Microsoft formerly offered the Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert credential with exam MB-335, but retired both on June 30, 2026. The active subject-specific path in October 2026 is Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Associate, associated with MB-330. The historical Expert qualification should not be denied, or presented as newly obtainable.

This distinction matters to employers and candidates. A consultant who earned the former Expert certification may describe it accurately with its dates and credential status, while a new candidate should study the available Associate syllabus and the professional skills required for senior delivery responsibility. The current certification name, historical credential, exam code and hands-on consulting capability are four different claims that should not be blurred together.

What the associate certification actually validates

Microsoft describes functional consultants as professionals who translate customer requirements into Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management configurations and business processes. The work spans product information management, procurement and sales, inventory and asset management, warehouse management, transportation, master planning and related processes.

Check the date on the exam blueprint before allocating learning hours. Microsoft has announced an MB-330 skills-measured update effective October 21, 2026, which is later than this article’s October 8 review date. An exam attempted before that change and one taken after it may be aligned to different outline versions. Reassess the domain weights and any named features close to the actual test date, especially if a study provider has already switched its materials to the future outline.

The distinction between the historical Expert path and the active Associate path changes a candidate’s plan. Microsoft formerly awarded Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert through exam MB-335 and its associated requirements, but retired the Expert credential and MB-335 on June 30, 2026. The current MB-330 exam instead supports the Associate certification for functional consultants. Its published requirements concentrate on operational configuration and process delivery; candidates should never claim a new Associate award is equivalent to holding the retired Expert badge.

An MB-330 candidate needs to understand how settings interact. Configuring a warehouse location directive without understanding reservation behavior, replenishment and mobile workflows may produce a screen that appears correct but an operation that stalls under load.

The current official exam outline—not a third-party course name—should govern the study scope. Microsoft can revise objectives; candidates should check the dated skills outline before scheduling and distinguish released material from future changes that have not yet taken effect.

Business-process discovery comes before system configuration

A consultant begins by identifying the organization’s actual flows: purchase requisition to purchase order, receipt to put-away, demand planning to production or fulfillment, and inventory reservation to shipment. A process map should identify the people making decisions, the system events recording them and the exceptions that must be handled.

The most effective discovery workshop follows a real transaction and asks each participant what they need to know or approve. For procure-to-pay, capture the sequence from requisition and vendor selection to purchase order, receipt, invoice matching and payment handoff. Identify exceptional states such as partial receipt, purchase-order change and disputed invoice. A consultant should be able to map these states to data structures and responsibilities before specifying screens or customizations. Otherwise an attractive configuration can mask a workflow that fails when an ordinary exception occurs.

For example, a retailer may hold inventory across distribution centers and stores, accept returns through several channels and transfer stock among locations. The consultant must model legal entities, sites, warehouses, inventory dimensions and transaction states before choosing detailed configuration.

Requirements need prioritization. A stakeholder may request a screen customization when standard functionality, a warehouse configuration change or revised process ownership would achieve the underlying goal more reliably.

Product information, procurement and inventory

Product masters, released products, units of measure, inventory dimensions and tracking dimensions influence what can be ordered, stored and shipped. Errors in these foundations spread into purchasing, costing, manufacturing and reporting. Consultants should test common products as well as edge cases such as batch-controlled, serialized and configurable items.

Inventory dimensions are easy to underestimate. Site and warehouse may determine where stock is held, while batch, serial, location and license-plate tracking can govern how that stock is reserved or issued. Set up a test product with realistic unit conversions and trace its quantities through purchase receipt, quality hold, transfer and sales allocation. Confirm that on-hand, available and reserved quantities behave as intended at each step. A design that produces the right total inventory but loses traceability is not acceptable for a regulated or serialized product.

Procurement involves vendor records, purchase agreements, approval policy, matching, receiving and invoice reconciliation. A useful end-to-end test follows one order through receipt, exception handling and financial handoff while checking how inventory availability changes.

Inventory design requires clarity about physical stock, reserved stock, available stock and in-transit quantities. These numbers differ for valid reasons. A consultant who cannot explain the difference may optimize a dashboard without fixing the underlying business process.

Warehouse operations and transportation

Warehouse management connects locations, work templates, waves, load building, mobile device menus and labor execution. Configuration choices affect whether an associate can pick the right stock, replenish a forward location and recover from a failed scan. Simulate a normal order as well as shortages, substitutions and partial shipments.

Warehouse configuration should be tested against the physical movement of goods, not just against an inventory ledger. When a mobile device directs a picker, the work template and location directive must send the worker to usable stock. Replenishment needs to occur early enough to prevent line-item delays. Test a wrong-location scan, an unavailable pallet and a partially filled load, then check whether the workflow recovers without incorrect stock adjustments. For transportation, verify that the system captures load, carrier and shipping-status events at the point where responsibility changes.

Transportation and shipping add carrier, route, load and rate considerations. The exact feature set depends on the implementation scope and integrations. Keep responsibilities explicit where external transportation platforms or third-party logistics partners participate.

Mobile warehouse workflows deserve real device testing. A process may pass in a browser while failing on a handheld device because of network conditions, label configuration, scan formats or permission boundaries.

Planning, manufacturing and asset management

Master planning balances demand, supply, lead times, calendars and capacity. The result is only as trustworthy as the replenishment rules, supplier lead times, on-hand data and forecasting assumptions. Test what changes when a vendor delay or demand spike occurs rather than judging the plan only when inputs are ideal.

Master planning is highly sensitive to calendars, demand assumptions, lead times, supply policies and exception handling. A scheduled plan can produce mathematically consistent proposals that an operations team cannot execute because a supplier will not deliver on a nonworking day or a production line has restricted capacity. Compare forecasted demand with the generated purchase and production orders, inspect action messages and conduct a what-if test after altering a lead time. This turns planning knowledge into a controlled explanation of operational consequences.

Manufacturing scenarios can involve bills of materials, routes, production orders, quality checks and material consumption. Consultants should distinguish what Dynamics 365 manages directly from plant-floor systems or custom integration processes.

Asset management connects equipment records, maintenance planning and work orders. It intersects with purchasing and inventory when repairs require spare parts. A reliable configuration keeps these transactions consistent and supports later audit.

Data migration, integrations and solution governance

A successful implementation depends on a dependable data migration strategy. Define ownership for master records and transaction history, map each source field to the target model, and verify uniqueness, completeness and referential integrity. Do not assume that loading a row into a staging entity proves it represents a usable operational record.

Data migration quality should be measured with reconciliations, not just successful import-job completion. Validate product masters, vendors, customers, open purchase orders, inventory balances, dimensions and financial impacts in a representative migrated company. Identify who owns data cleanup and how exceptions are resolved. For integrations, test both normal messages and repeated or out-of-order events; a downstream logistics system must not create duplicate shipments because it received a retried confirmation. Clear ownership of monitoring and recovery is part of a sound implementation.

Integration design should specify APIs, batch jobs or events as appropriate to the system, with retry behavior, error queues, identity controls and monitoring. A failed integration can leave inventory or order status inconsistent; reconciliation is therefore part of design, not an afterthought.

Consultants should collaborate with solution architects, developers, finance leads and users. They need enough technical fluency to recognize when custom code introduces future maintenance risk, while still owning functional acceptance criteria and business-process tests.

From certification to senior consulting competence

The Associate designation confirms a defined assessment level; it does not mean every holder can architect a complex global rollout without supervision. Conversely, experienced consultants may operate at an expert level professionally whether or not they previously earned the now-retired Expert credential.

An experienced consultant should show how competing requirements were resolved. A warehouse team may want maximum traceability while sales teams demand fast order entry; finance may require strict inventory valuation while planners want flexible substitutions. The consultant’s job is to make these conflicts visible, quantify consequences and document approvals. A genuinely senior portfolio describes the before-and-after operational process, the configuration decisions, the tests of failure conditions and the measured outcome—not simply the number of Dynamics menu areas visited.

Build a portfolio around measurable scenarios: inventory accuracy, warehouse throughput, planning exception reduction, lead-time reliability and successful exception handling. Document assumptions, configuration changes, test evidence and user adoption rather than only recording completed training modules.

For current credential details, consult Microsoft Learn for MB-330 and its renewal requirements. Associate, expert and specialty badges have different naming, and certification status should be quoted exactly when representing qualifications to clients or employers.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management supports procurement, inventory, warehouse operations, manufacturing planning and transportation.
