AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty ANS-C01 Practice Test 35
Question 340
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A company wants to prevent untrusted VPCs from attaching to a central Transit Gateway automatically. What is the MOST direct risk?
One correctly configured route table does not prove every subnet follows inspection
An instance without a public IP can still have unintended paths or future exposure after changes
A one-time manual security review cannot catch all later permissive rule changes
A resource shared to every principal can create unexpected transit attachment requests
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
A resource shared to every principal can create unexpected transit attachment requests. The missing control matters because transit gateway attachment authorization is a governance boundary before route propagation. The appropriate corrective action is to require approved RAM principals and Transit Gateway attachment acceptance or controlled network policy. To check the outcome, verify that unauthorized attachment attempts fail and approved requests require documented acceptance.
Incorrect Answers
A:
One correctly configured route table does not prove every subnet follows inspection can be a real consequence when a cloud egress inspection design allows application traffic to bypass a Network Firewall route in one availability zone. Here the relevant failure is that a resource shared to every principal can create unexpected transit attachment requests. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
An instance without a public IP can still have unintended paths or future exposure after changes can be a real consequence when a security architect discovers an internet gateway route on a workload subnet that should be isolated from the public internet. Here the relevant failure is that a resource shared to every principal can create unexpected transit attachment requests. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A one-time manual security review cannot catch all later permissive rule changes can be a real consequence when an organization wants automated discovery of broad SSH security-group rules across its accounts. Here the relevant failure is that a resource shared to every principal can create unexpected transit attachment requests. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 341
A network review finds: A private application needs one coherent DNS resolution path from many shared-network VPCs to corporate systems. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
Assuming a rule in one VPC automatically applies across all accounts leaves queries broken
DNSSEC does not encrypt resolver queries or provide application TLS authentication
Weighted routing by itself does not promise a lowest-latency regional answer
Placing an external validation TXT solely in a private hosted zone makes public validation fail
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Assuming a rule in one VPC automatically applies across all accounts leaves queries broken. The missing control matters because centralized conditional forwarding can reduce inconsistent duplicated DNS configurations. The appropriate corrective action is to share Resolver forwarding rules and endpoint connectivity through an approved multi-account pattern. To check the outcome, verify that representative workload VPCs resolve the corporate domain through the same approved chain.
Incorrect Answers
B:
DNSSEC does not encrypt resolver queries or provide application TLS authentication can be a real consequence when a security team wants signed public DNS answers without falsely claiming that ordinary DNS transport is encrypted. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a rule in one VPC automatically applies across all accounts leaves queries broken. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Weighted routing by itself does not promise a lowest-latency regional answer can be a real consequence when a company wants users routed to the lowest-latency regional application while retaining health checks. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a rule in one VPC automatically applies across all accounts leaves queries broken. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Placing an external validation TXT solely in a private hosted zone makes public validation fail can be a real consequence when a SaaS application needs customer-specific TXT validation records but should not expose internal private records. Here the relevant failure is that assuming a rule in one VPC automatically applies across all accounts leaves queries broken. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 342
For the scenario "A new on-premises BIND server is allowed to send queries to Route 53 Resolver inbound endpoint over UDP but TCP responses time out", the proposed response is "Permit the required DNS UDP and TCP paths, including large-response fallbacks". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
Conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS
DNS can use TCP for larger responses or retry scenarios as well as UDP
DNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data
Resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
DNS can use TCP for larger responses or retry scenarios as well as UDP. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, permit the required DNS UDP and TCP paths, including large-response fallbacks, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, uDP-only validation can hide failures for truncated or large answers. A suitable verification is that large and ordinary DNS queries return successfully from the approved corporate resolver.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS explains a different case, for example when an EC2 instance needs corporate DNS resolution but a broad forwarding rule also intercepts public domain lookups. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNS can use TCP for larger responses or retry scenarios as well as UDP; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
DNSSEC validation requires a trusted signed chain from parent delegation to child data explains a different case, for example when a public zone uses DNSSEC but the registrar does not publish the required DS record. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNS can use TCP for larger responses or retry scenarios as well as UDP; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Resolver rule sharing and VPC association are explicit for multi-account name resolution explains a different case, for example when two AWS accounts require shared private DNS resolution but the forwarding rule is only present in the networking account. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that dNS can use TCP for larger responses or retry scenarios as well as UDP; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 343
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A flow log shows REJECT for a source and destination but a technician cannot tell which specific ACL caused it. Which outcome is the principal concern?
Adding CPU to a task does not create free subnet IP addresses for ENIs
A total monthly bill cannot identify which workload caused cross-region transfer spikes
Treating a REJECT record as proof of one particular NACL entry can misdirect fixes
Looking solely at instance CPU does not reveal a wrong transit attachment
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Treating a REJECT record as proof of one particular NACL entry can misdirect fixes. The missing control matters because flow logs report the action but not necessarily the exact rejecting rule. The appropriate corrective action is to correlate Flow Log results with security-group, NACL, route and Reachability Analyzer evidence. To check the outcome, verify that the reachability analysis names the blocking component and a scoped fix restores the path.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Adding CPU to a task does not create free subnet IP addresses for ENIs can be a real consequence when a subnet has enough addresses on paper but ECS tasks cannot create ENIs in one availability zone. Here the relevant failure is that treating a REJECT record as proof of one particular NACL entry can misdirect fixes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
A total monthly bill cannot identify which workload caused cross-region transfer spikes can be a real consequence when an engineering group wants to attribute inter-region data transfer growth to one service and routing path. Here the relevant failure is that treating a REJECT record as proof of one particular NACL entry can misdirect fixes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Looking solely at instance CPU does not reveal a wrong transit attachment can be a real consequence when a multi-VPC application shows intermittent failure only when crossing a Transit Gateway after a recent route change. Here the relevant failure is that treating a REJECT record as proof of one particular NACL entry can misdirect fixes. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 344
A team faces this situation: A custom TCP service requires encrypted transport without exposing keys at the wrong layer. It proposes: Choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
Transport encryption and session handling must cover each exposed application step
A private dedicated circuit is not equivalent to encrypted IPsec or TLS transport
Trusting the remote database identity is distinct from simply encrypting connection bytes
TLS listener selection determines which endpoint terminates and validates encryption
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
TLS listener selection determines which endpoint terminates and validates encryption. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, choose compatible NLB TLS listener or TCP passthrough with backend TLS termination as appropriate, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, assuming a TCP listener automatically performs TLS inspection leaves policy unenforced. A suitable verification is that certificate tests establish the intended terminating component and protected payload.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Transport encryption and session handling must cover each exposed application step explains a different case, for example when a customer VPN carries application traffic securely but an application returns sensitive session tokens through an unauthenticated HTTP redirect. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that tLS listener selection determines which endpoint terminates and validates encryption; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
A private dedicated circuit is not equivalent to encrypted IPsec or TLS transport explains a different case, for example when a financial firm uses Direct Connect for regulated traffic but needs cryptographic protection while crossing the private circuit. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that tLS listener selection determines which endpoint terminates and validates encryption; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Trusting the remote database identity is distinct from simply encrypting connection bytes explains a different case, for example when a company uses encrypted RDS connections but EC2 applications do not validate the RDS server certificate. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that tLS listener selection determines which endpoint terminates and validates encryption; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 345
An engineer selects the change "Use a narrowly scoped Resolver outbound forwarding rule for the corporate suffix" because An EC2 instance needs corporate DNS resolution but a broad forwarding rule also intercepts public domain lookups. Which technical explanation BEST supports it?
Conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS
Outbound endpoint ENI source IPs need permitted DNS transport to target name servers
Hybrid DNS requests require network reachability to the Resolver endpoint as well as forwarding rules
Public DNS follows delegation chain name-server records rather than the zone console selected by users
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use a narrowly scoped Resolver outbound forwarding rule for the corporate suffix, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, an overly broad rule can send normal internet DNS queries to a corporate resolver that cannot answer. A suitable verification is that corporate hostnames reach on-premises DNS and unrelated public queries remain available.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Outbound endpoint ENI source IPs need permitted DNS transport to target name servers explains a different case, for example when an internal domain resolves correctly on the corporate network but fails in a VPC because the DNS server only answers from approved source IPs. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Hybrid DNS requests require network reachability to the Resolver endpoint as well as forwarding rules explains a different case, for example when an on-premises DNS appliance forwards internal AWS names to a VPC but has no routable destination for the VPC Resolver endpoint IPs. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Public DNS follows delegation chain name-server records rather than the zone console selected by users explains a different case, for example when a public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that conditional forwarding should match intended namespaces rather than redirect all DNS; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 346
For this AWS/hybrid networking scenario—Many application accounts share centrally owned subnet infrastructure but require isolated resource ownership—which action should the engineer take?
Use Transit Gateway route tables and symmetric inspection routing with appliance-mode considerations
Use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources
Use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions
Share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because shared VPCs centralize subnet administration while participants retain ownership of their supported resources. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance. Confirm the improvement by showing that participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use Transit Gateway route tables and symmetric inspection routing with appliance-mode considerations would address a different scenario, such as when a company wants security appliances in one inspection VPC but discovers spoke traffic can bypass the appliance. The present issue requires use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Use an endpoint service and accepted interface endpoints with scoped endpoint permissions would address a different scenario, such as when two accounts need to expose a service but organization policy forbids consumer access to provider route tables. The present issue requires use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Share the gateway using AWS RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and organization policy would address a different scenario, such as when a central networking account owns a Transit Gateway, but a workload account cannot attach without approved sharing. The present issue requires use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 347
AWS architects plan to Use AWS Network Manager views and relevant Transit Gateway telemetry for this requirement: A hybrid transit network has many attachments and needs a central view of route reachability and network events. Which principle is MOST relevant?
Reachability Analyzer models AWS configuration paths and identifies blockers without creating test packets
Network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking
CDN cache behavior and origin latency need separate measurements to localize performance bottlenecks
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use AWS Network Manager views and relevant Transit Gateway telemetry, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, checking one EC2 instance dashboard alone does not expose transit attachment connectivity. A suitable verification is that attachment state and route views match the approved network topology.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Reachability Analyzer models AWS configuration paths and identifies blockers without creating test packets explains a different case, for example when a network engineer wants automated proof that a security group and route table permit an intended VPC path. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Layer-seven access logs and target metrics expose request outcomes beyond basic network flows explains a different case, for example when a multi-region API owner wants to distinguish ALB client errors from backend target failures. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
CDN cache behavior and origin latency need separate measurements to localize performance bottlenecks explains a different case, for example when a customer says a CloudFront distribution is slow but has no edge cache or origin performance baseline. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that network Manager provides aggregate topology and route visibility for supported hybrid networking; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 348
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: Many application accounts share centrally owned subnet infrastructure but require isolated resource ownership. What is the MOST direct risk?
Deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity
Attaching a firewall VPC alone does not force other attachments to traverse it
Sharing the provider account's full route table is not needed for one selected service
Assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance. The missing control matters because shared VPCs centralize subnet administration while participants retain ownership of their supported resources. The appropriate corrective action is to use VPC sharing through AWS RAM with supported participant-account resources. To check the outcome, verify that participants launch resources into shared subnets while central networking controls remain enforced.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Deploying Transit Gateway for one uncomplicated pair may add avoidable cost and complexity can be a real consequence when two VPCs in one Region need a simple low-cost direct connection with nonoverlapping CIDR blocks. Here the relevant failure is that assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Attaching a firewall VPC alone does not force other attachments to traverse it can be a real consequence when a company wants security appliances in one inspection VPC but discovers spoke traffic can bypass the appliance. Here the relevant failure is that assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Sharing the provider account's full route table is not needed for one selected service can be a real consequence when two accounts need to expose a service but organization policy forbids consumer access to provider route tables. Here the relevant failure is that assuming shared VPCs imply all participant accounts share IAM privileges can weaken governance. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 349
A network review finds: The Direct Connect physical port is down but the application must automatically use an existing backup VPN. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
A standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure
A working underlay alone does not establish overlay routing for branch prefixes
Manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes
Restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
A standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure. The missing control matters because hybrid failover depends on BGP route convergence and an independent alternative path. The appropriate corrective action is to validate dynamic routing preference and backup advertisements before fault injection. To check the outcome, verify that traffic shifts to an active VPN tunnel with correct return routes.
Incorrect Answers
B:
A working underlay alone does not establish overlay routing for branch prefixes can be a real consequence when a company uses a Transit Gateway Connect attachment to carry SD-WAN routes but the overlay peer is not Established. Here the relevant failure is that a standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes can be a real consequence when a disaster recovery exercise shows VPN routes remain pinned to a removed data center after an appliance failure. Here the relevant failure is that a standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Restricting the protected CIDR set incorrectly can drop only the application traffic can be a real consequence when an on-premises firewall permits IPSec negotiation but blocks encapsulated user traffic after tunnel setup. Here the relevant failure is that a standby VPN that never advertises routes does not carry traffic after a primary failure. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 350
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: A data center connects to a shared Transit Gateway through a Direct Connect gateway and the route table lacks the VPC destination?
Assuming static VPN routing detects every remote CIDR change can blackhole traffic
A public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment
A VPC route toward the branch alone cannot deliver response packets back on premises
Manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment. The missing control matters because transit VIFs enable supported Transit Gateway connectivity through Direct Connect gateways. The appropriate corrective action is to configure the appropriate transit VIF and supported Direct Connect gateway association and TGW routes. To check the outcome, verify that a route table inspection and hybrid probe confirm the complete private path.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Assuming static VPN routing detects every remote CIDR change can blackhole traffic can be a real consequence when a customer VPN uses static routing while the team expects automatic failover after network changes. Here the relevant failure is that a public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
A VPC route toward the branch alone cannot deliver response packets back on premises can be a real consequence when a remote branch cannot reach AWS because its advertised VPC return prefix is absent from the corporate router. Here the relevant failure is that a public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Manually hiding the failed appliance without removing its routes can create persistent black holes can be a real consequence when a disaster recovery exercise shows VPN routes remain pinned to a removed data center after an appliance failure. Here the relevant failure is that a public VIF with unrelated public routes cannot reach the internal transit attachment. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.

We don't say that these free VCEs sent by our members aren't reliable (experience shows that they are). But you should use your critical thinking as to what you download and memorize.
