When CompTIA retired the CS0-002 exam and introduced CS0-003, it was not simply a routine version update. The shift represented a meaningful evolution in how the industry thinks about threat detection, incident response, and security operations. This is a historical comparison of two earlier CySA+ versions, not a claim that CS0-003 is the latest exam. Candidates planning a new examination should use CompTIA’s currently published objectives and verify booking by region and language.

Exam-version context (October 2026): CS0-002 is retired, the regional and language-specific booking status of CS0-003 must be checked directly with CompTIA, and CompTIA introduced CS0-004 in June 2026. This article compares two historical objectives sets; someone preparing for an upcoming CySA+ sitting must choose the currently bookable version and its corresponding official exam objectives.

An exam-version comparison is most useful when it separates changes in published objectives from changes in the industry. CS0-003 groups security-operations work, vulnerability management, incident response and reporting into four domains. Those categories provide a different study map, but the exam outline alone does not prove that particular attacks became more common or that earlier analysts did not use automation. Compare the two objective lists and then test the differences with evidence-handling exercises.

From CS0-002 to the newer CySA+ objectives

The CS0-002 exam was structured around five major domains: Threat and Vulnerability Management, Software and Systems Security, Security Operations and Monitoring, Incident Response, and Compliance and Assessment. Each of these areas reflected the security priorities of that era, with particular emphasis on vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection, and regulatory compliance frameworks.

CS0-003 reorganized these domains significantly. The updated exam focuses on four broader areas: Security Operations, Vulnerability Management, Incident Response and Management, and Reporting and Communication. This restructuring signals that CompTIA wanted to create tighter alignment between the exam content and what security analysts actually spend their time doing in modern environments. The reduction from five domains to four does not mean less content — it means the content is more focused and practical.

Software and systems security ceased to be a standalone domain heading in CS0-003. That is not evidence that secure configuration, application vulnerabilities or system-hardening decisions disappeared from the examination. Their relevance must be checked under the new security-operations and vulnerability-management subobjectives. A learner should map the actual numbered tasks rather than treating an absent heading as an instruction to stop studying the subject.

The earlier compliance-and-assessment heading was also reorganized. CS0-003 created a distinct Reporting and Communication domain, while other objectives still require analysts to communicate risk and support appropriate procedures. Domain names alone do not establish that fewer questions address a particular regulatory or governance concept. Candidates comparing versions should use published subobjectives and domain weights, not an assumed reduction in compliance coverage.

One of the most notable additions in CS0-003 is the increased weight given to reporting and communication. This entire domain is new in terms of how explicitly it is tested. Candidates are now expected to demonstrate that they can write clear incident reports, communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, and present vulnerability assessment results in ways that support business decisions.

Cloud investigation is a useful way to practice CySA+ analysis, but a broad claim that CS0-003 tests cloud security far more heavily than CS0-002 requires an objective-by-objective comparison. Use the published security-operations and vulnerability-management tasks to examine cloud authentication events, configuration evidence and affected resources. Identify what each log can and cannot establish, and treat cloud-provider examples as practice cases unless the issuer names them as tested requirements.

Vulnerability management and incident response

Both versions require vulnerability-management judgment, not simply pressing a scanner button. For either exam, an analyst should know how to validate a finding, distinguish a false positive from a reachable weakness, and explain remediation priority. CS0-003 makes vulnerability management one of its four named domains; a practical comparison should trace individual tasks in the earlier and later objectives rather than describe the older exam as a linear severity-score checklist.

CS0-003 treats Vulnerability Management as a named domain. Assessing a finding still means checking its validity, affected system, reachability and likely business consequence before deciding how to respond. CVSS can organize technical severity, but it cannot by itself establish an organization’s patch priority. These reasoning steps also mattered in CS0-002; the different domain organization should not be sold as proof that earlier preparation was a score-only scanning exercise.

Incident response remains important across both CySA+ editions. CS0-003 groups the relevant objectives under Incident Response and Management. Practice constructing an event timeline, selecting a containment step that preserves necessary evidence, identifying a recovery owner and documenting follow-up verification. The presence of a separate domain does not by itself establish that every incident-response subtopic is tested more deeply than in CS0-002.

CS0-003 also introduces more content around digital forensics as it relates to incident response. While the exam does not go as deep as a dedicated forensics certification, candidates need to demonstrate knowledge of evidence preservation, chain of custody, and forensic analysis techniques that support investigation outcomes. This addition reflects how tightly incident response and forensics work are connected in real security operations environments.

Threat intelligence and practical automation

CS0-003 includes threat-intelligence and threat-hunting concepts under its Security Operations objectives. In a practical exercise, compare the source, confidence, relevance and timeliness of an indicator with local endpoint or network evidence before deciding whether to escalate. A claim that threat intelligence received a substantially larger scored share than in CS0-002 requires published weighting or a defensible objective crosswalk rather than an inference from modern SOC practices.

MITRE ATT&CK can provide a useful language for investigating suspicious activity, but it should not be treated as proof that CS0-003 assigns more scored questions to a named framework than CS0-002. A useful analyst exercise maps one observed behavior to a plausible technique, identifies the log evidence that supports or contradicts it, and proposes a detection or containment decision. The precise testable framework terminology must come from the appropriate issuer objective list.

The CS0-003 objectives explicitly include scripting or data-format literacy within tools used to investigate suspicious activity. Analysts should be able to interpret basic PowerShell, Python, shell, JSON or regular-expression examples where the applicable objectives list them, without assuming the examination requires building production automation from scratch. A candidate comparing editions should verify the specified tasks rather than treat all scripting knowledge as newly introduced.

This change acknowledges that modern security operations centers depend heavily on automation to handle alert volume, reduce response times, and free analysts for higher-level work. Candidates do not need to be expert developers, but they are expected to read and interpret basic scripts, recognize what automation workflows accomplish, and identify how automation fits into broader security operations processes.

SOC operations and network monitoring

A security operations center uses several evidence streams: alert queues, identity events, endpoint telemetry and network observations. CS0-003 places these investigations in its named Security Operations domain, making a useful practice task the reconstruction of why one alert was escalated while a similar-looking alert was closed. That practice has value without claiming the earlier CS0-002 syllabus lacked operational judgment.

Alert triage should begin with the asserted behavior, its source and the possible business impact. Compare a legitimate administrator action with a suspicious privileged session, note missing evidence and record an escalation reason that another analyst could review. These skills are useful for CySA+ study and real defensive work; without comparative item-level data it is unsound to claim they are tested more directly in CS0-003 than in CS0-002.

CS0-003 explicitly names log analysis and correlation, SIEM, SOAR, endpoint tools and related network evidence in its Security Operations objectives. To practice, correlate two independent timestamps or identities before asserting that an anomaly is malicious. Both recognizable signatures and behavioral observations can be informative; the published outline does not justify a blanket claim that one exam version replaced signature analysis with behavioral detection.

CS0-003 also tests candidates on correlating log data across multiple sources to identify patterns that indicate malicious activity. This reflects how modern SIEM platforms operate and how analysts need to think when working through complex incidents. The ability to connect disparate data points and draw accurate conclusions is now a more explicit part of what the exam measures.

Network traffic analysis appears in both editions and remains part of an analyst’s evidence toolkit. CS0-003 explicitly includes packet-capture tools, and practitioners also need to interpret connection records and indicators of compromise in context. Study one suspicious flow through a packet trace, an endpoint log and an identity event instead of assuming that the later blueprint de-emphasized packet-level skills.

Packet-capture analysis was not removed from CS0-003. Its published Security Operations objectives explicitly name packet-capture tools, including Wireshark and tcpdump, alongside log correlation, SIEM and endpoint investigation tools. Candidates should practice both packet-level evidence and higher-level telemetry: a packet trace can establish a protocol exchange, while identity or endpoint logs may be needed to link that exchange to a user, device or incident. Neither evidence source alone is always conclusive.

Endpoint security and technical reporting

CS0-003 explicitly names endpoint detection and response under its operational tools. A useful lab starts with an endpoint process alert, checks parent-child process context and compares network or authentication records before concluding that an incident occurred. This is evidence that EDR is relevant to the CS0-003 objectives, not proof that an examiner gives it a larger weight than in CS0-002.

CS0-003 also tests knowledge of endpoint-based attack techniques and how analysts can identify them through behavioral indicators rather than just file-based signatures. This reflects the shift in the threat landscape where fileless malware, living-off-the-land techniques, and memory-based attacks have made traditional antivirus-style detection less reliable as a sole defense mechanism.

The addition of a dedicated reporting and communication domain in CS0-003 is one of the clearest signals that CompTIA wanted the updated exam to reflect the full scope of an analyst’s responsibilities. Writing accurate, clear, and actionable reports is a skill that many technical professionals undervalue, but it is essential for ensuring that security findings translate into organizational action.

CS0-003 tests candidates on the components of effective incident reports, how to present vulnerability assessment findings to stakeholders, and how to tailor communication for different audiences. A report written for a CISO has different requirements than one written for a technical remediation team, and the exam now acknowledges that analysts need to think about their audience when documenting security work.

Career fit and version-specific preparation

CS0-003 objectives can help learners practice the work of a security operations or vulnerability analyst, including evidence collection, prioritization and communication. That alignment is a learning benefit rather than proof of hiring preference or workplace readiness. Someone claiming proficiency should be able to explain a complete investigation, its uncertainty and its authorized response, not just present an exam pass.

CompTIA also updated the recommended experience level for CS0-003, continuing to suggest that candidates have at least three to four years of hands-on security experience before attempting the exam. This positions the CySA+ as an intermediate-level credential that bridges the gap between entry-level certifications like Security+ and more advanced credentials like CASP+. The updated exam content reinforces this positioning by requiring candidates to demonstrate analytical judgment, not just knowledge recall.

Many core skills transfer between the two editions: interpreting technical evidence, assessing vulnerabilities, handling incidents and communicating findings. The practical change for a learner is to remap those skills to the revised CS0-003 domain structure and practice scenario-based decisions. It would be misleading to portray CS0-002 preparation primarily as rote compliance memorization or to assume every CS0-003 topic was new. New candidates should check which edition they can actually book and use its matching objectives, including CS0-004 where applicable.

Practice questions and lab environments that simulate actual analyst work are more valuable for CS0-003 preparation than traditional flashcard-style studying. Candidates should spend time working through realistic incident scenarios, analyzing sample log data, and practicing the kind of risk-based reasoning that the updated exam tests. The performance-based questions on CS0-003 are designed to assess applied skills, and the best way to prepare for them is through applied practice.

CS0-003 as a historical CySA+ transition

The CS0-003 exam followed CS0-002 and kept a familiar format: up to 85 questions, a 165-minute test window and a 750 passing score on a 100–900 scale. Its objectives brought renewed attention to practical security operations, vulnerability management, incident response and reporting. Those facts help explain the historical change, but CS0-003 is no longer the newest generation of CySA+ and should not automatically determine a new candidate’s study materials.

Comparing CS0-002 with CS0-003 is still valuable when examining how analysts’ responsibilities developed. Cloud telemetry, endpoint investigation, threat intelligence, scripting and evidence-based communication were increasingly woven into monitoring and response work. An organization updating an analyst development plan can use the comparison to identify outdated procedures, but should align any new assessment or purchase with the issuer’s currently available blueprint.

CS0-004 became the newer CySA+ version in June 2026

CompTIA announced CySA+ version 4, exam CS0-004, on June 23, 2026. Candidates should therefore treat the older CS0-002-to-CS0-003 comparison as a history lesson, then check the active CS0-004 objectives and CompTIA’s current exam availability before scheduling. It would be misleading to describe CS0-003 as the latest option without acknowledging the V4 release.

An analyst preparing for the newest CySA+ should work from the official V4 domain objectives rather than assuming the CS0-003 weightings and terminology still apply. Use a hands-on security operations lab to gather endpoint logs, investigate a suspicious authentication pattern, triage an exposed service, document impact and recommend containment. These exercises build the judgment measured across multiple exam generations, while version-specific practice questions check whether the newer assessment adds or changes particular requirements.

The career value of CySA+ arises from the ability to produce defensible technical conclusions. In a security operations role that means separating genuine incidents from noise, determining likely impact, collecting useful evidence, communicating findings and improving detection rules. Exam version transitions should motivate a review of these workflows, not an unsupported promise that any specific code automatically produces a promotion or salary increase.

The CompTIA CySA+ certification has long been recognized as one of the most practical and career-relevant credentials in the cybersecurity field.
