Since May 6, 2024, VMware by Broadcom has removed mandatory training and prior-certification prerequisites for VCP, VCAP and Specialist certifications; the same announcement standardized exam pricing for those levels and VCTA. Earlier versions of the program did impose training or other prerequisites for some candidates; the change matters precisely because an old study guide may still describe those earlier rules. Recommended training and actual eligibility are different questions, and candidates should confirm the current requirements for their specific examination.

Self-study can be cost-efficient, but it is not automatically cheaper if a candidate buys the wrong software license, prepares against a retired exam, or sits a test without practicing its core workflows. A sound plan uses the current issuer exam guide to decide what must be understood, uses legally available product access to practice it, and saves paid instruction for a demonstrable gap that cannot be closed through documentation, a lab, or supported learning material.

Select the current VMware exam before buying materials

Start with the job you perform. An administrator responsible for deploying and troubleshooting VMware Cloud Foundation needs different knowledge from an architect translating availability, capacity and security requirements into a conceptual, logical and physical design. Broadcom’s current VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 guides illustrate the distinction: VMware 2V0-17.25 assesses Cloud Foundation administration and related platform components, while VMware 2V0-13.25 is an architecture-focused exam. Their numbers are not interchangeable and neither should be substituted for an older vSphere-only credential without an official transition check.

Read the published exam-guide date, listed candidate profile, version of the platform, objective sections, time allowance and delivery rules. The currently published Administrator guide lists 60 questions and a 135-minute appointment; the Architect guide also lists a 60-item examination and a 135-minute appointment. These numbers are not a promise that every VMware exam uses the same format. Record the exact guide that matches the exam code you intend to book, and revisit it immediately before scheduling.

The wider VMware ecosystem also contains older VCP-DCV, NSX, vSAN, automation and end-user-computing terminology. Some historical credentials have retired, moved to another certification operator, or changed names and versions. Treat historical articles as explanations of the technology at that time, not proof of current booking or renewal eligibility. Preserve the names in existing career records while planning new study against a currently offered program.

Separate mandatory eligibility from recommended instruction

A useful historical dividing line is May 2024. VMware’s own program FAQ confirms that its updated VCP, VCAP and Specialist pathways no longer require mandatory training or a prior certification to earn the relevant credential. Course attendance remained recommended and may still be valuable, especially for a learner needing guided access to a full multi-host platform. The older claim that formal classes were *never* required is inaccurate, while the newer claim that every future VMware qualification has identical rules is too broad.

Check the certification path’s actual requirements before paying for a course, voucher or membership. A public training catalog is not the same thing as an exam eligibility ruling, and exam registration is not necessarily proof that every credential condition has been met. A candidate who is new to VMware Cloud Foundation may benefit from vendor-led instruction, but should purchase it because it solves a known learning problem, not because a historical blog implies it is always mandatory.

Start with a simple budget: official exam fee in the applicable region, one possible retake, software or lab access, appropriate hardware, and study materials. Treat travel, online proctoring requirements, and any employer reimbursement as separate variables. Prices and availability can change, so a budget should carry a research date rather than being represented as a permanent universal cost.

Build an exam-guide-to-lab map

Turn every substantive issuer objective into two items: what you need to explain and what you need to demonstrate. For an administrator, that may mean describing vCenter inventory and identity roles and then creating a role with limited permissions; comparing storage policy behavior and then testing datastore placement; or explaining NSX segments and then tracing why a specific VM cannot reach a destination. A learner who can name a feature but cannot observe it operating has not yet tested the understanding that operational scenarios demand.

Do not try to recreate an enterprise VMware Cloud Foundation deployment on a laptop by merely installing one hypervisor. Components such as vCenter, NSX, storage clusters and management appliances can require significant memory, networking and licensing. Nested virtualization may help candidates rehearse selected concepts, but not every topology or performance behavior will be realistic. A supported vendor lab or a legitimate training environment may be a better use of time for topics that exceed the hardware available at home.

For single-host experiments, pay attention to current ESXi licensing rather than using an outdated tutorial. Broadcom made a free ESXi 8.0 Update 3e option available for bounded lab use, but that edition does not provide vCenter management, vMotion, HA, DRS, VADP backups or official support. A comparison of free-versus-paid ESXi capabilities can clarify which operations are practical in that environment. If the exam objective calls for a licensed clustered feature, obtain authorized access to it rather than pretending a free stand-alone host demonstrates the same workflow.

Use official documentation as working material

Read vendor documentation to answer a specific engineering question, then verify the answer in an environment that actually supports the feature. For example, after learning the purpose of a vSphere distributed switch, configure a port group in an authorized lab and test its VLAN behavior. After reading about host lifecycle management, identify the prerequisites for patching a host and the dependencies that could interrupt a workload. Record not only the success path but the error messages and rollback decision when a prerequisite is absent.

VMware’s administration and troubleshooting references are useful because they describe capabilities for a particular software version. Do not combine a screenshot from vSphere 6.7, a vCenter 8 workflow and a VMware Cloud Foundation 9 exam objective as though they refer to an unchanged interface. Check product names, compatibility and release notes whenever the steps do not match the lab. Exam materials that discuss unsupported perpetual-license keys or obsolete training mandates should be marked as historical.

A study notebook is most valuable when it captures cause and effect. For each exercise write the intended state, the configuration attempted, what the console or logs showed, the actual result, and what change you would make next. This creates evidence of troubleshooting judgment; copying configuration commands without understanding why they work creates a fragile kind of memorization.

Plan self-study in measurable stages

In the first stage, assess current knowledge and identify platform access gaps. A candidate who already administers a cluster may have strong operations experience but little formal design vocabulary; an architect may explain capacity well but have limited experience with network fault isolation. Mark every objective as understood, lab-verified, or untested, with a brief concrete example. Use that inventory to allocate the next study sessions.

In the second stage, focus on the two or three objectives with the largest evidence gap. Build lab exercises around them, and take notes on constraints, alternative designs and failure modes. If the exam tests network isolation, practice both an allowed and a blocked flow and explain the rule that produced each outcome. If the exam tests resilience, differentiate an HA restart from a planned live migration rather than describing both as ‘zero downtime.’ Hands-on evidence is more valuable than a universal promise that a particular number of study weeks guarantees success.

In the final stage, use practice questions only as a diagnostic. Prefer legitimate exam-guide sample questions and realistic original practice that tests reasoning about product behavior. After every missed item, write the reason a plausible distractor fails and identify the vendor documentation or lab test that settles the doubt. Never rely on purported leaked live questions; they are a poor substitute for technical understanding and can misrepresent changed objectives.

Know when paid training is worth the cost

Instructor-led training can still be efficient when the employer needs several administrators brought to a shared operating baseline, the candidate lacks access to required platform components, or repeated lab failures reveal a foundational misunderstanding. It may also provide structured exercises, expert feedback and a lab environment that would cost more to reproduce independently. The useful comparison is not classroom versus free content in isolation: it is the total time, access and error risk required to reach genuine competence.

Self-study is usually a better fit when a candidate can already operate the technology, has permitted lab access, and can diagnose errors through documented evidence. A shorter focused course may be justified when only one area—such as NSX policy troubleshooting, VCF lifecycle operations or architecture documentation—is blocking progress. Avoid collecting unrelated training merely to fill a résumé; the certification preparation should close a specific gap in the work the candidate intends to perform.

Confirm readiness without manufacturing certainty

Before booking, reread the issuer’s current exam guide and check the exact code, available languages, registration route, ID requirements, format and any retake rules. Then assess readiness with three concrete tests: explain each important objective without prompts, demonstrate representative tasks in an authorized environment, and troubleshoot a failed scenario without relying on memorized answer choices. Areas still marked ‘untested’ should remain in the study plan rather than being counted as mastered.

VMware certification without expensive classroom training is possible under the current program, but its efficiency comes from an accurate exam selection, dated product evidence, legal hands-on practice and honest self-assessment. The goal is not to minimize every training purchase at any cost. It is to spend only where the investment improves the technical judgment that the credential is meant to represent.

A VMware certification plan does not have to begin with a costly classroom reservation.
