The useful question for an IT buyer is not who “won” a rivalry. It is which delivery architecture can serve users, applications, identity requirements and recovery targets with measurable operational effort.

Ownership and product names also changed. Broadcom acquired VMware in 2023, but the former VMware End-User Computing business—including Horizon and Workspace ONE—subsequently became Omnissa. A buyer comparing products in October 2026 needs to distinguish the historical VMware brand from the current Omnissa workspace portfolio. A claim that Citrix displaced “VMware” everywhere would confuse this desktop-delivery competition with VMware’s separate infrastructure products.

Identify the actual technology boundary

For a remote application, users need an accessible application session, working identity integration, predictable performance and a supportable path back to the underlying data. A virtual desktop adds an operating-system environment, profile management, desktop image maintenance and often user-specific application requirements. A hypervisor, in contrast, primarily supplies the compute and virtualization foundation. Citrix DaaS and Omnissa Horizon compete for parts of the application-and-desktop-delivery decision; they should not be judged as interchangeable replacements for vSphere or vSAN.

Citrix’s earlier XenDesktop architecture illustrates how desktop brokering, session delivery and image administration evolved before current cloud-managed offerings. That legacy context is useful for migration discovery, but a XenDesktop-era guide cannot establish today’s control-plane responsibilities or entitlements. Inventory the product versions and operational dependencies currently in use before translating a historic comparison into a 2026 procurement decision.

Understand what became Omnissa after 2024

The former VMware End-User Computing division was separated from Broadcom and launched as independent Omnissa on July 1, 2024. Horizon and Workspace ONE belong to that business. As a result, many older migration articles use “VMware Horizon” to identify an installation, while current product evaluation and support planning should refer to the appropriate Omnissa product and contract. Do not assume that existing VMware infrastructure subscriptions automatically cover Horizon services or that a Horizon migration changes the licensing status of the underlying hypervisor.

This history matters to a team running older Horizon desktops on VMware infrastructure. The organization may own separate contracts and support paths for its VDI broker, vSphere environment, authentication services, backup tools and monitoring. In a migration, each party’s responsibility must be mapped explicitly. A failure that appears to users as “desktop unavailable” can originate in the broker, access gateway, profile store, directory services, hypervisor, network or application itself.

Compare where the control plane and workloads run

Citrix DaaS documentation describes a cloud-managed application-and-desktop-delivery service that can connect to workloads in public clouds or in an on-premises data center. Citrix operates significant management-plane components, while customers still manage the hosted applications, delivery machines, identities and resource locations. The workload location and management location are not necessarily the same. A cloud control plane does not mean that customer data or all desktop execution automatically moves into Citrix-managed infrastructure.

For a Citrix DaaS resource location, connectivity between the cloud-managed service and customer resources is a design dependency. Citrix’s resource-location guidance describes Cloud Connectors and customer-controlled resources such as Virtual Delivery Agents, Active Directory and virtualization or cloud hosts. Operators must plan connector availability, DNS, certificate trust, directory latency, network egress and deployment versioning. Control-plane outsourcing reduces some maintenance work but does not remove customer responsibility for workload resilience and access decisions.

For an Omnissa Horizon deployment, perform the same component-by-component inventory using the specific Horizon edition, deployment architecture and current vendor documentation. Compare where connection servers or cloud services, gateways, desktop images, profiles, identity connections and management data live. A choice that simplifies one component can increase dependencies elsewhere. The meaningful comparison is supported capability and recovery responsibility, not a marketing label such as “cloud-first.”

Test the application and user experience, not a vendor slogan

Remote desktop success depends on what people actually do. Test login time, application launch, reconnect behavior, latency under constrained bandwidth, video and audio workloads, peripheral redirection, printing and accessibility. An application that behaves well in a headquarters proof of concept may be unreliable across high-latency links or unmanaged devices. Compare the products using the same representative users, endpoints, network constraints and acceptance thresholds.

Profile handling is a major source of hidden failure. Validate whether desktop state, application preferences, cached credentials and redirected files survive ordinary logoff and a forced session interruption. Test roaming users, stale profiles, large profile stores and simultaneous sign-ins. A fast virtual desktop with corrupted or inconsistent state is not a successful delivery design. Measure the restoration and escalation process as well as normal performance.

Protocol features are relevant only if they solve a measured workload problem. Citrix HDX and the display/remoting capabilities of a Horizon deployment should be evaluated on the organization’s own traffic, device classes and support policies. Claims of universal superior graphics performance, session density or security need comparable, dated benchmarks. Marketing demonstrations and unverifiable customer-win stories are not substitutes for independently repeatable workload tests.

Define security and administration boundaries

Security design starts with identity providers, multifactor authentication, conditional access, privileged administration and least-privilege resource access. Then map which system enforces each control: workspace broker, access gateway, directory, hypervisor, endpoint or application. An identity-aware access product does not by itself guarantee zero trust. Device posture signals, session restrictions, data leakage rules and audit events must be implemented and tested against specific user flows.

A sensitive application may also require limitations on clipboard use, drive mapping, printing, screen capture or downloads. A policy that is available in a product but not applied consistently across all delivery paths creates an avoidable control gap. Evaluate how changes are approved, how policy conflicts are detected and how investigators can trace a user session to the underlying workload and authentication evidence without unnecessarily collecting personal data.

Platform security is ongoing operational work. Keep delivery agents, connectors, gateways, operating-system images and application dependencies within supported lifecycle boundaries. Patch and rollback plans should include administrative roles, service accounts and certificates. Do not rely on a broad vendor claim that its platform is “secure by default”; test whether the deployed configuration implements the controls the organization actually requires.

Availability, incident response and recovery remain decisive

Build the failure-domain map before promising uptime. Include identity and DNS dependencies, broker/control-plane availability, gateways, profile storage, hypervisor and storage failures, and regional cloud outages. Define recovery objectives per application rather than assuming that every desktop needs the same service level. A failure affecting a few single-session desktops may call for a different response than an outage of a shared application-serving farm.

Use controlled failure exercises. Disconnect a resource location, restart a delivery service, simulate a lost gateway or block a critical identity dependency where safe. Confirm what users see, which sessions continue, what data may be lost, how operators diagnose the fault and whether alternative resources actually accept new sessions. The recovery plan should identify explicit runbook owners and tested restoration paths.

Measure support quality through contract terms, support-scope boundaries, escalation availability and a documented test case rather than repeating anecdotes about one vendor’s post-acquisition staffing or queue times. Support and management responsibilities may differ by deployment edition, geography and contractual arrangement. Request the applicable support terms and service descriptions before treating sales claims as commitments.

Calculate comparable, complete costs

Separate the subscription or entitlement for application/desktop delivery from infrastructure costs, public-cloud consumption, endpoint management, licensing for Microsoft workloads, storage, connectivity, backup, professional services and administration. A cloud-managed control plane can reduce the burden of running some management components while leaving significant costs for hosted desktop capacity, storage and secure access. A simple per-user sticker price seldom captures all of these dimensions.

Use a three-year cost model for clearly defined user groups and workload profiles, but keep all inputs explicit and revisable. Include steady-state hours, peak concurrency, nonpersistent and persistent desktop ratios, idle resource shutdown policies, storage consumption, migration training and parallel-run cost. Ask each vendor or reseller for the current quote and confirm applicable entitlements; do not infer that one platform is categorically cheaper, more transparent or more popular based on unsourced market commentary.

Run a decision-oriented pilot and preserve migration options

Choose a small sample that represents the difficult work, not merely easy office applications. Include a high-latency remote user, a specialized peripheral, a regulated document workflow, a legacy application and an administrator who must troubleshoot a failed session. Define pass/fail criteria for login, application launch, reconnect, data access, profile integrity, support effort and recovery. Capture the software builds, chosen policies, licensing assumptions and network profile so another team can reproduce the findings.

Plan exit and rollback before changing production routing. Record image and application dependencies, user assignments, profile formats, certificates, authentication integration and the owner of each recovery step. During a phased migration, test coexistence between the incumbent and replacement access paths; do not assume identical file redirection, user-state behavior or application licensing. A proof of concept is incomplete until the migration and fallback risks are understood.

The durable lesson of the Citrix-versus-VMware narrative is a procurement method, not a claimed market victory. Citrix DaaS and today’s Omnissa Horizon should be compared for the actual digital-workspace problem, while VMware vSphere remains a distinct infrastructure decision. Evidence of user experience, policy enforcement, recoverability, operational ownership and contractual fit should decide which platform earns the workload.

The phrase “Citrix’s growth against VMware” describes a real shift in how organizations compare digital workspace platforms, but it can mislead if it treats application delivery, desktop virtualization and data-center hypervisors as the same market.
