ICF Credentials in 2026: ACC, PCC, MCC, Exams, and Renewal

The International Coaching Federation structures its professional coaching credentials around three experience levels: Associate Certified Coach, Professional Certified Coach, and Master Certified Coach. In 2026, those credentials remain the central progression path for coaches who want formal validation of education, client experience, mentor coaching, ethical practice, coaching skill, and exam performance.

The ICF credentialing system is not a simple written-test program. Candidates must satisfy education and coaching-experience requirements before the written assessment becomes the final step. The differences among ACC, PCC, and MCC are therefore defined as much by demonstrated practice as by exam difficulty.

ACC, PCC, and MCC represent progressively deeper coaching experience

The Associate Certified Coach credential is the entry point in ICF’s main credential ladder. ICF currently requires at least 60 hours of coach-specific education, 100 hours of coaching experience, and 10 hours of mentor coaching. The experience requirement includes work with multiple clients, and ICF’s detailed rules distinguish paid from unpaid coaching hours.

The Professional Certified Coach credential raises those thresholds substantially. PCC applicants need at least 125 hours of coaching education, 500 hours of coaching experience, and 10 hours of mentor coaching. The intent is not merely to demonstrate more time in the profession but to show a stronger ability to partner with clients, apply the ICF Core Competencies, and coach at a more advanced professional standard.

The Master Certified Coach credential is the highest of the three. Candidates must currently hold or previously have held a PCC credential, complete at least 200 hours of coaching education, document 2,500 hours of coaching experience, and complete 10 hours of mentor coaching. The MCC path is therefore designed for established practitioners rather than candidates seeking an initial coaching qualification.

The ACC Exam is now a dedicated knowledge-based assessment

ICF uses a distinct written assessment for ACC candidates. The current ACC exam contains 60 multiple-choice questions, with four options and one correct answer for each item. It is delivered as a proctored computer-based exam through Pearson VUE, either at a testing center or through the OnVUE remote-proctoring platform where available.

The exam is scheduled for 90 minutes and is divided into two 30-question sections, with an optional 10-minute break between them. ICF reports ACC results on a scaled range from 200 to 600 and currently requires a score of 460 to pass. Candidates generally receive a preliminary result immediately after completing the exam, with the official result later added to their ICF record.

The content is divided into three broad areas. Coaching Ethics accounts for 30%, Definition and Boundaries of Coaching for another 30%, and Coaching Competencies, Strategies, and Techniques for 40%. This means ACC preparation needs to cover more than memorizing competency names. Candidates must understand confidentiality, conflicts of interest, professional boundaries, referral situations, coaching agreements, motivation, goal setting, and the practical meaning of the ICF Core Competencies.

PCC and MCC candidates face a different written assessment

PCC and MCC candidates do not take the ACC Exam. Their current written assessment is the ICF Credentialing Exam, which is built around the knowledge and judgment expected from more experienced professional coaches. It evaluates understanding of ICF’s definition of coaching, Core Competencies, and Code of Ethics while also asking candidates to apply those standards in realistic coaching situations.

There is an important 2026 transition underway. ICF has announced that beginning on November 10, 2026, PCC and MCC candidates will be able to take the updated PCC-MCC Exam. The redesigned assessment combines situational-judgment questions with direct knowledge-based questions. ICF has stated that the new format is intended to assess both applied decision-making and foundational coaching knowledge while reducing the amount of reading required by the current exam format.

Because September 2026 sits before that November 10 launch date, candidates should verify which written assessment applies to their application and testing date rather than relying on a preparation resource that assumes the transition has already occurred. Exam format is a time-sensitive part of the credentialing process.

ICF evaluates coaching skill as well as written knowledge

A defining feature of ICF credentialing is that written knowledge is only one part of the standard. Candidates also need to demonstrate actual coaching competence. Current ICF comparison materials list performance-evaluation requirements for the three primary credentials, with recordings assessed against the skill level expected for the credential.

The evaluation standard is different at each level. ACC coaching should demonstrate foundational use of the Core Competencies and ethical practice. PCC candidates are expected to show a more developed coaching partnership and stronger ability to work with the person of the client rather than simply solving a presented problem. MCC candidates are evaluated at the highest level of mastery, where the coaching relationship, awareness, listening, and client-led discovery should be consistently sophisticated.

ICF updated the Minimum Skills Requirements used for ACC and MCC evaluation beginning January 1, 2026. The PCC requirements were not substantively changed at that time, although ICF reformatted them for consistency. Candidates preparing recorded sessions should therefore use the current 2026 Minimum Skills Requirements rather than an older scoring interpretation.

Education pathways affect how the application is reviewed

ICF recognizes multiple application paths because coaching education can come from accredited programs or from combinations of accredited and non-accredited learning. ACC and PCC candidates who completed ICF-accredited Level 1 or Level 2 education generally have a more streamlined application route because the education has already been reviewed against ICF standards.

Portfolio applications require ICF to review the candidate’s education in greater detail. That can lengthen processing time and increase the amount of documentation required. This distinction explains why two coaches pursuing the same credential can face different application costs and estimated review times even when their coaching hours are similar.

Candidates should therefore organize evidence before starting the application. Useful records include certificates of coach-specific education, client coaching logs, mentor-coaching documentation, performance-evaluation recordings where required, and accurate dates for recent coaching experience. Building those records gradually is much easier than reconstructing them after hundreds of coaching hours have accumulated.

Experience requirements are precise, not approximate

ICF’s coaching-experience thresholds are minimum eligibility requirements, and the detailed rules matter. ACC candidates must document 100 coaching hours with at least eight clients, including 75 paid hours. ICF also requires a portion of those hours to be recent relative to the application date.

PCC candidates need 500 coaching hours with at least 25 clients, including 450 paid hours. MCC applicants need 2,500 coaching hours, including at least 2,250 paid hours. These numbers show why progressing from one credential to another normally takes meaningful professional practice rather than a short period of additional study.

The quality of recordkeeping matters because coaching experience is part of the credential, not merely a recommendation. A candidate who has completed enough hours but cannot document them appropriately may still face application problems. Coaches planning a future PCC or MCC application should maintain a consistent client log from the beginning of their practice.

Ethics and boundaries deserve dedicated exam preparation

New coaches sometimes focus heavily on questioning techniques while underestimating ethics and scope of practice. ICF’s ACC blueprint assigns 30% of the written exam to Coaching Ethics and another 30% to Definition and Boundaries of Coaching. That weighting reflects the professional risks involved when coaching is confused with therapy, counseling, consulting, mentoring, or another helping profession.

Candidates should be able to identify conflicts of interest, explain confidentiality and its limits, recognize when referral is appropriate, and distinguish a coaching conversation from advice-giving or clinical intervention. They should also understand contracting: what the coach and client are agreeing to, what success means, how responsibilities are shared, and how the engagement can be revisited when goals or circumstances change.

Scenario practice is particularly useful because ethical questions often involve competing considerations rather than obvious misconduct. Strong preparation asks not just “Which rule applies?” but “What response best protects the client, the coaching relationship, and the professional standard?”

Credential renewal makes continuing development part of the profession

ICF credentials are renewed every three years. ACC, PCC, and MCC credential-holders generally need 40 Continuing Coach Education credits during each renewal cycle. At least 24 credits must be in Core Competencies, and at least three of those must address coaching ethics.

ACC renewal has an additional mentor-coaching component: 10 hours of mentor coaching are required and count toward the Core Competency credits. PCC and MCC renewal do not use the same mandatory mentor-coaching requirement, although qualifying mentor coaching and coaching supervision may count toward professional development under ICF rules.

ICF simplified parts of the renewal process in late 2025. Credential-holders no longer have to upload documentation for every CCE activity with every routine renewal application, although ICF can select applications for audit and request proof. The practical lesson is to keep documentation even when it is not submitted automatically.

Candidates also need to distinguish current rules from announced future rules. ICF has stated that beginning April 1, 2027, ACC and PCC Portfolio applicants will no longer satisfy competence evaluation through the current performance-evaluation process. Instead, they will use an enhanced mentor-coaching requirement delivered by appropriately trained mentor coaches.

That change does not mean a September 2026 candidate can ignore the present application requirements. It means people whose applications will fall into the 2027 system should monitor ICF’s transition guidance carefully. The same principle applies to the November 2026 PCC-MCC Exam launch: announced future changes should not be described as if they are already in force.

ICF is also expanding specialization pathways around areas such as team coaching, mentor coaching, and coaching supervision. These are useful extensions for experienced practitioners, but they do not replace the core ACC, PCC, and MCC progression. A specialization should be chosen because it reflects a real area of practice, not because it appears to offer a shortcut around the experience requirements of the primary credentials.

Choose the credential level that matches demonstrated practice

ACC is the natural target for a newer coach who has completed foundational education and begun building a client base. PCC suits practitioners with significantly more coaching experience who want to demonstrate a mature professional standard. MCC is intended for highly experienced coaches who have already progressed through PCC and can demonstrate mastery over a long record of practice.

The preparation sequence should follow that structure. First confirm eligibility, then organize education and experience records, review the current Minimum Skills Requirements, prepare the required performance evidence, and study the written exam that applies to the exact credential and testing date. For PCC and MCC candidates testing around the November 10, 2026 transition, verifying the applicable exam version is especially important.

ICF credentialing is rigorous because it treats coaching as a practiced profession rather than a body of theory. The written exam matters, but so do client hours, mentor coaching, observed competence, ethics, and continuing education. The strongest candidate is therefore not simply the person who studies the most questions; it is the coach whose preparation connects the official standards to consistent professional behavior in real coaching relationships.
