The name “GMAT Focus Edition” remains a useful historical reference: the redesign was introduced in 2023 and replaced the old combination of Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Candidates using older books need to distinguish that previous edition from the exam they can schedule today. This article explains the current structure rather than presenting the Focus Edition as a separate, newly bookable examination.

The current GMAT has 64 questions over two hours and 15 minutes of scored testing, divided into three 45-minute sections. Quantitative Reasoning contains 21 questions, Verbal Reasoning 23 and Data Insights 20. A candidate may select the order of the sections and take one optional ten-minute break after either the first or second section. These details should guide timed preparation because a book that allots 21 questions to every section is not describing the present exam.

Quantitative Reasoning tests decisions with numbers

Quantitative Reasoning emphasizes arithmetic and elementary algebra rather than advanced mathematics. Candidates must translate a business or numerical situation into useful relationships, avoid unnecessary calculation and recognize whether an answer is consistent with the constraints. A problem about successive price changes, for example, requires multiplying change factors rather than adding percentages. A question about overlapping groups requires representing who belongs to each set, not assuming that separate counts can be added.

The section consists of 21 Problem Solving questions in 45 minutes. It does not include a calculator, and geometry is not listed as a current quantitative domain. Someone moving from a legacy GMAT book should therefore distinguish useful arithmetic practice from time-consuming geometry drills that no longer correspond to the official content description. Mental estimation, sign checks and simple algebraic manipulation are more transferable than memorizing a large collection of unused formulas.

Verbal Reasoning centers on arguments and passages

The 23 Verbal Reasoning questions measure Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Reading Comprehension requires identifying what the author establishes, what is only suggested and why particular details appear in a passage. Critical Reasoning starts from short arguments and asks candidates to judge the relationship between premises and conclusions. A strong answer changes the logic in the direction demanded by the question; a statement that merely shares the subject matter is not enough.

Sentence Correction was assessed on an earlier GMAT edition but is not part of the current Verbal section. That does not make precise reading irrelevant: words such as “most,” “some” and “unless” still determine what an argument logically permits. During preparation, candidates should label conclusions and assumptions in sample arguments and then explain why competing answer choices do not answer the question actually asked. This analysis builds understanding instead of making performance depend on recognizing familiar wording.

Data Insights combines reasoning with digital information

Multi-Source Reasoning requires the candidate to reconcile information from multiple tabs or documents rather than extracting one number from a single table. A proposal might state a business growth target in one source while another shows a cost estimate for a shorter reporting period. If the denominators, dates or units are inconsistent, the mathematically correct computation can still support the wrong conclusion. Practicing these items should include checking how each source defines its values before attempting the arithmetic.

Data Insights has 20 questions in 45 minutes, and an on-screen calculator is available in this section. Its five question types are Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis. The common requirement is to decide what available information means and what conclusion follows from it. The source may be a chart, a tabular display, several interlinked text documents or a quantitative relationship.

Data Sufficiency rewards judging whether a statement provides enough information to determine an answer, not necessarily computing that answer. Table Analysis can demand sorting and comparison across multiple columns; Multi-Source Reasoning tests whether conflicting claims from different documents can be reconciled. Candidates should practice moving accurately between text, units, numbers and logical qualifications. Because these questions often present more material than a single step requires, they reward selecting relevant evidence before calculating anything.

Computer adaptation, question review and timing

The GMAT uses computer-adaptive scoring, and a final result reflects more than a simple percentage of correct responses. Question characteristics, response accuracy and unanswered items affect score calculation. It is misleading to infer a fixed total score from the raw number of questions answered correctly or to assume the same incorrect answer has an identical scoring effect across all test experiences.

The current Question Review & Edit feature permits a candidate to bookmark questions and, after completing all questions in a section with time remaining, review the section and change up to three responses. This is not an unrestricted second attempt at every question. Efficient pacing is still necessary, and the candidate must understand which question is worth revisiting rather than spending valuable time repeatedly reconsidering low-confidence guesses. During mock tests, practice using the feature under the same time limit and decide in advance what evidence would justify changing an answer.

A practical timing rehearsal should reproduce the whole section, not a series of isolated untimed questions. In Quantitative Reasoning, ask whether the calculation is necessary or whether estimation rules out most answers; in Verbal Reasoning, write a five-word description of the conclusion before considering the options; in Data Insights, check the units and filters before calculating. Record the questions that consumed too much time even when answered correctly. Those slow successes can be the reason an otherwise well-prepared candidate runs out of time. When reviewing a simulated section, distinguish misunderstanding the question from choosing a good method too slowly, because the fixes differ.

Understanding the score report

Total scores range from 205 to 805 in ten-point increments, with every total ending in five. Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights section scores range from 60 to 90; the three contribute equally to the total. Percentile rankings put scores in the context of a defined test-taking population and can change when GMAC recalibrates the reference data. A familiar number from the old 200–800 scale therefore does not carry the same meaning on the redesigned 205–805 scale.

GMAC’s official report provides more than the four score values. Performance information by section, content area, question type and timing can distinguish a conceptual weakness from a pacing problem. For example, recurring mistakes on Multi-Source Reasoning suggest an evidence-integration issue, whereas a high early-section accuracy followed by many late guesses points toward time allocation. A useful retake plan should start from those differences, not from an undifferentiated goal to complete more practice questions.

A GMAT score report should be interpreted alongside a candidate’s educational goals. A high score in one section can coexist with a lower section score, and a total number hides that shape. If a target program publishes a current class profile, check whether the report describes the accepted GMAT edition, the date of the incoming cohort and the range rather than only an average. That comparison is a starting point for school research, not a promise of admission. When a retake is considered, compare the practice trend and section-specific errors against the time available before application deadlines. A retake without an evidence-based improvement plan is more likely to repeat the same bottleneck.

Preparing with the currently assessed format

Begin by taking one official practice assessment under a full 135-minute schedule. Then classify every error according to both its content and cause: an arithmetic operation, a logical assumption, misreading a table, choosing an extreme answer, or running out of time. Grouping mistakes this way makes the next study session specific. A learner who is quick but often misses conditional language needs a different intervention from a learner who reasons accurately but takes too long to translate problems into equations.

Build practice around official question-type definitions. For quantitative work, rehearse algebraic setup and estimation; for verbal work, articulate passage structure and argument gaps; for Data Insights, practice extracting evidence from several formats without allowing the interface to distract from the task. Periodically retake timed sections rather than only completing unlimited untimed drills. Use the official exam specification to verify question counts, score rules, question editing and any test-day restrictions at the point of booking.

Choosing the right exam date

The GMAT is scheduled by appointment, not from a single annual global calendar. A workable date follows from the application deadline, the time needed for official scoring and the possibility of a retake. Candidates should also check test-center versus online requirements, including identification, room conditions, permitted note-taking equipment and availability in their country. Fees and rescheduling charges may vary by location or mode, so a dated article is not a substitute for the live booking information in the candidate’s own exam account.

The practical objective is not to memorize the label “Focus Edition.” It is to demonstrate quantitative reasoning, reading and argument analysis, and the ability to interpret interconnected information within the exam’s actual time budget. A preparation plan built on the current GMAT specification reduces the risk of training for retired question types while preserving the valuable reasoning skills that earlier materials still teach.

GMAC now calls its shorter, three-section admission test simply the GMAT exam.
