Introduction to Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
3. GCP Regions and Zones
Welcome back. So, I wanted to cover a quick overview of GCP. What is a region, what is geography,other regions and what are the zones. So one of the things that you will want to know for the exam is that you want to definitely understand what a region is and what a zone is. So a region is basically an independent geographic area that has zones in it. As a result, that specific location or those locations with regions should typically have very low latency, typically less than five milliseconds. Now, a zone is a deployment area for your resources within a region. So again, a region is the top layer, and then a zone is under the region. very simple to understand. Now one of the things on the task list is that you're going to definitely want to understand some of the challenges around deploying resources and how you can deploy those redundantly. So we'll cover that. So again, you need to protect against the loss of an entire region, especially if there's an issue with the GCP zone, for example. You definitely need to take that into account. So we're going to talk about them in the next module: zoneal resources, regional resources, and multi-regional resources. But I wanted to just take a second to give you a quick little overview here of how GCP is set up. So GCP has regions, and these regions are basically geographic areas. So you have North America. You have South America. Asia and Europe, for example. And so one of the things that you need to be aware of on the test is what products you want to know what products.You don't need to know exactly what products are available where, but you need to be aware that not every product is going to be available in the Americas, Europe, or Asia Pacific. So, for example, App Engine (AppEngine) is not deployed in Oregon. now in America. You basically have four zones, you see? So you have Oregon, Iowa, South Carolina, and North Virginia. An app engine is available in three of those. Now, Compute Engine is available in all four, as is Container Engine, and you can see Cloud Functions is deployed only in Iowa, and so on and so forth. I won't again go through all of this. Just take a quick look and make sure that you're aware of this because again, you're going to get some questions, especially in the next module, which is going to ask you about what resources are considered zonal resources and what resources are considered multi-regional resources. So for example, you want to know that the Google Cloud Datastore is actually more of a multiregional resource, and so on and so forth. and we'll cover that in detail. Now if you go over here, select network and youcould see that for example, you could see that thepurple current regions and number events, so these are thecurrent network points that are configured in purple. And then you've got the blue that is the future. And again, that's pretty much what I wanted to make sure that you understood. So again, keep in mind that there are three specific regions with GCP. So you've got North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. And then under each of the regions, you've got zones. These are basically zones. They call them "products," but actually these are "products" here, and these are actually the zones, if you see that. So if you go over to Europe, you can see that they've got tea zones available in Europe, and it looks like there are four in Asia Pacific. So with that said, let's continue on. Let's go ahead and talk about the resources and what the difference is between a zonal resource, a regional resource, and a multi-regional resource. This is one of those areas in the test. You've just got to memorise it to a T. Let's go and continue on, and let's learn about zonal resources.
4. Demo - GCP SDK & CLI
So what you should do now is basically get ready to get some of the software components you're going to need to manage the Google Cloud Platform. Now you could use the console, but again, you may want to do some advanced tasks, you may want to script stuff, et cetera. What you want to do is log into your console. It doesn't matter what project you're on or anything. You want to go over to the right over here, and you'll see the icon over here with three buttons. Just select that, and you'll see that you'll see Downloads. So go select Downloads, and you can see that we have tools and plugins here. Now, immediately, the one thing you would need is going to be the SDK. And if you select the Google Cloud SDK, you will see that you can select whatever OS you're using. Now, since I'm on Windows doing this demo, I'm going to go ahead and select Windows. And again, as with anything, before you install it, take a look at the instructions and make sure that they make sense to you. And so the SDK does have the full kit as well as G Cloud and some other utilities, for example, for the different languages. So all we want to do now is basically download the SDK installer, and if you look down in the window here, you'll see that it is an executable. I click on that and I click "Run." And you want to, of course, pay attention to the privacy thing. Do you want to send stuff to Google? I don't personally want to licence instructions again. And then since I'm using a workstation, I'll leave it at that, and it will install it in the default folder. And then you have the option to install beta commands. In this particular case, I do want the bundle Python because, again, I would need to download that separately since it's going to put it in there. I like to just do that, and it is actually a recent version of two seven.So let's do that. And then I'm going to also install PowerShell since I'm on Windows; that gives me some additional capabilities, especially around scripting with Windows machines, for example. So I go install, which doesn't take long, and then I show details. It'll go ahead and show me the packages that it's installing. And then you'll see that it'll start moving here in about another 10 to 20 seconds or so at the most. Usually, it shouldn't take too long. And there it goes. So with that said, it's installing the components, and you can see that it also, if you scroll over, tells you the size of the version of the command-line tool. It also gives you the tools as well for BigQuery and the other platform-as-a-service capabilities, which is cool, so you don't have to download those libraries separately. And again, it is pretty much done. It's just going to do a quick backup of its installation, and then we are done. And that's all you should need to do. Then I'll show you how to bring up the commandline in the next demo, and it is done. So go ahead and select Next, then Finish, and you can see that it will install an icon and everything. And there we go. You can see that the SDK is up. Okay, let me play around with that later. But again, you go ahead and type in some basic commands like Gcloud or H, and then you go ahead and again select the account that you want to perform it from. So again, if you're logged into multiple accounts, it picks that up. You can go ahead and select that. It does a network test to make sure that the connections are there. And you have two options: one, re-initialize, or two, select, which will create a new configuration. You may want to do that, especially if you have multiple Google accounts. As you see, it picks it up. So I go over here, and it basically tells you, "Do you want Google SDK to basically view and manage your resources, your app engine capability, as well as your data services?" And again in this case, we want to be able to do that effectively in script. So we will go and let that happen. With that said, that's all you have to do. If you want to get acquainted with Gcloud, I recommend that you visit the tool guide over here and experiment with the tool sets and commands, as well as any configurations you may want to experiment with. So for example, these are commands around compute, and then you can scroll down and then go over to scripts over here. So for example, most Google Cloud platforms will likely want to do some scripting. For example, you can monitor your G Cloud account. You could also update processes, add a query, pull data, or do whatever you want to do. So again, tonnes of capabilities with this; we'll be talking a little bit more about a couple areas down the road around the G Cloud commands.
5. Demo on Quotas
So welcome back. Let's briefly talk about quotas. We know what quotas afford, keep control of the billing and thresholds, and also keep track of making sure thresholds are met, essentially. So, again, just in a nutshell, you go overto I am an Admin, go to quotas. And if this is a paid account, I'm using a free trial account, so it doesn't allow me to edit quotas or anything of that nature. But again, you could go over here and select resources that are unlimited. Or I could go back and select resources with quotes, like the APIs, for example. In this case, I could choose specific service metrics and then narrow it down to a specific reason region. So that's about all you needed to know. Know the quotas for the exam. Just know what they're for and how to go about addressing them here in the console if you need to.
6. GCP Pricing Calculator
Welcome back. So let's go ahead and talk about a tool that is important to know. not so much for the task, but from an architectural standpoint. This is called the Google Cloud Platform tform pricing. CalcSo I'll leave the link in the resources, of course. Feel free to take a look at it. As an example, very simple and similar to what Azure and Microsoft have. Let's say 1000 instances. And what are they for? Basically, I could put in anything I so choose.like, let's say, databases. I need to spell that right. And then I could go over here and select the operating system type of the virtual machines. Again, regular or preemptible Now Preemptible just means that it's not a static VM. Basically, if they need your resources, they'll take them. So if it's production, you need a regular VM. Then over here, you want to select the configuration. Again, how much memory, VCP use, or whatever that may be, If you're going to use local SSDs, again, you may need local SSDs. If you have a performance requirement to meet, you could select the location of the data center, whatever that may be. Committed usage. You could commit to one year, three years, or none. That's your call. average hours of running Again, is it 24 hours a day or is it not? If you have persistent disks, again, you want to identify whatever that may be. Just say 600 gigs. not exactly a whole lot. And then let's say I'm taking snapshots. Again, I'm not going to think this out, but again, let's say 1000 GB per month. I can add that to the estimate. Add that to the estimate as well, and you could see that this is based on a month. Again, this is pretty expensive. And again, a lot of the costs are going to be based on the fact that I'm using SSD drives, for example, as well as local drives. So with that said, this is just something to play around with. See if it makes sense to you again to use If you do a one-year discount, again, this is sky-high high prices.That's a database server. You could edit this. Again, play around with it. Now let's just check out Preemptible. Let's add that to the estimate. You'll see that the cost drops considerably as a result. But again, if you have production data, you don't want to use preventive measures by any means. You basically want a dedicated VM with local SSDs. Again, I could select those. Let's go ahead and see. In my estimates, I always include free usage. Okay? And again, load balancing Play with it, and, once again, that's all around. And that's just for Compute engine. And then let's say you're doing development. You want to use our app engine? Again, enter the right information container engine as well. Cloud storage. Let's say you need storage only. You want to set up an application that's running in house, but you need some cloud storage to back it up or use for Dr or whatever. Play around with this. See what you get. The networking bandwidth could be very significant, especially if you have a lot of applications that do a lot of transfers in and out. There's going to be some significant bandwidth charges. You may need to realize. Remember, when we go over billing, we'll go over network charging, such as ingress and egress, and the differences between those. What about if you need to transfer between zones? We're going to cover all this stuff. Don't worry about it. The main goal was to show you the tool sets, and you can see that if you scroll over, there are tonnes of areas to price in here. So take a look at this. Play around with it. Again, if you want to use cloud data flow, there's a cost. What about if you want to do monitoring of your GCP resources—again, another cost? So play around with it. See if it makes sense to you. To be honest, it is a little time-consuming, especially if you have a customer who will be looking at developing but also migrating databases and using a lot of APIs because the APIs add up. Then, if you get a monitor, etc., it can definitely run into lineup items. That could be over a hundred line items by the time you're done. So with that said, let's carry on.
1. Virtual Machines in GCP
Now with Google, it essentially has several different virtual machines, but once again, most of the ones you will be tested on and the questions will be around Compute Engine, and again, you want to know that Compute Engine is infrastructure as a service generalworkloads Container Engine is infrastructure as a service, platforms as a service, and containers all rolled into one. Now this is an area when I cover App Engine Iwant to go over a little bit more in detail. This is probably one of those questions that you just have to memorise to get it right, which is probably the way to look at it. So when you're asked about App Engine on the testthere's two different ways you can deploy it you usea standard config or you could use a flexible config. Now the question is really: what do you need? Do you need to have specific networking requirements? Do you need to use specific programming languages like Node.js, for example, or do you need a custom runtime environment or something of that nature? And again, if you know that flexible is going to accommodate custom run times, then that should at least help you out. And then, no, JS is not supported on App Engine standard, and I think that's probably by design just because that's a fairly common deployment in a lot of software shops, but I don't know the specific reason why that is. I didn't get a good answer as of yet. Then, you have cloud functions. This is your microservice. your serverless cloud capabilities. So again, when you do prepare for the test, do look at this slide again and make sure you understand where the virtual machines fit in. So again, remember that they're reused for different purposes. Do you know that cloud computing is geared toward a serverless approach and focused on micro services?App Engine is focused on platforms, as a service container engine. This is great for developers and for developing lightweight containers. Now a Compute Engine instance can run Linux and Windows Server, so you could run Linux or Windows on either. Now with Compute Engine, you could predefine or use custom templates for deploying a virtual machine, and when you do that when we go through the demo of running a virtual machine, you can see the vCPU on memory, the networking OS, and Linux and Windows pricing. Now one of the questions in the test did have a question about billing around virtual machines, and that was again mainly around Compute Engine. So my memory is farting on me Preemptable instances A preemptable instance is an instance that you would run if you didn't need that specific service to be ready for production. In other words, you want to do testing or something of that nature. The good part about it is that you do get a discount. So again, you want to use preemptible instances for non-production workloads ten minute minimum when you're billed for custom machine types Check out this link here The link will be at the bottom, and then you have a recommendation engine. And this is actually sort of cool. When we do our demo, you'll see that it'll actually scan all your resources and say, "Hey, you're not using this, you're not using that, or you need to look at utilising other instances." So that's a pretty good little tool there. Now, in an inferred instance, again on the test, you're going to see some of these terms like "preemptible inferred." You have to know what they mean because in the case studies they like to ask you a question: "Do you need an inferred instance or do you need a preemptible instance?" And again, you need to know what that means. So for billing purposes, this is basically an inferred instance. It's basically an instance using the same zone that will be combined into a single charge so that you get the biggest discount. So basically, if you have multiple machines used in the same zone, you'll get a better discount for those because the pricing can be different in different zones. So that's an area, there discounts. You are now charged for ten minute minimums and every minute after that. Again, for the test, you want to highlight that, of course, for the test, just so you know. Now the lower price is for the preemptive instances, and then if you have a longer term, like over a year, then there are additional discounts. Custom types are discounted based on a percentage of total use. So again, if you're using it 80% of the time, the discount is greater than if you're using it 40% of the time. Inferred instance again I'm covering that again because this is a confusing term here. Again, it's using the same type of machines in the same zone. You'll combine those charges toget the greater discount. Now what about storage with virtual machines? Now we'll cover storage separately, but when it comes to virtual machines, a few things I did want to cover just in detail are that you have persistent disks, you have local SSD disks, and again, just know that there are different types of these. If your customer is needing to have a disc essentially attached to that virtual machine instance, then you need a persistent disk, but if you don't need that, then again, you get away with not having that. Now that persistent discs are generally production-ready, they have better performance with networking. With the virtual machine, you can create default custom networks as well. There are also auto networks; I didn't include them for inbound or outbound traffic. Firewalls You could also do load balancing as well and then create multiregional subnetworks. And again, when you go through the "managing resources," just know that these resources are disc images. So if you attach a disc image to a virtual machine, that disc image could essentially be copied over to another resource globally. That's again fairly useful, especially if the recovery you want to do involves testing or something of that nature. Regional resources: these are typically static resources like external IP addresses. Zonal resources are virtual machine instances, their types, and the discs as well. So again, just remember, the image is global, but the discs themselves are essentially zonal. Supportive protocols on the virtual machines would be TCP, UDP, and ICMP. And again, when we go through the networking, we cover this more in detail. Subnets. Now, subnets are a way to group resources together. We all know that there are different ways to define IP addresses. Now, how do you access your virtual machine? You can access that via SSH or Windows RDP. There are a couple of things that you'll need to know. With SSH, you need to make sure you allow TCP 22 on port 22. And with RDP, you need to make sure you open up port 33 89.So remember, for the test, if you need to get virtual machine access, it's SSH or Remote Data Protocol. And there are different ways to access SSH. You can go straight from the console, and I'll show you how you do that. You can SSH from Cloud Shell and the SDK, or from another computer using a third-party SSH client. Now, what happens if you have an availability issue? Now you want to make sure you have a feature called Auto Restart, and by default it is set to on. However, you can disable that. So just be aware that it should be set to "default." And so what will happen with default—just again down here—I don't know, I probably should put that in red. Now with the virtual machine, if that policy is set to default, what will happen is, let's say there are some maintenance issues, and your virtual machine instances are on those servers that are in that zone. What will happen is that those willautomatically be migrated to different hardware andit'll be transparent to you. So again, there's no downtime. Now, Auto Restart does not restart the VM if you shut it down manually, let's say. So again, if you make an API call or you login to the console and shut it off, auto-restart doesn't kick in; it has to be because of a maintenance issue. Billing. We're going to talk about that a few times in this course. Billing. Again, remember billing for egress. Egress means leaving the platform and going to the Internet. You are going to be charged different costs for different bandwidth requirements, different services, et cetera. Now, you're not billed for placing data in the GCP Cloud. Of course, there are some limitations. So, for example, if you're running BigQuery or BigTable or any of those data services, there are charges that you could incur if you exceed certain limits. But in general, if you're uploading to the CloudData Store, then that shouldn't be an issue. You shouldn't exceed thresholds. Now, as far as accessing your virtual machines, you may need to go through what's called a bastion host. Now a "bastion host" is again something that some folks may not know what it is, but if you don't know what a "bastion host" is, it's typically used as a jump-on point to the network. So let's say, for example, you have many different connections going into a cloud service provider. It's entirely possible that you'll cause headaches, network bandwidth issues, and scalability issues, especially with SSH, which typically doesn't scale well, and then have them go to a bastion host, which is essentially a jumping off point. So when we create a virtual machine, there are a couple of different ways to do it. The first method is to use the console, which I will demonstrate as well as the command line. And then you go through the API. Now, when you create a virtual machine, a lot of the configuration issues are ones you really need to pay attention to. So let me go, and when I go to the console, I'll show you more about this. But it's critical to understand what's available in which zone, because just because you're in North America, such as Central, doesn't mean that Central corresponds to east or west. And so it could very well mean that you have a different processor type or configuration, the templates are going to be different, and this could have a significant effect, especially around disaster recovery and failover where you need to have the configurations match. What's a managed instance group? Now, a managed instance group is essentially a template that you're going to use to create and manage a bunch of instances, two or more, generally. And you can create these templates for migrating, aligning assets, scaling, recovering after failure, et cetera. And there's two types, there isZonal and then there is Regional. And again when we do the demoI'm going to show you all that. So as an instance group, make sure you know this for the test. Again, what I discovered on the test was that they really wanted to make sure you understood failover; they wanted to make sure you understood that the template is a global resource that is not bound to a Zonal region. However, once again, tying Zonal resources to a template limits that template to the zone. There's a lot of confusing stuff, and sometimes you may need to just document stuff or just think about it in a logical manner to make sure that you get it correct. Let me just make sure I covered yet. So there are two types of instance groups, and I didn't do a very good job. But let me just highlight this for you. You have a managed instance group. This is what uses a template, and everything in that should be pretty much the same or similar, whereas an unmanaged instance group is going to have dissimilar instances. So for example, you may have two different versions of Linux. One could be Ubuntu and the othercould be Susie and again that wouldbe considered an unmanaged instance group. So again, you don't have capabilities with auto scaling, rolling update support, or whatever. The only reason to use a managed instance group is if you want to typically apply load balancing to your preexisting config or two dissimilar instances. Now again, you can load balance, but you're not going to have additional capabilities. And again, I'll have a link for the documentation because it's important that you review that documentation for the test. It'll help you out greatly. As far as virtual machine images go, generally on an image you're going to have the bootloader, the operating system, the file system, structure software customization, and then image storage, again, could be etc. around that. So let's continue on to the next part of the module.
