Many schools explicitly accept both and ask applicants to choose the assessment that best represents their abilities. For example, INSEAD’s published MBA admissions guidance says it accepts GMAT and GRE without a preference, while HEC Paris accepts both for relevant management programs. Applicants should therefore begin with the current policy of each target school, not an assumed hierarchy between tests.

A choice that is appropriate for an MBA applicant may differ for a person also applying to economics, public policy or other graduate programs. Test format, preparation time, score strengths and reporting rules all influence the practical decision. The strongest application normally comes from meeting each program’s documented requirements with a credible score, rather than choosing a test on the basis of rumor.

Check which tests each target program actually accepts

Create a program-specific matrix before scheduling an exam. For each MBA or master’s program, record whether it accepts GMAT, GRE or either; whether a score is mandatory, optional or potentially eligible for a waiver; and how long results remain valid. Some schools publish minimums, others publish recommended ranges, and still others explicitly avoid a threshold. These statements mean different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Read the admissions requirements for the exact degree and intake. A school may have a full-time MBA, an executive MBA, a Master in Management and an MSc finance program with different testing policies. A blog post about a school’s general reputation is not sufficient evidence about the specific program’s current test requirement.

Understand the current GMAT’s three-section design

The current GMAT Exam lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes of testing, with three 45-minute sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights. Quant has 21 questions, Verbal has 23 and Data Insights has 20. The current total score ranges from 205 to 805, and each of the three sections contributes equally. The previous GMAT edition’s 200–800 scale and separate Integrated Reasoning and essay sections are historical, not features of the current test.

GMAT Quant emphasizes arithmetic and algebraic problem solving. Verbal focuses on Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Data Insights requires interpretation of tables, graphs and complex information and includes data-sufficiency tasks. Candidates who perform well when evaluating real-world information under a tight clock may find that combination appealing.

Understand what the GRE tests instead

The GRE General Test has separate Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores, plus an Analytical Writing score. Its verbal work includes text completion and sentence equivalence alongside reading comprehension; its quantitative work emphasizes mathematical reasoning, comparisons and problem solving. The test can be useful for applicants exploring disciplines beyond business schools as well as MBA programs that accept it.

The exams are not interchangeable question for question. A candidate with a strong vocabulary background might have a different experience on GRE verbal items than on GMAT critical reasoning. Another candidate might find the GMAT’s integrated data work a better demonstration of their strengths. Those differences are reasons to test your skills with realistic diagnostics, not reasons to assume one exam is universally easier.

Do not compare raw GMAT and GRE numbers

A 655 GMAT score and a GRE sum of verbal and quantitative scores do not share a numerical scale. Even the current GMAT’s 205–805 total cannot be compared directly with the former GMAT’s 200–800 total. To understand relative standing, use each issuer’s current score distribution and any official concordance guidance, then interpret the result in the context of the schools you’re applying to.

Programs may publish class median or middle-range scores. Treat those statistics as descriptions of a cohort, not guaranteed admissions thresholds. Work experience, undergraduate performance, essays, references and professional goals are also evaluated, and the precise weight differs by institution.

Run a diagnostic on each exam before deciding

Take a representative, timed diagnostic for each test using current official material where available. Keep the conditions consistent enough to make the comparison meaningful. Record accuracy by category, the time needed to finish and how far each result is from a practical target for your chosen schools.

Then look beyond the first result. A modest diagnostic gap may be easy to close when the errors come from familiar but rusty content. An apparently stronger score can be misleading if you repeatedly run out of time in a section or rely on lucky guesses. Choose the exam where you can build a reliable plan for improvement within the months you actually have.

Consider the application calendar and score reporting

Work backward from the first program deadline. Allow time for preparation, official score reporting and a possible retake. Review the current issuer policy before booking. GMAT testing is available at centers and online in eligible locations; both modes count toward the same retake limits. GRE locations and at-home eligibility should be checked through ETS rather than assumed from someone else’s experience.

Programs may have different rules for score submission, self-reporting and when official results must arrive. For example, INSEAD asks that scores be sent directly and gives cycle-specific guidance about when they must be available. Avoid taking a test so close to a deadline that a technical interruption or delayed report leaves no remedy.

Understand how a GMAT Superscore fits into the decision

In 2026 GMAC introduced a GMAT Superscore that combines the highest eligible Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights section scores across valid current-version attempts. It appears with qualifying official reports. Schools retain discretion over how they use that information, and it does not erase individual attempts or make the performance history irrelevant.

This is useful when evaluating a retake plan, but it is not a reason to sit the GMAT repeatedly without analysis. Each attempt has a cost, a waiting period and preparation demands. Applicants should confirm what each target program actually reviews and consider whether a clearer one-attempt performance may be a better use of their time.

Evaluate the entire application, not just the score

An applicant with three years of operational leadership and a coherent career plan may be a stronger candidate than someone with a higher test score and a less developed professional story. An applicant changing industries may benefit from an especially clear demonstration of quantitative readiness. The test is one evidence source in a broader decision.

Do not mistake historical test popularity for a current admissions preference. The same school that historically reported mostly GMAT results can now explicitly accept GRE results. Focus on published criteria for the exact program and use alumni anecdotes only as context, not policy.

A workable decision sequence.

First, list the programs and any testing constraints. Second, complete a current diagnostic for both eligible exams. Third, compare preparation effort, format fit and the likelihood of getting an appropriate score by the deadline. Fourth, choose one as the main target and reserve a sensible retake window. Finally, verify the score-sending instructions of every school rather than assuming that an automatically generated report fulfills its requirements.

The GMAT may be a good choice for a candidate who wants a management-focused assessment. The GRE may be better for a candidate whose strengths, deadlines or broader graduate plans point that way. Where a program accepts both without preference, the relevant question is which score can make the strongest credible contribution to your particular application.

When one exam supports a broader graduate-school plan.

A person applying to business school and to a public policy or science graduate degree can sometimes use a GRE result for more applications. That convenience matters only if the intended programs accept the same test and the score is competitive. A person focused exclusively on an MBA may instead prefer GMAT question types. The decision is about actual destinations and strengths, not the perceived status of the test name.

If you have already prepared extensively for one eligible exam, switching at the last minute can be costly. Compare the likely gain from switching with the time needed to relearn formats and take another diagnostic. A clear plan grounded in school acceptance rules is more useful than the unsupported belief that admissions officers secretly reward one score source.

Compare the cost of switching tests with the cost of improvement

Switching from GMAT to GRE, or the reverse, requires more than registering for a different exam. You may need to learn different quantitative conventions, verbal task types, testing navigation and timing strategies. Before switching, list which existing study skills transfer and which need a new preparation cycle. Take a current diagnostic and budget time for official score delivery, not only for the test appointment.

There is also an opportunity cost. Another month spent chasing a speculative testing advantage might be better used on applications, recommendation coordination, financial planning or a concrete professional project. Choose the exam only after comparing the entire application schedule and confirming that every target program accepts the planned result.

The GMAT has a long history in graduate management admissions, but that history does not establish that every MBA program prefers it to the GRE.
