The 220-1101 Core 1 exam was part of the V14 series paired with 220-1102. CompTIA introduced the V15 exams, 220-1201 and 220-1202, in March 2025. The former series has retired; candidates registering in 2026 should follow the current V15 objectives instead of mixing an older Core 1 book with a newer Core 2 test.

A useful comparison focuses on how the expected IT support role changed. The recurring foundations remain—devices, network connectivity, hardware, troubleshooting, operating systems, security, and operational practice—but newer objectives reflect how much support work now involves remote users, cloud services, mobile devices, modern security controls, and varied endpoint configurations.

The basic credential structure stayed consistent

A+ requires two exams in the same certification version: one Core 1 and one Core 2. Core 1 emphasizes hardware, networking, mobile devices, virtualization and cloud concepts, and troubleshooting. Core 2 covers operating systems, security, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures. Passing a Core 1 exam is not itself the complete A+ certification.

That pairing matters for historical materials. An old 220-1101 book can teach how to identify a failed SSD, configure a wireless client, or investigate DHCP failure, but it cannot establish that a candidate is prepared for every objective in 220-1201. Likewise, an old 220-1102 syllabus is not a safe substitute for 220-1202. A version mismatch creates gaps precisely where a candidate expects familiarity.

Hardware and device support still form the base

IT support professionals must understand components they can troubleshoot and replace: memory, storage, power, peripherals, display connections, expansion hardware, and the symptoms of common failures. Newer exam objectives do not erase those capabilities. They test them alongside more varied device environments and workflows, including mobile endpoint considerations and hardware decisions tied to business needs.

Practical study should compare symptoms rather than simply memorize product categories. A slow laptop might be limited by storage saturation, insufficient memory, an operating-system background process, or unstable network access. A good technician collects evidence that distinguishes those possibilities and changes one variable at a time.

Networking coverage is about diagnosis, not a cable glossary

The transition does not remove IPv4, wireless, DNS, DHCP, routing basics, or common ports from practical relevance. Support staff need to understand whether a user cannot connect to a local network, cannot resolve a name, cannot authenticate to a remote service, or is experiencing application-layer failure. These are different problems that may look identical to the person reporting them.

Use a lab with a router, switch, wireless client, and at least two devices. Break gateway settings and DNS resolution independently; inspect the results. Compare a device that has an address but no internet route with one that cannot obtain an address at all. This produces transferable troubleshooting competence regardless of exam version.

Compare an entire exam series, not isolated Core 1 numbers

A+ Core 1 does not by itself award CompTIA A+ certification. The full credential normally requires both exams from the same current series: 220-1201 for Core 1 and 220-1202 for Core 2. Candidates who have older study books should inspect the publication date and map every chapter against the current objective PDF. An old section about desktop peripherals may still be useful, while references to obsolete operating systems, management utilities or exam scoring should not be trusted without checking.

The A+ credential is ordinarily earned through a pair of exams from the same current series, not by combining a legacy Core 1 pass with a new-series Core 2 pass. An employer who sees 220-1101 or 220-1201 on an old transcript should also check the corresponding Core 2 version, expiration rules, and certificate status. The important curriculum comparison is between complete series: device hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting procedure, networking, security, and operational controls evolve together as the support role changes.

Core 1 continues to emphasize physical and virtual hardware, networking, mobile devices and structured troubleshooting. Core 2 complements it with operating systems, security, software troubleshooting and operational procedures. Study the crossover deliberately: diagnosing a wireless device may require both hardware checks and operating-system configuration; a user support case may involve account privileges as well as an application problem.

Build a support technician’s evidence trail

Rather than practicing only multiple-choice recall, use a collection of real support scenarios in a lab. A computer that cannot access a network needs a disciplined check of link state, addressing, DNS, gateway reachability and any policy enforcement; swapping settings randomly often hides the true cause. A slow workstation needs measurements of storage, CPU, memory, startup software and recent configuration changes before hardware is blamed.

Keep notes identifying the reported symptom, an initial hypothesis, the observation that confirmed or rejected it, the corrective action and the result. This workflow is central to support work and helps candidates handle CompTIA’s performance-based questions. When an exam question references a tool whose interface has changed, rely on the tested objective and the underlying function rather than assuming that a screenshot from an older 220-1101 course is still current.

Cloud and remote support receive modern treatment

Modern help desks work with remote desktops, identity systems, synchronization, cloud-based applications, virtual machines, and mobile devices. A technician may need to know whether a failure is local to one device, affects a user account, or reflects an upstream service. The current A+ blueprint incorporates these environments while continuing to test basic technical reasoning.

Practice with realistic tickets: a worker can open a web page but cannot access a remote corporate resource; a mobile device syncs over Wi-Fi but not cellular; a virtual machine starts but its application is unreachable. Work from observed symptoms through connectivity, identity, permissions, and application state rather than assuming every case requires reinstallation.

Security and operational procedure cannot be separated

Support personnel handle sensitive user accounts and devices. They need safe authentication practices, malware response basics, backups, least-privilege awareness, and judgment about when to escalate. Operational topics such as documentation, change approval, safety, data handling, and communicating with the user are part of technical competence rather than nontechnical extras.

A technician who resolves a workstation issue by granting broad permanent permissions may have restored service while creating a larger problem. A better solution documents the needed authorization, applies a narrowly scoped change, and verifies that the issue is resolved without unwanted access expansion.

Map old preparation material to current objectives

Start by downloading the official CompTIA 220-1201 and 220-1202 objectives for the exams you plan to schedule. Compare each major domain to your existing V14 notes and mark three categories: still directly useful, needs an updated tool or terminology, and not yet covered. This audit prevents false confidence from completing an old course.

Use the current objectives to decide what to practice, not arbitrary lists of rumored questions. Full practice exams should reflect the new series and provide explanations for why answers are right or wrong. Experience troubleshooting a real system, or a controlled virtual lab, provides the evidence needed to answer scenario and performance-based questions.

What an A+ candidate should do in 2026

Study and schedule 220-1201 Core 1 and 220-1202 Core 2 as one matching pair. Treat 220-1101 and 220-1102 as historical references, useful for durable fundamentals but not current registration targets. Verify version availability, locale, and official requirements directly with CompTIA because exam catalogs change.

The lasting point of an A+ comparison is not that everything has been reinvented. It is that desktop support now spans local hardware, networks, cloud dependencies, identity, mobility, and security. Learning to isolate failures across those layers prepares a candidate for both the certification and the work.

CompTIA A+ is still an entry-level certification for IT support, but 220-1101 and 220-1201 belong to different exam generations.
