasses edge policies and may be directly abused can be a real consequence when an international API needs path-based origin routing while protecting the origin from direct public use. Here the relevant failure is that assuming every accelerator endpoint preserves the original source address can break allowlists. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 119
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A multi-region API owner wants to distinguish ALB client errors from backend target failures. Which outcome is the principal concern?
One successful ping cannot establish capacity, jitter, or long-term service resilience
Increasing origin bandwidth without measuring edge misses may not address actual delay
Relying only on VPC Flow Logs cannot identify HTTP status code causes
Flow Logs alone cannot show the packet bytes required for this authorized analysis
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Relying only on VPC Flow Logs cannot identify HTTP status code causes. The missing control matters because layer-seven access logs and target metrics expose request outcomes beyond basic network flows. The appropriate corrective action is to enable ALB access logs and monitor load balancer and target response metrics. To check the outcome, verify that an intentional backend error is visible with the expected request and target status.
Incorrect Answers
A:
One successful ping cannot establish capacity, jitter, or long-term service resilience can be a real consequence when a business needs a defensible hybrid network baseline for latency, packet loss, and utilization before adding Direct Connect. Here the relevant failure is that relying only on VPC Flow Logs cannot identify HTTP status code causes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Increasing origin bandwidth without measuring edge misses may not address actual delay can be a real consequence when a customer says a CloudFront distribution is slow but has no edge cache or origin performance baseline. Here the relevant failure is that relying only on VPC Flow Logs cannot identify HTTP status code causes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Flow Logs alone cannot show the packet bytes required for this authorized analysis can be a real consequence when a security analyst must inspect packet payload characteristics from supported EC2 network interfaces in a lab. Here the relevant failure is that relying only on VPC Flow Logs cannot identify HTTP status code causes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 120
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A team uses a NAT gateway for private-subnet internet access but the private subnet route points to an internet gateway directly. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies
Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because a private subnet without public IPs uses NAT for ordinary IPv4 internet egress. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that an internet gateway route alone does not translate a private-only instance source. Confirm the improvement by showing that an approved download succeeds and the private instance has no public-address requirement.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Add the intended Transit Gateway association and route propagation or static routes on the correct route tables would address a different scenario, such as when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. The present issue requires route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Apply an endpoint policy together with suitable IAM and bucket policies would address a different scenario, such as when a team wants to restrict S3 access through a gateway endpoint to specific buckets. The present issue requires route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes would address a different scenario, such as when a VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured. The present issue requires route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.

We don't say that these free VCEs sent by our members aren't reliable (experience shows that they are). But you should use your critical thinking as to what you download and memorize.
