AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 63
Question 620
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A batch data service saturates one EC2 network path because instances were placed on incompatible network tiers. What is the MOST direct risk?
Adding nodes without enough available VPC addresses may not add runnable Pods
DNS performance routing without effective health can direct users to unavailable applications
Forcing jumbo frames on just one hop can cause fragmentation or black holes
Increasing only disk IOPS does not always raise the network bandwidth ceiling
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Increasing only disk IOPS does not always raise the network bandwidth ceiling. The missing control matters because eC2 network throughput ceilings vary by instance family and workload pattern. The appropriate corrective action is to choose instance bandwidth capabilities and placement appropriate to the throughput objective. To check the outcome, verify that load testing confirms achievable sustained bandwidth on supported instance types.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Adding nodes without enough available VPC addresses may not add runnable Pods can be a real consequence when a shared VPC runs out of available ENIs and VPC addresses as its EKS worker fleet scales. Here the relevant failure is that increasing only disk IOPS does not always raise the network bandwidth ceiling. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
DNS performance routing without effective health can direct users to unavailable applications can be a real consequence when a company has clients across Regions but its Route 53 routing policy always selects the closest region even when that region's app is down. Here the relevant failure is that increasing only disk IOPS does not always raise the network bandwidth ceiling. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Forcing jumbo frames on just one hop can cause fragmentation or black holes can be a real consequence when a client sends very large packets through a network path containing VPC, VPN and an on-premises firewall with different MTUs. Here the relevant failure is that increasing only disk IOPS does not always raise the network bandwidth ceiling. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 621
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A standby Direct Connect link becomes preferred unexpectedly after a policy migration. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior
Map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop
Split gateway responsibility across independent devices and test route withdrawal
Inspect endpoint and identity or resource policy evaluation for the specific API action
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because primary and backup link selection can change when policy and prefix specificity differ. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that assuming physical link speed alone dictates active route selection can cause surprises. Confirm the improvement by showing that routing output matches the documented preferred link under steady state.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Map subnet default routes and migrate to the approved centralized egress next hop would address a different scenario, such as when a company retires a public NAT egress path but monitoring shows applications still using it. The present issue requires inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Split gateway responsibility across independent devices and test route withdrawal would address a different scenario, such as when a customer configures redundant links but a single customer gateway remains the only advertised next hop. The present issue requires inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Inspect endpoint and identity or resource policy evaluation for the specific API action would address a different scenario, such as when an organization uses VPC endpoints for private S3 access but an endpoint policy now rejects a required object operation. The present issue requires inspect customer BGP attributes and AWS-supported path preference behavior because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 622
Following remediation of "An organization needs central domain and IP reputation filtering for outbound workloads in many AWS accounts", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Negative and positive tests from each AZ traverse their matching firewall endpoint
Approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress
A simulated traffic event is handled by edge controls without application outage
Test requests from documented allowed and denied locations match the reviewed policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress. This directly tests whether the selected change, deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that egress inspection applies filtering only to traffic intentionally routed through the control. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that a standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Negative and positive tests from each AZ traverse their matching firewall endpoint might confirm another remediation, for instance when a cloud egress inspection design allows application traffic to bypass a Network Firewall route in one availability zone. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
A simulated traffic event is handled by edge controls without application outage might confirm another remediation, for instance when an organization has public APIs threatened by volumetric DDoS floods that could exhaust upstream bandwidth. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Test requests from documented allowed and denied locations match the reviewed policy might confirm another remediation, for instance when a production ALB must accept only approved client geographies under documented policy while retaining measured business exceptions. This question instead requires demonstrating that approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 623
A team chooses to Use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes after observing: A VPC with IPv6-only workloads must reach IPv4-only endpoints while NAT64 support is not configured. Which result would BEST verify the change?
Subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency
Forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy
An IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint
DNS answers resolve to endpoint ENI addresses and permitted calls stay private
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
An IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint. This directly tests whether the selected change, use supported DNS64 and NAT64 architecture with the appropriate NAT gateway and routes, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that iPv6-to-IPv4 reachability requires explicit protocol translation, not just egress-only IPv6 internet access. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that an egress-only internet gateway does not translate IPv6 clients into IPv4 destinations.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Subnet traffic to S3 uses the endpoint target with no public NAT dependency might confirm another remediation, for instance when a company set up a gateway endpoint for S3 but forgot to associate it with the subnet's route table. This question instead requires demonstrating that an IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Forward and response flows use the peering connection and meet security policy might confirm another remediation, for instance when a VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets. This question instead requires demonstrating that an IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
DNS answers resolve to endpoint ENI addresses and permitted calls stay private might confirm another remediation, for instance when an interface endpoint exists but its private DNS alias is disabled and applications still resolve a public service address. This question instead requires demonstrating that an IPv6-only test host resolves and reaches a documented IPv4-only endpoint. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 624
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: An internet-facing application must block malicious HTTP request signatures but preserve normal API calls. What is the MOST direct risk?
A security group does not provide explicit deny entries for the prohibited address
Coarse geographic rules without testing can deny legitimate travelers or global partners
A one-time manual security review cannot catch all later permissive rule changes
A VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
A VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering. The missing control matters because aWS WAF evaluates HTTP-layer attributes and rule actions on supported web entry points. The appropriate corrective action is to associate AWS WAF web ACL with a supported ALB or CloudFront resource. To check the outcome, verify that a test request matching the rule is blocked while ordinary requests reach the target.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A security group does not provide explicit deny entries for the prohibited address can be a real consequence when a private subnet must reject a prohibited IP address at its boundary even when security groups allow other application traffic. Here the relevant failure is that a VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Coarse geographic rules without testing can deny legitimate travelers or global partners can be a real consequence when a production ALB must accept only approved client geographies under documented policy while retaining measured business exceptions. Here the relevant failure is that a VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A one-time manual security review cannot catch all later permissive rule changes can be a real consequence when an organization wants automated discovery of broad SSH security-group rules across its accounts. Here the relevant failure is that a VPC network ACL cannot replace application-aware HTTP filtering. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 625
An engineer selects the change "Deploy a Route 53 Resolver inbound endpoint and conditionally forward the private domain from on premises" because An on-premises resolver cannot resolve a private Route 53 hosted zone associated with an application VPC. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Inbound Resolver endpoints accept DNS queries from authorized hybrid networks into VPC resolution
Public and private hosted zones with the same domain can contain different visibility-controlled data
DNSSEC establishes authenticity and integrity of supported DNS data through a trust chain
AmazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Inbound Resolver endpoints accept DNS queries from authorized hybrid networks into VPC resolution. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, deploy a Route 53 Resolver inbound endpoint and conditionally forward the private domain from on premises, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a public hosted zone will not safely expose internal-only resource names for this requirement. A suitable verification is that queries from on premises return the intended private records without publishing them publicly.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Public and private hosted zones with the same domain can contain different visibility-controlled data explains a different case, for example when a SaaS application needs customer-specific TXT validation records but should not expose internal private records. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that inbound Resolver endpoints accept DNS queries from authorized hybrid networks into VPC resolution; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
DNSSEC establishes authenticity and integrity of supported DNS data through a trust chain explains a different case, for example when a security team wants signed public DNS answers without falsely claiming that ordinary DNS transport is encrypted. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that inbound Resolver endpoints accept DNS queries from authorized hybrid networks into VPC resolution; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
AmazonProvidedDNS resolves supported VPC-private data and forwards ordinary internet lookups as designed explains a different case, for example when an EC2 application in a VPC must resolve both internal records and external internet domain names. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that inbound Resolver endpoints accept DNS queries from authorized hybrid networks into VPC resolution; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 626
Following remediation of "A web business wants bots rate-limited before they exhaust application login worker capacity", what evidence MOST directly establishes that it works?
Unauthorized principals are denied destructive calls even from approved subnets
Excess matching requests are throttled without blocking normal users at expected rates
Negative traffic is denied by the chosen supported control while valid flows continue
A test request matching the rule is blocked while ordinary requests reach the target
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Excess matching requests are throttled without blocking normal users at expected rates. This directly tests whether the selected change, use WAF rate-based rules with carefully scoped matching and client identity logic, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that wAF rate rules mitigate HTTP request bursts using supported aggregation characteristics. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that only increasing ALB target count may leave abusive login traffic unchecked.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Unauthorized principals are denied destructive calls even from approved subnets might confirm another remediation, for instance when an internal API uses a private endpoint but allows every company user to invoke destructive service operations. This question instead requires demonstrating that excess matching requests are throttled without blocking normal users at expected rates. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
C:
Negative traffic is denied by the chosen supported control while valid flows continue might confirm another remediation, for instance when a developer says a security group deny rule should override an earlier allow but SG rules have no explicit deny action. This question instead requires demonstrating that excess matching requests are throttled without blocking normal users at expected rates. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
A test request matching the rule is blocked while ordinary requests reach the target might confirm another remediation, for instance when an internet-facing application must block malicious HTTP request signatures but preserve normal API calls. This question instead requires demonstrating that excess matching requests are throttled without blocking normal users at expected rates. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 627
A team chooses to Design nonoverlapping CIDRs and precise advertised prefixes across hybrid BGP boundaries after observing: An on-premises route is summarized too broadly and overlaps multiple cloud address ranges. Which result would BEST verify the change?
BGP route advertisements produce the documented active and backup path preference
Failover testing withdraws the primary route and carries approved traffic over VPN
Routes for test prefixes converge to the intended AWS and local destinations
Failing one tunnel leaves the second route and connectivity operational
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Routes for test prefixes converge to the intended AWS and local destinations. This directly tests whether the selected change, design nonoverlapping CIDRs and precise advertised prefixes across hybrid BGP boundaries, achieved the intended network outcome. The key mechanism is that prefix overlap and route preference can silently divert traffic to unintended networks. The incident or compliance risk being reduced was that summarization without address governance can make distinct workloads unreachable.
Incorrect Answers
A:
BGP route advertisements produce the documented active and backup path preference might confirm another remediation, for instance when an enterprise wants routing priority between two BGP peers without changing every application subnet. This question instead requires demonstrating that routes for test prefixes converge to the intended AWS and local destinations. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
B:
Failover testing withdraws the primary route and carries approved traffic over VPN might confirm another remediation, for instance when a bank needs predictable private connectivity into AWS with an internet VPN failover during circuit outage. This question instead requires demonstrating that routes for test prefixes converge to the intended AWS and local destinations. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
D:
Failing one tunnel leaves the second route and connectivity operational might confirm another remediation, for instance when a company needs a redundant Site-to-Site VPN and both standard tunnels terminate on customer gateway devices. This question instead requires demonstrating that routes for test prefixes converge to the intended AWS and local destinations. The alternative would not validate the selected network fix.
Question 628
A team faces this situation: An enterprise streams security logs but delivery failures are not monitored, creating silent evidence gaps. It proposes: Monitor CloudWatch log-delivery errors and protect failed-message retry or buffering paths. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
Continuous AWS Config evaluation can detect drift in recorded resource configuration
Reachability Analyzer can validate modeled AWS configuration paths against intended deny reachability
Different AWS networking services emit different schemas that require a governed collection architecture
Logging pipeline reliability must be measured like any other operational network dependency
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Logging pipeline reliability must be measured like any other operational network dependency. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, monitor CloudWatch log-delivery errors and protect failed-message retry or buffering paths, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a configured log destination does not guarantee every event is delivered and retained. A suitable verification is that a simulated ingestion failure raises an alert and recovers buffered permitted events.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Continuous AWS Config evaluation can detect drift in recorded resource configuration explains a different case, for example when an auditor asks for evidence that prohibited network routes are detected if changed outside IaC. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that logging pipeline reliability must be measured like any other operational network dependency; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Reachability Analyzer can validate modeled AWS configuration paths against intended deny reachability explains a different case, for example when a security reviewer needs a repeatable audit that production VPC paths cannot reach a prohibited subnet. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that logging pipeline reliability must be measured like any other operational network dependency; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Different AWS networking services emit different schemas that require a governed collection architecture explains a different case, for example when a company needs to preserve compliance evidence from ALB, CloudFront, and Network Firewall in one protected location. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that logging pipeline reliability must be measured like any other operational network dependency; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 629
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: A batch data service saturates one EC2 network path because instances were placed on incompatible network tiers. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Choose instance bandwidth capabilities and placement appropriate to the throughput objective
Select a compatible end-to-end MTU and MSS policy after testing each hop
Plan appropriate pod-IP allocation, secondary CIDR resources and supported VPC CNI configuration
Combine performance-based DNS routing with application-relevant health evaluation
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Choose instance bandwidth capabilities and placement appropriate to the throughput objective. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because eC2 network throughput ceilings vary by instance family and workload pattern. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that increasing only disk IOPS does not always raise the network bandwidth ceiling. Confirm the improvement by showing that load testing confirms achievable sustained bandwidth on supported instance types.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Select a compatible end-to-end MTU and MSS policy after testing each hop would address a different scenario, such as when a client sends very large packets through a network path containing VPC, VPN and an on-premises firewall with different MTUs. The present issue requires choose instance bandwidth capabilities and placement appropriate to the throughput objective because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Plan appropriate pod-IP allocation, secondary CIDR resources and supported VPC CNI configuration would address a different scenario, such as when a shared VPC runs out of available ENIs and VPC addresses as its EKS worker fleet scales. The present issue requires choose instance bandwidth capabilities and placement appropriate to the throughput objective because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Combine performance-based DNS routing with application-relevant health evaluation would address a different scenario, such as when a company has clients across Regions but its Route 53 routing policy always selects the closest region even when that region's app is down. The present issue requires choose instance bandwidth capabilities and placement appropriate to the throughput objective because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 630
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: A spoke VPC with a default route to Transit Gateway cannot reach the internet through central NAT because the egress VPC lacks the return path?
Creating an endpoint in a VPC does not automatically update unrelated route tables
Putting 0.0.0.0/0 in one spoke subnet is insufficient by itself
An endpoint resource alone does not force every public hostname onto private addresses
An expanded route table does not repair two destinations using the same address block
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Putting 0.0.0.0/0 in one spoke subnet is insufficient by itself. The missing control matters because centralized egress must provide a working bidirectional route chain through stateful NAT. The appropriate corrective action is to complete egress and return routing through the transit attachment, NAT gateway and gateway route tables. To check the outcome, verify that a test source retains connection state and responses return via the approved central egress.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Creating an endpoint in a VPC does not automatically update unrelated route tables can be a real consequence when a company set up a gateway endpoint for S3 but forgot to associate it with the subnet's route table. Here the relevant failure is that putting 0.0.0.0/0 in one spoke subnet is insufficient by itself. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
An endpoint resource alone does not force every public hostname onto private addresses can be a real consequence when an interface endpoint exists but its private DNS alias is disabled and applications still resolve a public service address. Here the relevant failure is that putting 0.0.0.0/0 in one spoke subnet is insufficient by itself. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
An expanded route table does not repair two destinations using the same address block can be a real consequence when a multi-account network has many inconsistent VPC subnet CIDRs that overlap a corporate VPN route. Here the relevant failure is that putting 0.0.0.0/0 in one spoke subnet is insufficient by itself. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.
