Question 180
This AWS networking condition remains unresolved: A service team has two private subnets but one subnet has no route toward the shared Transit Gateway. What is the MOST direct risk?
Traditional VPC peering cannot route overlapping private CIDR blocks to each other
Asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets
Available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity
A working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
A working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected. The missing control matters because per-subnet VPC routing can differ even within the same VPC and availability zone strategy. The appropriate corrective action is to add the correct Transit Gateway route to each relevant subnet route table. To check the outcome, verify that the intended subnet route tables each identify the Transit Gateway as next hop.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Traditional VPC peering cannot route overlapping private CIDR blocks to each other can be a real consequence when two overlapping-address networks want a private single-service connection without NAT routing between all hosts. Here the relevant failure is that a working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Asymmetric transit paths can cause an appliance to drop valid return packets can be a real consequence when an EKS application connects to a private database through Transit Gateway but replies take a different uninspected route. Here the relevant failure is that a working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Available attachments without suitable routes do not permit transit connectivity can be a real consequence when an attached spoke VPC cannot reach another spoke despite both attachments being Available on a Transit Gateway. Here the relevant failure is that a working route in a sibling subnet does not make every subnet connected. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 181
A network review finds: A VPC peering change broke one direction of a database connection but the forward route is present. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
One-way successful SYN delivery cannot establish a bidirectional TCP connection
Assuming physical link speed alone dictates active route selection can cause surprises
One blanket summary can bypass a more-specific security path if exceptions are absent
Peering attachment state alone does not propagate all changed VPC prefixes
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
One-way successful SYN delivery cannot establish a bidirectional TCP connection. The missing control matters because private routed connectivity requires symmetric return routing and compatible network controls. The appropriate corrective action is to inspect both peer route tables and stateful/stateless security filters. To check the outcome, verify that capture and route analysis show both SYN and return packets on the supported peer path.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Assuming physical link speed alone dictates active route selection can cause surprises can be a real consequence when a standby Direct Connect link becomes preferred unexpectedly after a policy migration. Here the relevant failure is that one-way successful SYN delivery cannot establish a bidirectional TCP connection. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
One blanket summary can bypass a more-specific security path if exceptions are absent can be a real consequence when a network engineer uses a summarised /16 route while one /24 subnet requires explicit inspection through another attachment. Here the relevant failure is that one-way successful SYN delivery cannot establish a bidirectional TCP connection. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Peering attachment state alone does not propagate all changed VPC prefixes can be a real consequence when a cross-region Transit Gateway peer shows up but a newly added subnet cannot reach remote service. Here the relevant failure is that one-way successful SYN delivery cannot establish a bidirectional TCP connection. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 182
For the scenario "An internal service uses mutual TLS but its client certificates are copied into publicly accessible build artifacts", the proposed response is "Move private keys to secure managed storage and use controlled certificate distribution". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
Encrypted tunnel security depends on negotiated cryptographic properties and policy compatibility
Mutual TLS authentication is undermined when certificate private keys are exposed
Certificate lifecycle management covers issuance, renewal, binding and expiration
Transport encryption and session handling must cover each exposed application step
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
Mutual TLS authentication is undermined when certificate private keys are exposed. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, move private keys to secure managed storage and use controlled certificate distribution, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, a valid certificate chain alone cannot establish identity if an attacker stole the private key. A suitable verification is that new client keys are issued securely and the exposed credentials are revoked.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Encrypted tunnel security depends on negotiated cryptographic properties and policy compatibility explains a different case, for example when a Site-to-Site VPN has an old cipher suite that is no longer permitted under corporate cryptographic policy. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that mutual TLS authentication is undermined when certificate private keys are exposed; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Certificate lifecycle management covers issuance, renewal, binding and expiration explains a different case, for example when a compliance group wants clients to reject an expired ALB certificate before signing into a banking app. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that mutual TLS authentication is undermined when certificate private keys are exposed; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Transport encryption and session handling must cover each exposed application step explains a different case, for example when a customer VPN carries application traffic securely but an application returns sensitive session tokens through an unauthenticated HTTP redirect. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that mutual TLS authentication is undermined when certificate private keys are exposed; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 183
During an AWS network design review, the team observes: A network engineer opens all ephemeral ports inbound in a security group believing return packets require explicit permits. Which solution BEST resolves the gap?
Use a least-privilege stateful security group with the exact required source and port
Close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design
Use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports
Configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because security groups track established flows while NACLs need separate return-traffic policy. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that unnecessary broad inbound SG rules allow new unwanted connections, not just replies. Confirm the improvement by showing that permitted initiated sessions return successfully without unrelated new inbound access.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Use a least-privilege stateful security group with the exact required source and port would address a different scenario, such as when an EC2-based application needs inbound HTTPS from a trusted proxy but no public SSH connections. The present issue requires use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Close the bypass paths with route and security controls consistent with the proxy design would address a different scenario, such as when a company routes all outbound traffic through a transparent proxy but direct routes to the NAT gateway remain available. The present issue requires use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Configure restrictive VPC endpoint, IAM, and bucket policy conditions as appropriate would address a different scenario, such as when an internal endpoint for S3 must permit only a specified business bucket although a subnet route to the service is present. The present issue requires use minimal stateful SG rules and carefully scope any stateless NACL return ports because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 184
A team faces this situation: A multi-tenant application has public load balancers but database instances should never accept internet connections. It proposes: Place databases in private subnets and restrict security group sources to the application tier. What underlying networking principle BEST explains this decision?
A tunnel establishes confidentiality but does not inherently enforce all application port restrictions
Detect-only visibility and packet blocking are different network-control outcomes
DDoS defenses must address volumetric network saturation before the origin link is overwhelmed
Tiered networking reduces attack surface by limiting route exposure and permitted identities
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Tiered networking reduces attack surface by limiting route exposure and permitted identities. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, place databases in private subnets and restrict security group sources to the application tier, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, applying WAF to a public ALB does not make a publicly reachable database private. A suitable verification is that an external connection test fails while the application tier reaches the database.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A tunnel establishes confidentiality but does not inherently enforce all application port restrictions explains a different case, for example when a government workload must prove that only approved ports cross an external VPN into a regulated VPC. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that tiered networking reduces attack surface by limiting route exposure and permitted identities; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
B:
Detect-only visibility and packet blocking are different network-control outcomes explains a different case, for example when a finance environment uses AWS Network Firewall but the rule group is set to log-only while policy requires blocking. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that tiered networking reduces attack surface by limiting route exposure and permitted identities; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
DDoS defenses must address volumetric network saturation before the origin link is overwhelmed explains a different case, for example when an organization has public APIs threatened by volumetric DDoS floods that could exhaust upstream bandwidth. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that tiered networking reduces attack surface by limiting route exposure and permitted identities; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
Question 185
A networking team must correct the following AWS condition: Two overlapping-address networks want a private single-service connection without NAT routing between all hosts. What is the MOST appropriate response?
Create an approved PrivateLink endpoint service with suitable NLB and interface endpoint
Add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions
Add the correct Transit Gateway route to each relevant subnet route table
Share Transit Gateway through RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and identity policy
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
Create an approved PrivateLink endpoint service with suitable NLB and interface endpoint. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because privateLink shares a selected service instead of advertising the provider VPC address space. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that traditional VPC peering cannot route overlapping private CIDR blocks to each other. Confirm the improvement by showing that an authorized consumer resolves and calls the target service without full peer reachability.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Add peer CIDR routes to both VPC route tables and review SG and NACL permissions would address a different scenario, such as when a VPC peering connection shows Active but EC2 hosts in the peer cannot exchange permitted packets. The present issue requires create an approved PrivateLink endpoint service with suitable NLB and interface endpoint because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Add the correct Transit Gateway route to each relevant subnet route table would address a different scenario, such as when a service team has two private subnets but one subnet has no route toward the shared Transit Gateway. The present issue requires create an approved PrivateLink endpoint service with suitable NLB and interface endpoint because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
D:
Share Transit Gateway through RAM and enforce attachment acceptance and identity policy would address a different scenario, such as when a central networking account wants to accept VPC attachments from member accounts without granting them full gateway administration. The present issue requires create an approved PrivateLink endpoint service with suitable NLB and interface endpoint because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 186
What failure mode is MOST relevant if a team ignores this issue: An on-premises DNS appliance forwards internal AWS names to a VPC but has no routable destination for the VPC Resolver endpoint IPs?
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching
A correct DNS zone record cannot answer queries that never reach its inbound endpoint
Changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution
A centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
A correct DNS zone record cannot answer queries that never reach its inbound endpoint. The missing control matters because hybrid DNS requests require network reachability to the Resolver endpoint as well as forwarding rules. The appropriate corrective action is to create a reachable Resolver inbound endpoint with permitted SG and hybrid network routes. To check the outcome, verify that on-premises queries arrive on the endpoint and resolve intended private AWS names.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Assuming exactly one in ten user connections uses canary ignores resolver caching can be a real consequence when a global service migration needs only ten percent of DNS answers to direct to a canary regional endpoint. Here the relevant failure is that a correct DNS zone record cannot answer queries that never reach its inbound endpoint. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Changing records inside an unreferenced hosted zone does not change global resolution can be a real consequence when a public delegated subdomain has been created in Route 53 but the registrar still delegates only to the old name servers. Here the relevant failure is that a correct DNS zone record cannot answer queries that never reach its inbound endpoint. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A centralized outbound endpoint is not automatically selected by other VPCs can be a real consequence when two AWS accounts require shared private DNS resolution but the forwarding rule is only present in the networking account. Here the relevant failure is that a correct DNS zone record cannot answer queries that never reach its inbound endpoint. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 187
A cloud architect observes the following gap: A central engineering team deploys identical network stacks into many AWS accounts and Regions. Which outcome is the principal concern?
A dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist
Manual labels without validation can drift across accounts and undermine cost allocation
Running one script with a hardcoded account credential increases operational and audit risk
A syntactically valid template does not guarantee the desired application packet path
Explanation
Correct Answer
C:
Running one script with a hardcoded account credential increases operational and audit risk. The missing control matters because organization-scale infrastructure delivery needs account and Region targeting with coordinated drift handling. The appropriate corrective action is to use CloudFormation StackSets or an equivalent governed multi-account delivery mechanism. To check the outcome, verify that target accounts receive intended resource versions and exceptions are visible.
Incorrect Answers
A:
A dashboard with no active alerting permits known route drift to persist can be a real consequence when an AWS Config rule finds unauthorized changes in VPC route tables but nobody learns about them until audit time. Here the relevant failure is that running one script with a hardcoded account credential increases operational and audit risk. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
B:
Manual labels without validation can drift across accounts and undermine cost allocation can be a real consequence when a network organization wants consistent subnet and Transit Gateway attachment tagging across all business accounts. Here the relevant failure is that running one script with a hardcoded account credential increases operational and audit risk. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
A syntactically valid template does not guarantee the desired application packet path can be a real consequence when a network pipeline requires assurance that a proposed security group modification will not break known dependencies. Here the relevant failure is that running one script with a hardcoded account credential increases operational and audit risk. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 188
An AWS network architect encounters this situation: A multi-account network has many inconsistent VPC subnet CIDRs that overlap a corporate VPN route. Which change BEST meets the documented requirement?
Keep routing changes with the VPC owner and allocate permitted participant resource privileges
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet
Add the intended principal to the endpoint service allow list and approve pending connections as required
Apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes
Explanation
Correct Answer
D:
Apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes. The stated configuration and business requirement call for this change because centralized IPAM allocation reduces address collision and routing ambiguity across accounts. Leaving the existing gap unresolved could mean that an expanded route table does not repair two destinations using the same address block. Confirm the improvement by showing that a reserved-pool allocation rejects conflicting CIDRs and the hybrid route is unambiguous.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Keep routing changes with the VPC owner and allocate permitted participant resource privileges would address a different scenario, such as when an AWS organization has a shared VPC but a participant account cannot edit the subnet route table it does not own. The present issue requires apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
B:
Route private-subnet internet traffic to a NAT gateway in a suitable public subnet would address a different scenario, such as when a team uses a NAT gateway for private-subnet internet access but the private subnet route points to an internet gateway directly. The present issue requires apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
C:
Add the intended principal to the endpoint service allow list and approve pending connections as required would address a different scenario, such as when a provider account restricts PrivateLink endpoint-service connections but a new consumer account still cannot connect. The present issue requires apply AWS VPC IP Address Manager governance before provisioning new prefixes because the network path and control point are different; the alternative does not directly meet this requirement.
Question 189
A network review finds: An organization needs central domain and IP reputation filtering for outbound workloads in many AWS accounts. Which consequence MOST clearly explains the need for a fix?
A standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections
Coarse geographic rules without testing can deny legitimate travelers or global partners
Asymmetric flows through different appliances can cause valid packets to be dropped
Assuming the VPC owner can automatically modify every participant security group can fail
Explanation
Correct Answer
A:
A standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections. The missing control matters because egress inspection applies filtering only to traffic intentionally routed through the control. The appropriate corrective action is to deploy centralized AWS Network Firewall or governed proxy with explicit egress routes. To check the outcome, verify that approved domains work and prohibited outbound destinations are blocked at egress.
Incorrect Answers
B:
Coarse geographic rules without testing can deny legitimate travelers or global partners can be a real consequence when a production ALB must accept only approved client geographies under documented policy while retaining measured business exceptions. Here the relevant failure is that a standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
C:
Asymmetric flows through different appliances can cause valid packets to be dropped can be a real consequence when an application uses Gateway Load Balancer appliances but loses flows when return traffic crosses a different inspection appliance. Here the relevant failure is that a standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
D:
Assuming the VPC owner can automatically modify every participant security group can fail can be a real consequence when an enterprise wants to apply security group rules across accounts but forgets that shared-VPC resources are owned by participants. Here the relevant failure is that a standalone WAF on one application ALB does not filter arbitrary outbound TCP connections. The alternative names a different failure mode and does not best account for the stated condition.
Question 190
For the scenario "A web application needs HTTP edge caching and WAF protection but was placed behind a TCP-only NLB", the proposed response is "Use CloudFront with an HTTP-capable origin and associate AWS WAF on the distribution". Which network behavior makes this suitable?
Content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing
CloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge
Source-IP visibility depends on supported endpoint integrations and forwarding semantics
Global Accelerator steering uses stable anycast IPs rather than relying solely on resolver TTL
Explanation
Correct Answer
B:
CloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge. This mechanism directly explains why the proposed change, use CloudFront with an HTTP-capable origin and associate AWS WAF on the distribution, fits this particular packet path or control requirement. Without it, network Load Balancer alone does not provide equivalent HTTP cache and WAF request inspection. A suitable verification is that repeated eligible responses are served at edges and blocked HTTP requests do not reach origin.
Incorrect Answers
A:
Content delivery edges shorten the viewer-to-edge leg and offload TLS processing explains a different case, for example when a website requires viewers in distant locations to reach the nearest available HTTP edge with HTTPS termination. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
C:
Source-IP visibility depends on supported endpoint integrations and forwarding semantics explains a different case, for example when an enterprise must preserve source-client IP for a global TCP service using an accelerator and regional targets. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.
D:
Global Accelerator steering uses stable anycast IPs rather than relying solely on resolver TTL explains a different case, for example when a multiplayer client cannot tolerate DNS change delays during regional failure and uses UDP transport. In the current topology, the deciding factor is that cloudFront and AWS WAF apply supported layer-seven controls at the edge; this choice therefore does not explain the specified remedy.

AWS ANS-C01 Advanced Networking Specialty: Designing and Operating Complex Networks Before Retirement
AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (ANS-C01) remains available in 2026, but it is a retiring certification.AWS states that December 31, 2026 is the last day to take the exam; certifications earned before retirement remain active for the standard three-year period. Candidates who plan to finish during the remaining window should verify scheduling early and prepare from the current exam guide rather than assuming the specialty will continue into 2027.
The exam is intended for networking specialists who design, implement, manage and secure AWS and hybrid network architectures at scale. AWS recommends about five years of hands-on experience architecting and implementing network solutions. That experience expectation is important: ANS-C01 is not a survey of VPC terminology. It asks candidates to combine routing, DNS, hybrid connectivity, multi-account design, edge services, automation, monitoring and security under real operational constraints. A focused overview ofAWS advanced networking can help frame how those topics interact, but the official domains should govern final preparation.
Network Design carries the largest share of the exam
The current ANS-C01 guide weights Network Design at 30% of scored content. The domain includes global edge services and traffic management, public and private DNS, load balancing, logging and monitoring requirements, hybrid routing, and connectivity across multiple accounts, Regions and VPCs. The common skill is architecture: selecting a pattern that meets availability, performance, security and operational requirements before implementation begins.
Advanced designs often have several technically valid options. A candidate may need to choose among Transit Gateway, VPC peering, PrivateLink, Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Global Accelerator, CloudFront or load-balancing patterns based on requirements that are easy to overlook. Transitive routing, overlapping CIDR blocks, private service exposure, encryption, throughput, latency and administrative boundaries can change the right answer even when all choices provide “connectivity.”
This is whyAWS VPC should be understood as the foundation of a wider topology rather than the whole design. CIDR planning, subnet placement, route tables, gateways, endpoints and security controls determine the local behavior, but enterprise architectures then connect many VPCs, accounts and regions. Addressing decisions that look harmless in one VPC can become major constraints when networks need to merge later.
AWS networking specialists routinely connect cloud networks to data centers, branches and other environments. Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN and BGP are therefore central concepts. Candidates should know why multiple connections are used, how routing preferences influence the active path, what happens when a circuit fails, and how encryption requirements affect the design.
The mechanics ofIPsec site-to-site VPNs are especially relevant because a tunnel being “up” does not prove the end-to-end application path is correct. Route propagation, local and remote prefixes, security controls, MTU, NAT and asymmetric routing can all create failures. Strong troubleshooting begins by defining the expected path and then validating each dependency rather than rebuilding the tunnel immediately.
Direct Connect introduces additional design choices such as redundancy, virtual interfaces and interaction with VPN backup. Professional networking judgment means matching the level of resilience to the business requirement. Two connections that share a physical dependency do not provide the same protection as truly diverse paths, and a backup path that has never been tested may fail exactly when it is needed.
Network Implementation tests execution across accounts and regions
Network Implementation represents 26% of scored content. AWS explicitly includes routing and connectivity between on-premises networks and AWS, multi-account and multi-region patterns, complex hybrid DNS, and automation of network infrastructure. Candidates should therefore be able to move from an architecture diagram to concrete behavior: which routes propagate, where attachments belong, how DNS queries flow, and how configuration is created consistently.
Automation matters because large networks cannot be managed reliably through ad hoc console changes. Infrastructure as code, repeatable configuration and controlled deployment reduce drift and make review easier. The exam does not require every automation tool in the AWS portfolio, but candidates should understand why declarative, repeatable network changes are preferable to manual one-off edits in environments with many accounts and regions.
DNS and traffic management are resilience tools
DNS is more than mapping a name to an address. Route 53 routing policies, health checks, public and private hosted zones, resolvers and hybrid forwarding rules can determine where users and applications connect during normal operation and failure. A deeper look atRoute 53 and cloud DNS helps connect record design to availability, but exam questions may require reasoning about split-horizon namespaces, resolver endpoints, forwarding rules and the effect of TTLs on recovery.
Edge and traffic-management services also affect performance. CloudFront, Global Accelerator and Elastic Load Balancing solve different problems. The correct choice depends on protocol, caching needs, user geography, endpoint health, security controls and how traffic should enter the architecture. Candidates should avoid choosing a service simply because it sounds “global”; they should match the service behavior to the application requirement.
Management and Operations turns topology into a supportable service
Network Management and Operation accounts for 20% of scored content. This domain covers maintaining routing and connectivity, monitoring network health, troubleshooting performance and resolving complex connectivity problems. The operational challenge is that many failures produce similar symptoms. A user who cannot reach an application might be affected by DNS, routing, NACLs, security groups, endpoint policies, firewall inspection, load-balancer health, BGP advertisements or the application itself.
Good troubleshooting is evidence-based. Determine the expected source, destination and path. Check routing and name resolution. Verify security controls. Use logs and metrics to see whether traffic reaches each layer. Compare a failing flow with a known-good flow where possible. This approach is slower than guessing for the first minute and much faster than changing several network components without a hypothesis.
Observability should also be designed in advance. VPC Flow Logs, CloudWatch metrics, load-balancer logs, Route 53 health information and other telemetry are more useful when teams know what question each source can answer. Logging everything without a retention, analysis or alerting plan can create cost without improving supportability.
Security, Compliance and Governance remain network responsibilities
The fourth domain, Network Security, Compliance and Governance, carries 24% of scored content. AWS expects candidates to implement and maintain controls that meet security requirements, validate and audit those controls through monitoring and logging, and maintain confidentiality of network communications. This places security directly inside the networking role.
Security groups and network ACLs provide filtering at different layers, while AWS Network Firewall, WAF, Shield and inspection architectures address additional threat models. PrivateLink and VPC endpoints can reduce public exposure for service access. TLS and IPsec protect communications in different contexts. The exam can ask candidates to choose a design that preserves both required access and evidence for compliance, not merely the design with the most controls.
Multi-account governance adds another dimension. Centralized networking can simplify inspection and connectivity, but it also creates shared dependencies. Distributed models can improve autonomy but increase consistency challenges. Candidates should understand the blast-radius and operational implications of each model rather than treating centralization as automatically better.
AWS networking services must be treated as a toolkit
Production environments rarely depend on one networking service. Reviewing theAWS networking toolkit is useful because advanced scenarios combine VPC constructs with load balancers, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, VPNs, Route 53, CloudFront, Global Accelerator, PrivateLink, network security services and monitoring. The exam often rewards the smallest combination that satisfies all stated requirements.
Service limits and operational complexity matter too. Adding another transit layer, NAT path or inspection hop can solve one problem while increasing latency, cost or troubleshooting difficulty. Advanced candidates should be able to explain not only what a service enables but what new dependency it introduces.
Current mechanics and the retirement deadline shape preparation
ANS-C01 currently contains 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions and allows 170 minutes. AWS lists the exam at the Specialty level and notes the December 31, 2026 retirement date. The current guide weights the domains as Network Design 30%, Network Implementation 26%, Network Management and Operation 20%, and Network Security, Compliance and Governance 24%.
The retirement date changes preparation strategy. Candidates with strong networking and AWS experience may have enough time to close focused gaps and schedule before year-end. Candidates who are still learning basic routing, VPC concepts or hybrid networking should be realistic about whether rushing the specialty produces lasting skill. AWS states that no new Advanced Networking – Specialty certifications will be issued after retirement and directs learners to its ongoing networking training portfolio rather than promising an automatic successor exam.
Use architecture drills and failure scenarios to prepare
Build or diagram several recurring patterns: a multi-account hub-and-spoke network, hybrid connectivity with redundant paths, centralized inspection, private service access, cross-region connectivity and public applications with global traffic management. For each design, state the routes, DNS behavior, security boundaries, failure modes and monitoring evidence. Then change one requirement and see whether the architecture still holds.
Failure drills are equally valuable. Withdraw a route, break a resolver rule, misconfigure a security group, create an unhealthy target or alter a BGP advertisement. Trace the symptoms and use logs or metrics to identify the cause. These exercises mirror the exam’s real difficulty: many AWS networking services are easy to define, but complex environments require judgment about how they interact.
ANS-C01 remains a demanding and relevant networking assessment during its final exam window. Candidates who can reason from requirements to topology, implement the path, observe its behavior and secure it under change will be far better prepared than those who memorize isolated service descriptions.

We don't say that these free VCEs sent by our members aren't reliable (experience shows that they are). But you should use your critical thinking as to what you download and memorize.
