It is tempting to describe the transition as moving from an old interface to a prettier one, but that misses the operational consequences. Record pages, custom actions, automation, component compatibility, user permissions, and mobile experiences all affect whether a sales or service team can actually complete its work after a change. A successful update measures the behaviour of important tasks, not simply whether a user can open the homepage.

The modern Lightning App Builder allows administrators to create custom app pages, home pages and record pages from components. A record page can present important information differently for particular apps, profiles, record types and device form factors, subject to the available platform controls. This flexibility is valuable when one group needs quick access to sales pipeline signals and another needs service history, but indiscriminate customisation can create inconsistent user experiences and a maintenance burden.

The practical objective is to match user tasks to a clear information design. A service agent opening a case should see priority, customer context, escalation history and next action without searching across unrelated tabs. A sales representative might need contact information, opportunity stage, recent activities and required approvals. Build the page around the decision the person must make, then validate it with representative users.

Understand what belongs in a Lightning page

Lightning pages are composed of regions and components, including standard platform components and custom components where supported. Administrators can add related lists, activities, highlights, tabs and other features, then configure when and where they appear. The page itself does not replace the need for sensible object relationships, data quality, record types, security controls and business processes. A visually polished component cannot compensate for inconsistent underlying data.

Dynamic Forms can let administrators position fields and field sections directly on supported Lightning record pages and set conditional visibility. Availability depends on the object and form factor, so do not assume every object can be migrated identically. Salesforce’s official training warns that universal required fields may need careful attention during migration: a form that looks cleaner but prevents records being saved is a functional regression.

Test field visibility and editability separately. Hiding a component to simplify a screen does not grant or revoke data permissions. Object permissions, field-level security, record sharing, and appropriate access controls remain decisive. A sensitive field should be protected by the security model, not merely hidden from the user’s preferred page layout.

Review custom code and integrations before changing the experience

Older organisations may rely on custom Visualforce pages, JavaScript buttons, URL hacks, browser extensions or third-party packages built around Classic-era behaviours. The correct review asks which customisations remain supported and whether each workflow behaves properly in Lightning. Some Visualforce content can be incorporated through supported components; some features require replacement or redesign. Compatibility must be determined against the exact implementation and current Salesforce documentation rather than a general promise that everything transfers automatically.

Integrations add their own risks. An app may depend on field API names, validation rules, record updates, identity flows, or automation that is independent of the interface. A UI project can reveal that the underlying data model is poorly governed, but it should not silently change integration contracts. Inventory connected applications and identify critical automations before introducing major record-page changes.

When a replacement is needed, define the target business outcome first. An old custom button used to create a follow-up task may be replaced with a supported action or Flow, but the new process must preserve essential validation, ownership and audit behaviour. Test with different permission levels and realistic records; administrator testing alone may conceal the problems ordinary users encounter.

Automation should reduce effort without obscuring accountability

Flow and other Salesforce automation capabilities can help standardise work such as record updates, notifications and guided user interactions. However, overlapping workflows, poorly bounded triggers and unintended recursive updates can make a Lightning implementation fragile. Each automated action should have a clear owner, triggering condition, expected data effects, error handling and a way to observe failures.

A sales process may require manager approval when a discount exceeds a threshold. An automation should enforce the policy reliably, explain the status to the representative and provide an audit trail. A service workflow might assign a case based on product and severity while preserving a manual escalation path for exceptional situations. The design must also handle incomplete data and permissions that prevent an update.

Review the automation inventory whenever a record page, object or field is modified. The screen may look correct while a backend process fails after save. Tests should verify final records and associated notifications, not just whether a component reports success.

Treat a Classic-to-Lightning transition as a targeted migration

Organisations that still have Classic-dependent processes need a migration plan based on their specific features and users. The decision to upgrade to Salesforce Lightning should follow the dependencies and workflows that need to change, not a generic assumption that every team is already ready. Salesforce retired its older Lightning Adoption apps, including the Transition Assistant, Configuration Converter and Readiness Check, in 2025 for affected Spring ’25 and later environments. An old tutorial telling administrators to rely on one of these tools is no longer an adequate current procedure. Use current platform documentation and direct assessment of the actual organisation instead.

Start with a workflow inventory: critical objects, user groups, custom pages, integrations, reports, dashboards, automations and mobile use. Identify which functions already work in Lightning, which need testing and which require remediation. Sequence changes by business risk; a rarely used administrative screen does not deserve the same release controls as the case-routing workflow used continuously by a support team.

Pilot changes with representative users and realistic data. Ask them to complete common tasks in the target experience while recording delays, missing information, unexpected permissions and changed navigation. Pilot success should be measurable: completion rates, quality of resulting records, support tickets and the ability to perform important exceptions. Do not substitute a training attendance count for evidence that the workflow still works.

Configure record pages for maintainability

Customisation is most effective when it follows a design system shared across teams. Use standard patterns for essential fields, primary actions, warnings and activity timelines. Resist giving every department a completely different layout for the same object unless its responsibilities genuinely require the difference. Page assignments by app, record type and profile are powerful, but too many combinations can become difficult to test and troubleshoot.

Record an owner and purpose for significant components. A page that contains an obsolete embedded dashboard or an unmaintained third-party extension can slow users and complicate upgrades. Periodically remove unused fields and components after confirming they are not required by downstream processes or data exports. Configuration changes should move through a managed deployment process with version control or other reliable change records where practical.

Mobile behaviour deserves direct review. The fact that a component works on a desktop does not guarantee that it is equally usable on a phone, and some features have distinct form-factor support. Test actual workflows on representative devices, particularly for field sales, on-site service and other roles that frequently work away from a desk.

Data quality, security and adoption are interdependent

A more visible pipeline dashboard is valuable only if opportunity stages and expected close dates are maintained consistently. A case page showing a customer’s account history becomes unreliable when relationships or ownership fields are wrong. Governance should identify the small set of fields that matter to reporting and workflow decisions, establish validation that supports rather than blocks users, and explain why the data is needed.

Security must be checked at object, record and field levels for every meaningful user group. Least privilege should survive interface changes. A user should not receive broad access merely to make a new component load successfully. Likewise, replacing a trusted process with one that relies on sharing screenshots or manually exporting spreadsheets may introduce avoidable privacy and audit risks.

Adoption improves when changes remove friction from real tasks. Short demonstrations, role-specific examples, office-hour support and prompt correction of early defects can outperform a long generic training campaign. Collect evidence from customer support, sales operations and administrators to decide which page adjustments are genuinely useful rather than chasing novel visual features.

Measure outcomes and keep the platform current

A Lightning improvement project should define a few indicators before implementation. These might include the time required to complete a service case, the number of manual steps in a sales workflow, the rate of invalid records, the number of support requests linked to the new experience, or the percentage of critical customisations tested successfully. Compare results after deployment and distinguish user learning effects from persistent functional defects.

Salesforce releases and product naming evolve. Platform features may gain new capabilities or restrictions, and legacy tools can be withdrawn. Maintain a documented release review so page assignments, integrations, security, automation and training guidance remain accurate. Use the current Salesforce release notes and first-party training materials when deciding whether a particular feature is available in the organisation’s edition.

Teams exploring broader Salesforce skills should connect knowledge of the platform to concrete administration outcomes: secure data access, workable record designs, reliable automation, testable integrations and a consistent user experience. The enduring value of Lightning is not simply that the interface looks modern. It lies in configuring the platform so that people can find relevant information, complete their work with fewer mistakes, and operate within controls the business can explain and maintain.

Salesforce Lightning is an application platform, not just a redesigned screen Salesforce Lightning Experience changed how users navigate records and how administrators assemble workflows, pages, and components.
